They got the Lawn Chair Drill Team wrong too. There are six women in the group, not counting the banner carriers and drummer who are also women. I'm one of the Lawn Chair Ladies!!!!!

About four months from now, probably on the first Tuesday in January, is the NH presidencial primary election. I definitely expect to bump into Mitt, Rick, & Barack over the next couple months, down at the new Meredith-Family Dollar, all waiting in line at the check-out to pay for their $3.50 frozen pizzas!

"Well, just look who's here........helloooooo Mr Mitt!" .....very smart to be stopping in here....this new store is located smack dab in the middle of Meredith's year round, full time, local neighborhood people, and except for the last 2008 election, Meredith almost always favors the Republican candidate in November.

Default Navy 1

I know there is an Air force 1, and Marine 1, Motorcade 1, (army) but is there a Navy 1? What kind of boat does the president get? If I was president that would be my first question, where is my new boat!

I know how he feels. Coming back home to New Hampshire can be a great sense of comfort and decompression. I think that if we get Mitt as a president, this kind of tips his hand that New Hampshire might be a likely place to recharge the batteries and get some quality think time.

In deed you are correct RGuy..... I while I see it as a great thing for a president of have a place to get away too, I am not sure I want to see it in the lakes region. It might lead to restrictions that none of use are fond of....
It also tends to lead to a real estate boom, which may drive some of us off the lake.....

Not that this would keep me from voting for Romney If I feel he is the right the person for the job.....

I think he is trying to hard to "play the game" and not keeping it focused on his own message.

That is one of the many Reasons I still believe Romney to be a long shot. He starts his campaign earlier then any one else, because he has the money to do so. And while there is no real opposition, his message is always quite clear. He is a business man, he see the opportunity to take a business approach to government. (no different the Ross Perot, and Donald Trump). However as additional candidates start to come into the light, and the political game starts, Romney losses traction, as he has to take hard fast stances on issues, that in the beginning he skirts around. There is a reason this man seems to only play in politics.

I will consider Romney, but first he has to make it through the primary season.

Just a friendly reminder... these forums are for the lake. While it's appropriate to discuss Romney in light of his residence here, lets be careful this thread doesn't branch into a political/candidate discussion.

Kennebunk and the Kennebunkport still attact people today due to the Bush family living there- it might be a boom for local business and or a curse to quiet smalltown life.

No matter what happens to Mitt in the presidential race you can't fault the guy if he wants to take a vacation and decides to head to the lake just like everyone else on this forum does. If he does win and comes to the lake I don't begrudge him for doing so, it will without a doubt screw the area up while he's in town. Remember too that will extend beyond whatever time he may be in the White House (if he gets that far).

As a side note, get educated on the candidates running for President and vote. It's not only a privilege but an obligation as a citizen. Many have died or sacrificed a great deal so you have the ability to do so!

Default What if???

Three years ago Romney bought the La Jolla, California oceanfront home of a former San Diego Mayor and her "Jack In The Box" founder husband. The 3000+ sq. ft., $12,000,000 property will be bulldozed to make way for a 12,000 sq. ft. "West Coast White House" (Maybe) It is in close proximity to the San Diego Mormon Temple and according to Mitt....he wants to be where he can hear the waves! Close to SD Airport for AF One....and all those Camp Pendleton Marines just up the road... What does this mean for the Romney "camp" on Lake Winnipesaukee?

I don't think it would mean anything for the Romney camp on Winnipesaukee... except maybe reduced use.... Romney bought the camp because he liked the area, unless he no longer enjoys the lake, he will still want to use it....

Sounds like he'll need me to be his personal caretaker for his 'camp' in Wolfeboro.

Have you seen his Christmas card? I think his family can keep more than one house full with plenty to spare.

Can't tell if this picture was taken at the lake?

Great looking Family!

What's up with the matching "outfits" on all the kids? (Maybe they got one of those coveted 30% off coupons from Kohl's?)

The little bit of the house you can see looks to be the same color as his lake house and the trees and bushes look like typical NH stuff. Just guessing.

