Default Ice Conditions

I'm planning to bring a group of Scouts out to Mink via Cattle Landing next Saturday but haven't been out for a couple weeks and am wondering what the conditions are like around the Cattle Landing docks and through the gap between Bear Island and Meredith Neck. Some years I've encountered a lot of open water in that area. How's is holding up with the recent (and ongoing) warm weather?

Predicting the ice conditions for next week is a gamble.....it seems to be transitioning to a grey colored softer ice....plenty open water at the Cattle Landing dock area probably due to the circulator and the big bad ice boat...today saw a few snowmobiles traveling across the ice between Bear & Mark Islands.....tough one to predict..?.

Saw about ten different cars & pickups parked out on the ice, close to different bobhouses, on Meredith & Center Harbor Bays.

Today's Feb 21 www.citizen.com has a report on two 52-year old guys breaking their Chevrolet 1500 pickup thru the ice about 250' off-shore, near the Gov Isl bridge, while returning from Welch Island, with minor injuries & cold.

After the truck broke through the ice, they stood on the roof until rescued. Must have been a heavy Chevy!

Your best bet is to get an update next Friday. I know it is short notice if you have to cancel, but better to be safe.

Default Thanks guys

Probably going to cancel the trip. The lack of snow cover and and the warm conditions' impact on the ice pack argue for not taking chances. I've a lot of experience through the seasons with the Cattle Landing area and while it's probably safe enough for me and my family, I'm less eager to take chances with someone else's kids. Thanks for the thoughts.

VERY wise decision. The ice keeps on retreating from the shoreline with every passing hour. It would make me very nervous bringing my own kids out to the island right now.

This is looking out from Meredith Neck from a friends house. He has neighbors on either side with bubblers. A few weeks ago we were walking around out here and sledding on to the ice. Not now

Today is colder than yesterday, and there's some snow predicted this week sometime. Never know, maybe winter will roar back into town with a foot of snow on Wednesday nite and some cooler temps....it's a possibility?

...this calls for a snow-dance...keep the faith....all hail Queen Serena...Goddess of the Snows.....

Smile I Hear Y'all...

Believe me or not, after Weiring out several roof shovels here in the Lakes Region, I guess that I should have broken all ties with the Snow Gods before moving to Dallas/Fort Worth... Been snowed in here since days, so I talked with Google..., and they are working on an App that will put the snow (where We Want IT)... Coming to you're neighborhood soon.

OK, so how thick is the ice out there. I remember at this time 2-3 years ago it was nearly 3 feet. Last year at this time it got to about 18 inches. I'm wondering if it even got to 12 inches this year. It certainly isn't going to get thicker now

We were fishing in the Whortleberry Island area late last week and there was about 18" of ice in most places. We did notice that there was open water starting to show along the shore in spots, especially on south facing shores where there were rocks absorbing the sunlight. Areas near bubblers had also opened up considerably since the Rotary Derby weekend. The Hole in the Wall had open water all the way through. Without a major cold snap, I'd say those with earlier dates in the ice out guessing contest will be the winners.

Default There are easier ways to wash your car!

A local Boston radio station used to run a contest called "big bucks for stuck trucks" where you guessed when the first college student in a uhaul would run into the Fiedler foot bridge on Storrow Drive.

We need a "big bucks for sunk trucks" contest.

Default Trek from Minge cove to Sleepers

Hi All

I left on foot from Minge cove yesterday . The hole from the truck and
the area from the bubblers are getting very close. I personaly wouldn't
drive a snowmobile or quad thru that area. Be careful going between
Sleepers and Treasure, there is a finger of water coming out from
treasure about 1/3 of the way between the 2 islands.

P.S.
Didn't catch a thing

Default Alton Bay Airport

Hi All, Just letting everyone know that the Alton Bay Airport is now closed for the year. The ice is getting to thin around the edges of the bay. Pilots please pass the word. I have posted the closing on the NOTAMS, web site. thank you, Paul.

Default Thank You

Thank you Paul and crew, you have done a fantastic job with the runway and I enjoyed having all the landings and take-offs that I have seen. I enjoyed talking with Pilots and their friends and families as well. I enjoyed seeing local businesses bustling and getting that extra shot in the arm in what is typically a slow time for them. I enjoyed seeing the faces of families watching the runway operations on the weekend. All this was possible because you and your friends took it upon yourselves to make it happen.
Thanks again.
