I did see a boat in the water today; between Ellacoya and Welch. Also saw two kayaks off of Ellacolya. Still a lot of ice just out of the photo to the left; NW.

Default Fishermen

Most likely fishermen as fishing opened yesterday.

A lot of icebergs going through that area also.

Report from Y Landing is that they have ice in their cove but that NHEC crew and tree cutters have managed to get to Bear. NHEC restored power a few days ago

Ice behind dock melting nicely today. Lots of open water on North side of Welch. Water temp must be rising or maybe the onshore wind pushing warmer surface water into Welch. Yesterday's snow melting quickly too. We need some 40-50 degree days.

Default Warm Sun

I am reading 72 on my thermometer in the sun at 5:00. That should speed up the melt.

Default Nice to see the fishing boat

It was nice to see the fishing boat out near Welch. Where could one launch a boat currently to get out to that large piece of fishable open water??? I am coming up next weekend with a group of guys to try and fish, how do we get in that open water???

Possibly, as long as recent snowstorm did not block access, Ellacoya State Park...small boats only, very shallow launch. Could get iced in quickly from moving ice from the West so be aware and careful!!....

Yes it looked like the 2 fishermen launched the small boat at Ellacoya. There were a few pickups parked down at the end of the lane.

Drove down Route 11 the length of Alton Bay yesterday and it is still frozen up pretty solid, although in many spots the ice was turning a nice shade of gray... The only open water was around the docks...

Hoping melting progresses nicely this week! -PIG

Well maybe not, drove in today and there were no tracks in the snow indicating a boat launch since the April fools day snow. There is a small circle at the end where a 4WD vehicle could turn with a short trailer and back to the water. Then pulling away from the water maybe parking for four vehicles with short trailers or park out on the road.

I used to "cartop" years ago in my younger days...one could manage a small aluminum or Jon boat and a couple of fly rods and troll by rowing...maybe that's what happened here??
Thanks for the pic!

Looking at the ice tonight between Welch, Belknap Point, Lockes Island, Round Island and Timber island, it is ready to go! One day of rain and a little wind and it will be gone!

Keeping fingers crossed!

North of Mink Island the ice is starting to get very gray. Weather this week should accelerate things. Sounds like a lot of progress is happening south of Mink too.

Default Crystal Lake and Lily Pong

I recall anecdotal history that Winni is ice-out 10 days after Crystal Lake in Gilmanton and about the same for Lily Pond in Gilford.
How are these two indicators doing this year?

Default Lily Pond

Just went by Lily pond and there is very very small spot of open water in the center can't be more than 5' in diameter but...In my finest Scottish accent.... "She's breaking up Captain!"

The cams from pine island and bear seem to show no ice in the area but the bear cam pointing a sheps makes the entire area look iced in. Is that last cam updating or does anyone know if you can launch out of sheps and get to the open water between the islands?

For extra credit does anyone have updates on how Alton bay is looking or west Alton marina areas?

Hi Mike - all cams are in working order but it has been a very odd ice-out around Bear/Pine. It is still ice between Shep's and Bear, but definitely softening and with the pouring rain tonight it should be going quickly... The channel between Y-Landing and Pine is mostly open, and you could possibly scoot around the south side of Pine to open water on the north side of Bear...

As of last Sunday Alton Bay was still completely iced-over with melting around the shoreline/docks.

I have been doing my "melt dance", it's not pretty but it's working! -PIG

thank you both for the response. Looks like another weekend before trying to float the boat....unless something crazy happens today around Sheps. I did notice that the Broads side of rattesnake opened up completely over night even though the west side is still locked up.

Default West Alton Sleepers View

This is the link to the Echo Shores cam in West Alton showing a nice view from the mainland from left to right of Sleepers, Rattlesnake, Cub, and Treasure Islands.

http://www.echoshorescam.com/

It sure looks a lot different than last year at this time when I was already out at the island.

I have it on first hand intel from this morning not yet between Sheps and Bear.. still to much in the way but the ice is looking real punky and likely will change dramatically over the next few days.

I wish Marine Patrol would put up a camera looking out of Glendale. It would be helpful for the many islanders that use the public facility, as well as give people a look at weather conditions, available dock space, etc.