Here is a family picture from the 2008 Campaign that is from Winnipesaukee.

The guy on the right end of the picture looks like he is wearing the same shirt , wearing the same smile and holding the same baby that didn't grow at all over the course of a year and the baby has the same black outfit on. What's that all about?

Default Not so strange

We have 8 grandchildren ranging in age from 6 to 21, with some of the kids living with "ex's". After the youngest was born, we tried several times to get a picture of all 8 together. It took over 3 years before we got the "baby" in a picture with her other 7 cousins. In the past 3+ years, we have not had the opportunity to get the 8 together again for an updated picture.

I'm guessing that the two pictures (and I'm sure many more) were taken at the same family gathering, probably by a professional photographer, and there were multiple posings. If we had trouble getting 8 kids together, how easy is it to get a family that size together for a family photo op.

Just a thought.

PS: I just added up the people, and the original had 28 people, the second photo showed 22. Hmmmmmmmm. Now I don't know, and I've had two cups of coffee.

Do we really need to scrutinize the photo's this much?.....

At any rate on thing to think about is photo shop is a wonderful thing....

Upthesaukee if you are really interested in getting a family photo, look for a photographer that is will to work with you... You might not be able to get everyone together at once, but I know many people that have had large family photos done over the course of several sittings....and then all the photos merged.....

Why not a spruce tree with decorations. That should satisfy everyone including the US government.

A friend I knew called it a Hunnaka bush, I think he was pulling my leg. Is there such a one?

Mitt and his wife were in Ashland, NH, the exact geographic center of New Hampshire, yesterday evening, giving an energized stand-up routine to a room full of reporters, and locals. By the time I rolled through Ashland, I stopped after seeing the two big Romney buses, and all the police, and walked up to the American Legion Hall there to take a look-see. Unfortunately, the entry door was locked with what probably was security guard on the inside, a stocky guy in a medium grey suit & tie. Anyway, the Legion Hall has two large picture windows, so it was pretty interesting to watch it all from the outside without any audio, just the body languauge and the presentation. It looked like a very high-powered event, what with all the news people, two campaign buses, satelite trucks, police and you know what ...... I bet you ten thousand dollars there will be a 30-second clip of it on today's tv news, or something! ... .

If Mitt wins the only thing that I can imagine is, that the marine patrol will double, with state police on board, coast guard cutters allover the place, navy seals tooling around, secret service marine division stopping every vessel within a ¼ of a mile of mitts place. Just going to Wolfeboro for a ice cream cone would be a nightmare wondering if your going to get torpedoed out of the water!
In my opinion Mr. Romney is the best person to for the job at hand, but should I vote for a another candidate for my own selfish reasons to save the way of life I have been accustom to on the lake?

Kennebunkport seems to have survived and i suspect will help property values when they show images from the lake. Vote who you think will help the country the best and see where it goes

I heard from those involved that he has personal interrests in the Northern pass project and would like to see it go thru. Sad..

I have plenty of reasons NOT to vote for Mitt, and the Lake has absolutely nothing to do with them. 2A Lies to start with. Only one candidate has NH values of Liberty, Freedom and Frugality, and the record to show he means what he says.

Please don't get into a political debate here. This thread is to discuss the imaginable and the unimaginable (read that as funny and or serious) consequences of having a presidential retreat here on the lake.

One real change will be regarding airspace control, especially if he were around, possible even family members. A no fly zone is usually in place around the residence of a president, wherever that may be at the time. It could possibly affect access to Laconia airport when he was here. I remember when George Walker visited many years back, the airspace was shut down, and that was just for a visit.

I think it would be lovely to have a president have a summer White House on our wonderful lake. Certainly it will get us national attention.

This is the same guy who several years ago had off duty Mass state troopers patrolling the waters off of his property illegally keeping boaters away. The waters of NH are a public right of way; we do not need over bearing arrogant politicians keeping order with their own private out of state police force.
If he was to get elected and visits the lake I think you will find a lot of unhappy inconvenienced boaters and drivers on that side of the lake.

