Default Computer Help

Is there someone in the Meredith area who can come to my house and help me figure out how to get my printer to work with my laptop? I have a computer guy in Florida that makes home visits but Meredith is to far for him to travel. Thanks for any names you can provide. Steve

Default What's wrong?

Sounds like you just need to remove the old driver and related software and download the latest from the manufacturer. Usually work 90% of the time. The other 10% is hardware problems. A 'reliable' computer repair shop will do just that for a good sum of money.

This is probably the case. Good advice.

Back to basics.
What is the operating system (Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8 etc.)?
Do you have a current anti-virus and is it paid for yearly and up to date?
Or one of the free ones?
Is the printer an old one?

The printer may be too old for the computer.
But if all is current then do what BroadHopper suggests.
Uninstall the printer software, restart the computer, then plug in the printer and turn on the printer. Microsoft usually "finds" the correct drivers automatically. The drivers are what make the printer operate. If that doesn't work, put the printer software into the disk drive of computer. Some printer manufacturers do not make/provide the drivers for older printers if the computer itself is newer. And it will never work.
If this is an Apple. Well, it should work the same way.

This is exactly what any "computer" store is going to do. For around $125.00.

Default One other thing to check.

If you try to print, and for whatever reason, a printing error develops, any subsequent attempts to print will be held in the print queue.

Look down in the "tray", the area where the time is shown at the bottom of the screen, and look for a printer icon (looks like a printer). You may have to click on a little arrow on the left side of that area to see other icons.

If the printer icon is there, then click on it. This will bring up a box on the screen. It will show any printing jobs in the queue, and the first one may be in error, or just showing printing. Go to "file" at the upper left corner of this box, click, scroll down, and delete all print jobs. Then close the box.

Try to print something simple, like a short email and see if it prints. If so, problem may be solved. If it doesn't print in a reasonable time, then check the print queue again. If it is there, then you may want to uninstall / reinstall the drivers for the printer.

My sister in law, who I love dearly, will call regularly to say her printer is not working (again), and when we swing by, she has items in the queue, the first of which is in error. She has had 8 or 9 on at least one occasion.

If the icon is not there, listen to the others.

Default Is your printer identified by your computer?

Go into "settings"..."devices"...then make sure your printer is the chosen one.

Default Printer problem

If the printer used to work and you haven't already tried, it may be as simple as a rebooting the printer and computer. - - turn them all the way off, unlplug the electricity from the printer - wait 30 seconds - restart the printer then the computer
My HP printer occasionally doesn't work - rebooting works
Good luck

This original post was in May.
It would be nice if original poster provided information as to how this issue was finally solved.