That would be nice except it would cost the tax payers 50x's what it should and it'd never work right.

That is a good idea. In the spring (whenever that is) the Gilford Islands Association is supposed to get a tour of the new digs. If that actually happens and I am there, I will make that suggestion.

Default Boating this morning

First off for codeman: Glendale is locked up pretty solid, I think it's going to be another 10 days in there.

We launched our fishing boat from Ellacoya this morning and fished the broads and up and around the east side of Welch. Mostly all open water in this area. Lots of ice blowing and moving so you do need to be careful of getting locked in. No fish boated but it was great to get out on the big lake! We are going to hit it again Saturday and Sunday weather permitting.

Wow, what a difference a day makes! The broads are wide open this morning! From Lockes island to as far as I can see to the south which should be past rattlesnake. There is still some ice on the North side of Welch and North from there.

I'll post some pics later on of certain areas around the lake between Gilford and Meredith as I have some errands to run in that direction.

Won't be long now!

Default Ice

Still plenty of ice from Diamond Is. and thru the area between Rattlesnake and Smith Point and out past Sleepers. This wind today will help but until the ice starts moving its here for several more days

Default Ice

I'll correct myself - this wind has already pushed the ice line between Diamond and Rattlesnake

Weirs is still fully iced in. Channel is open

Meredith bay, fully iced in

Sanders Bay, iced in.

Smith cove, iced in.

Glendale, iced in but ice line is at the point and shouldn't be long before it's gone. See attached pic.

Broads are fully open from Lockes island to Rattlesnake.

Default Ice out

Is everyone thinking that with 60 degrees tomorrow, 75 on Monday, 78 Tuesday, and 62 Wednesday that we will have ice out by Wednesday or Thursday?

This is the view of Alton Bay yesterday afternoon from the 'scenic overlook' on Route 11 looking out the mouth of the bay, the other downtown to the Bandstand.

Today, Monday, and Tuesday should free things up if we can get a little wind to help the warm temps and sunshine! -PIG

Default A Hope for Warm and Calm Weather

Folks whose places are on wide open locations hope that the pack ice melts away on calm days thus avoiding damage to their in-the-water docks. Last year, we suffered severe damage from wind blown ice to our exposed dock on East Bear Island. 😱

Default Fishing Boats

There are a few boats fishing in the broads this morning! All must have launched at Ellacoya. Wish I was one of them!

There must have been a lot of ice breaking up yesterday because a huge raft of broken brash ice floated past our place heading out into the broads. Most of it has cleared by this morning but our shoreline and breakwater is surrounded by chunks, slush, etc. I suspect this was some of the remaining ice on the West side of Welch. Sunny and warm today. Should see more progress.

Welcome to the Forum.
Ice-out is complicated. Not just a matter of warm days. In this case, you may be right. My guess, made months ago, is for the 16th.
I still haven't heard about Lily Pond and Crystal Lake which I think of as 10 day Canarys.

At 8 am today Lily pond was still 80 to 90% ice albeit very dark in color. There should be a lot less at the end of the day.

I don't know about official ice out by the 13th. While large stretches of the Borads are wide open. Alton Bay is still covered in ice the before the gazebo and that sheet ice has to clear for The Mount to reach AB. Wolfboro also looks locked up as well as the view from Weirs...locking in merideth. I'm sure at least one of those bays will still be locked in...possibly even Center Harbor

I agree, the 13th is pretty optimistic. Lily Pond is historically a solid indicator, and someone already updated on that situation.

Default Turnover

Water @ 11 ft @ Trexlers/Quayside hit 40 today. Thats gonna start rising through the water column and do serious damage to the ice.

Default Meredith Bay

I bet Meredith bay will be clear of ice by the end of this week! It has that dark, granulated appearance today and it'll be in the upper 70s again tomorrow!!

Nope sure don't, but you do need to be careful doing this!!!!

Being the only idiot on Bear Island on a beautiful 85 degree day, PRICELESS!