This is important to know, if it happened.

If he were elected what make anyone think of all of the places he might go (with little vacation time) is to the lake. Safe bet if it were to happen it would be a short stay!

I agree. Mitt is building a huge house in California. Once the NH primary is over it may be out of sight out of mind for Mitt, especially if he wins the presidency. My guess is that he won't be here very much.

His actions made the news in both states and had many in this area shaking our heads at his actions. It was several years ago and was a topic on the forum.

Well one thing I will be willing to bet if he becomes president: He will not go to the dump-er transfer station- in his old clothes anymore.

Nor will he be able to just pop in to the local hardware store or lumberyard.

Reply by Islander:
As I remember it, the Massachusetts State Police detail guarding the Govenor put out those lines without a permit. That is why a boat could legally enter the area.

Below is a copy of the swim line rules. Boats are not allowed in swim areas. They also require that only the shore front property owner can obtain a permit. This shows the property owner has rights to the lake that others do not have.

(b) No person shall put or place a swim line in the public waters of any public body of water without prior written approval of the director.

(c) An application for a swim line permit, DSSS 41, shall be submitted to the director by the shore front property owner, or a duly authorized agent.

The above is a discussion between PROPELLER and Islander in the Diver Flag thread of the boating section. It ocurred in 2005. It is the only reference I could find in the forum in a search of Romney and Police.

We won't have to be aggravated by not being able to dock in Wolfeboro while looking at the handicap dock empty. We won't be able to get by the armada blocking Wolfeboro bay.

From a private pilot's perspective, with Mitt as Prez, it won't be a good thing around the lake. Since 9/11, the Secret Service applies large area flight restrictions around the President where ever he goes.

So, I hope he's nowhere close by during the Winter Festival at Alton Bay, because there will be no Ice Runway flyin. And access in and out of Laconia Airport will likely be restricted.

Maybe the same architect that designed the Walmart Plaza in Gilford/Laconia also designed Mitt's house, and there is a corner of the property that is Alton .

Unhappy Mitt on the Lake

If he becomes president and he decides to vacation there, it won't be fun to drive, walk or even boat in the area. The reality is that the Secret Service will make it a huge frozen zone. They don't care if people have been there since the 1950's and disrupting peoples lives. I've been in an areas when both President Bush and Obama comes to town, it's not a fun commute. As far as boating, there will be a huge area that will be shut down to the public. There will be plenty state, local and secret service personal on boats protecting the waterfront.
But on a lighter note. If the Secret Service believes they can't ensure his safety and secure the surrounding perimeter, they won't let him stay there. Hopefully it's the latter scenario.

On a related note (I probably mentioned this before), if any of you divers like exploring Clark Point, this will DEFINITELY be out of the question during a Romney administration. But if you're down for an adventure, I'm sure a dive there would result in a very quick encounter with a Navy Seal diver.

One might think, that if it is unknown that he is there, there would be no attention to be drawn to the area, and therefore no big deal,

which is the way I would want to have it.

My in-laws live in Kennebunkport. For the most part, the impact was negligable when George Sr was president.

As others have suggested, while he was in office he spent minimal time there. When he was there, he tended to stay in his own compound.

If anything, the shop owners complained that it actually hurt business. People assumed it would be bad so they stayed away.

Immediately following the inauguration, the government shuts down all websites featuring aerial images of the lake and closes Laconia Airport to all non-military traffic. In an unlikely alliance, Skydive Laconia joins forces with Flyguy to pepper the FAA with prank calls (Is your De Havilland Canada DHC-2Beaver running? Better catch it!).

February 2013
After completely restoring the American economy in just two weeks, President Romney jets away for a well-deserved vacation. Four Secret Service agents, disguised as typical New Hampshire ice fishermen (RayBans, black overcoats, wing tips and Uzis) are rescued from the waters off of Clark Point when a sudden thaw weakens the ice. WinniDivers boasts its best winter season ever after recovering three Suburbans, two anti-aircraft missile emplacements, and Marine One from under the ice. Sensing a golden business opportunity, Bain Capital acquires a controlling interest in WinniDivers.

