Default Pond Hockey Weekend 1-31-2014

Sounds like great weather for it this weekend. The ice looks great and they are using new mini- boards now. http://www.pondhockeyclassic.com/newengland
I hope to see some forum friends on the ice, we will be there (and at Lago) most of the weekend!

About time they used some sort of boards system. Nice.

Can't use a Zamboni on a square rink

Should be a faster game. We will see who is in shape! I will be there cheering on the LOCALS (that is their name... the guys from Mboro, CH, etc) and drinking beer on the ice!

I wonder if they're using them only because there isn't much snow in between the rinks this year?

Default Crowds for hockey weekend?

How busy is downtown Meredith for Pond Hockey Weekend? Is it tough to get into the restaurants for dinner? And is parking hard to come by if we want to go down and watch the hockey?

You should be able to find parking. Restaurants will be busy, but a lot of them have bob houses on the ice to serve food there (there will also be some other vendors- think fair food!)

make the trip down it's a great time and fun to watch. good parking behind the bank or where the hardware store was. Bring crampons for your boots can be slippery.

Default # of rinks

How many rinks are there? Is there an aerial picture of the Meredith Bay view with all the rinks?

Default pond hockey

seen the mention that the pond hockey raised some revenue for Meredith , could of received allot more monies if all the illegal parking that was going on in Meredith during this weekend was ticketed.

never mind police in the Hannaford parking lot or directing traffic , send one of them to ticket the illegal parking in town and the town of Meredith would of seen allot of monies coming in from the fines !!!

Yep, nothing like flooding the area with tickets to cut off the hand that feeds you. Way to go.... Seems stupid to me, unless people are parking in such a way to create an emergency vehicle access problem. Otherwise, let people live and have a good time. Clean sports, good friends, healthy exercise and a huge financial boom to the economics of the area...Meredith and the surrounding towns. If it bothers you that much, in my opinion, find something else to do. It is only 3 days.

Default Maybe the best event of the year

I think that this is becoming the best event of the year. It brings in a lot of people, fills the Inns, fills the restaurants and brings a lot of first timers to Winnipesaukee. At least one restaurant owner in town told me it was one of his best weekends of the year. I was down Saturday. Seems really well run and the new boards made for very neat rinks. Parking was difficult around town but it seemed to me that people were making the best of the situation.

Default Open division

We watched the open division final on Sunday. Didn't know anyone from either side but it was good action. The ice was slushy and slow but that's pond hockey. The game was tied 1-1 and a player from St Paddys scored and 2 seconds after the puck went into the net, the final horn blew to end the game. Great ending. This event was a lot of fun to attend. So much going on all over the ice. If you haven't attended yet, mark it on your calendar next year

No question that it has become one of the best winter events for fans and businesses!

Default Pond hockey weekend

C'mon, hoopdawg, ease up, it's the middle of the winter and several thousand people want to have a great time playing hockey, and spending some money locally.

I say, rather cautiously, maybe, based on your 'penname', you are more of a basketball fan than a hockey fan.

I don't agree with the tickets, but I do think it's time for The Classic to give something back. After all it is a business after 4 years it has grown to a big event and it is clear it is making money or they wouldn't do it every year. I know it's great that it helps the local economy by bringing people up for the weekend. But they use the lake (a big part of it) which is a no charge resource and make money and if you do the math at about $500 a team times 200+ teams that's not a bad take. I am not jealous of them making money, I think it's a great idea and love to watch it. I am just thinking it would be nice to see maybe a scholarship or two or something where they helped out the local community, like the rotary does with the fishing derby . I heard from someone they did something but I can't find anything. Being the parent of some high school students we hit up the local business's a lot for money and donations and they are always GREAT about it, so I am glad this weekend is good for them. But if I am wrong hear please let me know. I have asked a few local people and they seem to feel the same way. And p.s it was Paddy's that won the open.......it's a bar in Mass. I don't think there are any Saints their....lol Great hockey game.

Default Glad there were boards this year…..

I was told by someone who played in the tournament the past few years that the boards were helpful to prevent the pucks from ending up in the bottom of the lake. He said in years past, loads of pucks each weekend would end up in the bottom of the lake.