Ice report, what I went through had no structure to it, just ice tubes and maybe 2-3 inches in length. Ice line as I was leaving was as follows, to the north between 3 mile and the beavers then to black cat. All clear to right about six mile blocking access to the LI bridge then from what I could see opens back up 3/4 the way down LI and over towards Welch. Between Pine and shore was clear to where it opens up between bear and shore. What ice is there (what I pushed through) just needs wind to clear it out. Ice has receded about 1/4 the way out from Bear and there are large breaks here and there of open water. About half way between sheps and cattle it opens up again all the way down past cattle and into the open area beyond the narrows there.

It won't be long however some areas do look like there is still even after all this warmth still bright white ice.

Meredith bay looks ready to go at least the first 1/3 of it very dark almost black, the ice does turn to a lighter grey looking down towards weirs.

Water temp on the fish finder was 38 degrees.

A little tidbit...the condition of the ice you describe is called "Candle Ice" as it looks like thousands of little candles vertically stacked together. In a slight breeze they rub together making a tinkling sound. It's cool to actually hear it happen.

Based on the pictures and great report....it seems "marginally safe" to launch from Sheps as of yesterday (is that accurate)? I am hoping to launch my 1875 Lund on Friday morning. Please provide any updates if anyone else is in the area today or tomorrow.

Of course if ice blows in from the south....it could lock everything up quickly with drifting ice. I'm hoping winds from the north will blow ice out toward Cattle Landing.

Yes that's accurate....hard to predict exactly what you'll find I was lucky yesterday in that there wasn't much in the way of wind so coming back after being out on the island all day conditions didn't really change from an ice flow perspective a whole lot so the return trip was easy enough but I will admit I was prepared to be marooned for a few days if need be.

If I were you I'd say go for it even if there is some ice out there it's disappearing fast. If you find the need to push through any ice pick your path carefully and creep through it. I had no problem going as fast as my outboard idles in gear occasionally using my paddle to push a solid piece out of the way. I do agree wind from the SE could be a far bigger problem than from the NW.

Good luck and I hope you get out there.

Default Minge Cove

Minge is still somewhat iced in. A lot has melted today all around the lake. We plan on putting the boat in the water Saturday if that ice you see melts. I do not want the wind to pick up and have icebergs crash into my boat. There is a lot of ice at the southern end of the lake. Once that breaks up, if there is a wind from the SE give or take a few degrees, that will come rushing past Rattlesnake and smash into anything in its way. We are hoping for an overnight, but not if there is the chance of damage to the boat. Andrew's Marine Service website has a new image every day. This is from April 12. That is a thick chunk of ice there!

Ice out caller, Emerson Aviation, just had an interview a minute ago with Mike Haddad of WMUR and he predicted "official" ice out would be on Wednesday or Thursday of next week...

Surprised you didn't catch me out there picking my way through all that in the boat. Probably would have had to add the caption, look at that knucklehead!

Looks a lot more ominous from the air.

Awesome shot!

Default More frequent aerials

Flyguy's aerials are important to seeing what parts of the lake are still iced in as well as the color of the ice. Please go to his site to donate money so he can go up more often. Airplane fuel is not cheap. flyguy, what does the fuel cost for each flight? This would help our generous viewers understand how much to donate.

I am always amazed how much the lake changes in a day and would love more frequent images.

Default Rattlesnake

All open water from Smith Point to south side of Rattlesnake except in the 2 corners on either side of the "thumb". Cannot see the landing but it was almost out Tuesday so with the wind today should be clear by weekend

Default Reporting from Shep's

Of course if ice blows in from the south....it could lock everything up quickly with drifting ice. I'm hoping winds from the north will blow ice out toward Cattle Landing.
Wide open at Shep's today thanks to a strong wind blowing down the channel from the north. Could see ice further south, guessing about the end of Bear.

Nice to be out on the island! PIG

As MAXUM pointed out a south wind could change things, and sure enough the ice has blown back in. However just saw a fishing boat plow through it easily, so assume it is "candle ice".

We finally got out to Welch late yesterday when the ice in the end of Smith Cove finally gave way. Great to be here, very nice calm morning today prior to the wind kicking up a bit. Riding around Welch no sign of ice except in the small cove by Winter Harbor Yacht club. I was surprised that we saw no floating debris however we keep a lookout at modest speed.