March 2013
Vice President Gingrich resigns after the Laconia Citizen exposes his dalliance with a waitress at the Wolfeboro Inn. The resulting publicity boosts sales beyond even George Soderberg’s wildest dreams. Sensing a golden business opportunity, Bain Capital acquires a controlling interest in the Inn.

April 1, 2013
President Romney announces his nominee to replace Gingrich – our own Bear Islander. BI promptly takes to the airwaves to propose a Constitutional Amendment that would permit camp directors nationwide to unilaterally impose no-wake zones of up to 2 miles in diameter around any waterfront camp. President Romney also announces his nomination for a vacancy on the Supreme Court – Ralph Nader. Fortunately, this all turns out to be an elaborate April Fools joke, except for the part about BI as VP and except for the part about the Constitutional Amendment. Sensing a golden business opportunity, Bain Capital acquires Camp Lawrence, Camp Nokomis, Camp Tecumseh and Camp.

May 2013
President Romney takes another well-deserved vacation on the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee. In a surprising move, SBONH endorses a lake-wide no-wake zone to facilitate security precautions for the NH White House. In an equally surprising move, the “lame-stream liberals” at WINNFABS oppose the restrictions and distribute T-shirts with their new slogan: Live Free, as long as it’s under 45. Easter Seals announces the suspension of its lake-related fund raising activities, sensing that a “Poker Paddle” just won’t have the same draw. Sensing a golden business opportunity, Bain Capital…oh, never mind. Even they can’t figure out how to make money off of this.

June 2013
Waterfront property values take an enormous hit from the lake-wide no-wake zone. Or maybe values skyrocket, I’m not sure which. In either event, WINNFABS releases a statement saying, “Nyah, Nyah, we told you so.” Sensing a golden business opportunity, disgraced former Texas Governor Perry establishes a real estate firm in Wolfeboro and reminds residents that the three most important considerations in real estate are “Location, location and, uh,… I forget the other one.”

July 4, 2013
Responding to a frantic report from Clark Point of “shots fired” the CIA launches a protective drone attack. Due to an unfortunate misunderstanding concerning map coordinates, the drones destroy the Mount Washington Observatory rather than the intended target, the “Wolfeboro Fireworks Barge Sponsored by Bain Capital.”

August 2013
Espousing the virtues of bringing private sector values (CEO style) to the government, President Romney takes yet another vacation at Clark Point, where he announces plans to attend ForumFest. The Secret Service agrees only after FLL and APS agree to stay home. An unfortunate incident occurs on the boat ride to Center Harbor when, mistaking it for an Iranian aircraft carrier, a Navy escort submarine torpedoes the “Bain Capital Presents the MV Mount Washington.”

September 2013
President Romney graciously allows Bill and Hillary Clinton to use his lake home as a retreat in an attempt to rekindle their romance. Unfortunately, a recently laid-off waitress from the Bain Capital Inn at Wolfeboro saunters by in a string bikini and, well, you don’t need me to predict the rest of this little nugget. In an unrelated development, BI abruptly resigns as VP to compete on “Survivor: Governors Island.”

October 2013
October seems like a quiet month at the lake until the annual water level reduction reveals an underwater prison cell inhabited by Ron Paul, who had disappeared from public view after the Florida primary. This revelation puts the lie to the stories circulated in the press that little green men from another universe had reclaimed Ron Paul and taken him home to be the chief economic advisor to the supreme leader of the planet Latipacniab.

November 2013
Nothing happened. Really. It’s November. In NH.

December 2013
The state coffers are empty. The Governor thought the influx of tourist dollars would never end, but the month of November brought it all to a screeching halt. When the state can’t make the monthly payment, creditors repossess the White Mountains which he mortgaged to buy the Parthenon from cash-strapped Greece and to install indoor plumbing for the Governor’s Mansion. In a last ditch effort to make the state payroll, the Governor attempts to pawn Quebec, which he won in a drunken poker game with Prime Minister Harper, but no one will take it. Fearing a loss on their New Hampshire investments, Bain Capital steps in and buys Quebec, renaming it “La Belle Province Offert Par Capital du Bain.” A grateful Governor Lynch changes the state motto to “Buy low, slash jobs, sell high.”

