Today when I click on New Posts all the new posts come up as usual but then there is a breaak in the page and a message that reads

The threads below have not been updated since your last visit but still contain unread posts.

And there are numerous pages of threads listed. Problem is I have read all the posts in these threads and don't believe they should be showing up. Maybe just a hiccup in the new programming the webmaster is doing?

A member wrote to me about the fact that the New Posts listing went away after each session, even though some of them were still unread. They asked if there was a way to keep the unread threads tagged as unread from session to session.

To try to correct this I changed a setting so that unread tags are recorded on the server, instead of a cookie. The server will retain the unread tags for 10 days or until the thread is read.

I just made the change a few hours ago and I'm just trying it out. If it is not working out for members who like to use the New Posts listing then I can change it back. Try it for a day or two and give me some feedback.

I like it better this way also. It seems to be accurate for me now, and I like the fact that I can see some updated threads later in the day if I didn't read them immediately the first time I checked in.

Seems to work OK - and maybe it will gain accuracy after a while. I suggest leaving it running for a week or so before changing it back unless other big issues come up. Now, about that apparently new setting that requires 5 minutes between posts.....

As of today (9-10-08) I see this:

You last visited: Yesterday at 08:38 PM

but everything posted 9-1-08 or later shows up as unread. Clicking the button in each thread to show unread posts shows every post 9-1-08 or later, including the ones I have already read.

I had 5 pages when I clicked on New Posts,4 1/2 of which were not new.I like the way it was configured before which is for the actual New Posts.

I have to agree. This is more confusing and more time consuming, and I don't think it's just a matter of getting used to it.

I vote for the old presentation.

I am getting five pages of posts that go back to 9/1/2008 as well. Hard for me to tell what is old and what is new.

Last night after I finished reading the forum, including this thread, I went into quick links and clicked on mark all forums as read. I have no duplications this morning.

Last night going into the forums, I experienced essentially the same events that others are talking about, but not pages of them, just maybe 20 new forums "not read", but I had read most of them.

Just remember all, patience, patience, patience.

It seems like most of you prefer the old New Posts display even though they are lost between sessions. I may give it a day or two more to see if anyone else has comments.

Since the posters in this thread are regular users of the New Posts function I'm posting the 3 options I have below, just FYI. It was originally set to #1 and is now set to #2. I'm not sure if #3 would be any better than #1:

This option controls how threads and forums are marked as read.

1. Inactivity/Cookie Based - once a user has been inactive for a certain amount of time (the value of the session timeout option) all threads and forums are considered read. Individual threads are marked as read within a session via cookies.

2. Database (no automatic forum marking) - this option uses the database to store thread and forum read times. This allows accurate read markers to be kept indefinitely. However, in order for a forum to be marked read when all threads are read, the user must view the list of threads for that forum.

This option is more space and processor intensive than inactivity-based marking.

3. Database (automatic forum marking) - this option is the same as a previous option, but forums are automatically marked as read when the last new thread is read.

This is the most usable option for end users, but most processor intensive.

I like the idea of being able to see the new even after my session has ended, sometime I just don't have time to read them all. The problem seems to be that it is looking to far back and not at when I last visited. Currently I have last visited 9/10 at 3:38pm and when I click view 1st unread in a thread it takes be back to 9/1 and I know I have read those. I also have threads with unread posts that I have read but again it is looking at 9/1 as the date. I hope I am explaining this well...

If option 2 works correctly I vote for that. I don't always have time to read all I want, so I'd really like an accurate marking of the threads I have actually read. I don't pay any attention to the unread forum mark as I almost always use the "New Posts" option.

I like the current iteration. The demarcation point between new unread and old unread seems to be pretty accurate for me.

I don't really care that is says there are X pages of unread posts, I pretty much know where I left off and can easily ignore the additional pages.

Have to try the quick link "mark forums read" but I will not know results until next week when back from the lake.
So without that, I like the old method as I am opening too many previously read threads now.

Let's go back to the old way. I tried to get used to it, but I guess I'm too old to adjust to the new way. Seriously, it shows new threads and I read them already. I vote for # 1.

This advice worked perfectly for me.

Thanks Don, this is great. Sorry that some are having trouble. I hope it can be resolved. I always hate having the new post lost if I can't get through them all in one sitting. That makes me save up even more until I have the time. A catch 22 that never seems to work out well.

Upthesaukee's advice of marking all thread read is a great concept to clear the decks when you want to start over.

OK, I am ready to learn something new. How do you mark a single thread as having been read without going into it one at a time.

Hard to believe that some threads are just not for everyone.

Well, I thought I'd dig this thread back up .............

Don - I for one have gotten quite use to using the "Quick Links" / "Mark threads as read" option now for a couple of weeks and find it not be be an issue at all. In fact I like the idea that if I didn't get to read all the threads in a particular session that I skip the "Quick Links" when closing and have those threads re-appear on my next session.

I didn't at first but I have grown to like this new set-up~ !!

For those who don't know what I am talking about -- If, at the end of a session in the forum, you have read all the threads that you care about and do not want to see them re-appear "below the line" on your next sign-in. Then simply go to the menu line of the forum (Home/Forum/Galleries ..... New Posts, et al) just before you "Log Out" and click "Quick Links", scroll down and there is an option for "Mark Forums Read". By clicking this before exiting, no older threads will re-appear when you sign back in.

Again Don, an extra step in the process, but it's kinda slick once you get in the habit!!