Default What hapens to the lake if Romney wins?

I hate to display all my naivete at once, but I just don't think Mr Romney is the type of person who would demand a lot of "pomp and circumstance" around him when elected President; although, it may be that powers beyond his immediate control (ie., Secret Service protection details) would enact some level of isolation simply because he is the President.

A lot of people in Wolfeboro are somewhat used to seeing him at the local stores and transfer station, or bicycling in his neighborhood, or walking near his home, and he just seems like the type of person who would want to continue this pattern of behavior.

Hopefully, people would leave him alone when he is in Town.

I heard FLL was one of those displaced during his corporate takeovers, he's been in seclusion ever since. Poor guy’s never been the same since.

Bingo. This is going to be it. NH lake home probably only a tactic. A sideline in his goals. Of course, his extended family may use the lake home. I have no idea what security will be instituted for just family members.

I visited area up close to former President Nixons home in San Clemente, California. And security was quite tight with cameras everywhere on all nearby streets. Friends and I stopped on public street unknowing that Nixons home was nearby. Police arrived in less then one minute. Nixon was not there. This was at night and none of us saw any signs.

I visited area near President Nixons home in Key Biscayne, Florida. Near Miami, Florida. Again cameras everywhere with signs that stated No Stopping Do not get out of vehicle. As a young curious person I stopped and got out. On all utility poles were loud speakers. And over the loud speaker came the stern words - Get back into you car NOW. Nixon was not there. We promptly left the area. Key Biscayne is quite nice.

Default Brilliant! Bravo!

That needs to be published in the Union Leader, or maybe some newspaper that people really read, like the Laconia Sun.

With material like that you could write for Stephen Colbert, I heard he was running!

Default Is L.A. interested in Romney?

I wouldn't read much into the Times article. Not front page news. Neither is Romney out here. L. A. doesn't pay attention to much but itself.

If you ask me what will happen to the Lake if Romney wins, it will gain some notice, as in how Kennebunkport did with the Bush's. However, nobody West of the Mississippi really has a clue where Kennebunkport is, they didn't schedule a trip to go see it, buy real estate out there, or anything of the sort.

The Lake is still a well-kept secret in the Western U.S. I'd worry more about Adam Sandler talking about it than Romney.

The flip side: if Romney loses, nobody's going to think that the Lake is some sort of 3-mile Island.

Default Romney gets secret service protection

We don't have to wait for Romney to become President we can see what it will be like this summer:

TAMPA - Mitt Romney's presidential campaign has been informed that it will start receiving Secret Service protection on Thursday, two campaign sources and a senior Republican tell ABC News.

Secret Service protection is being given to the campaign not because of a specific threat but because of the increase in crowd sizes as the primary season has progressed over the past few weeks, according to the sources, who refused to be identified because they don't have authority to comment on such matters publicly.

The Secret Service is charged with protecting presidential candidates in addition to the president himself, and providing protection to a candidate before he secures a nomination has become fairly common. Such decisions are made by the Department of Homeland Security, in consultation with congressional leadership.

The Romney campaign, which has long traveled with private security of its own, did not request Service protection, and was approached about the additional security steps in the weeks following the New Hampshire primary, the sources told ABC News.

Officials with the campaign and the Secret Service declined to comment on the decision.

Romney will become the only current Republican candidate with Secret Service protection. Herman Cain became the first candidate to receive Service protection, in November, but he ended his candidacy in December.

Latest on newswire: Mitt Romney to Receive Secret Service Protection

http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/politics...ce-protection/

The Lake may not be the same this summer with those Secret Service boats and helicopters patroling the waters.

Could be real busy this summer around Wolfeboro !

I think Mitt is going to be really busy campaigning all over the country this summer and may be here LESS than he usually is.
