Default Transmission Fluid - what do you use?

I have a 260 hp Mercruiser V8 I/O stern drive.

I need to add a bit of transmission fluid and was curious what typr / brands others use.

I assume a synthetic ATF would be appropriate i.e. Redline?

Thanks.

Careful about mixing with what's in there already i.e. synthetic/non synthetic, I'd check with a service dealer.

Are you sure you have a transmission? I assume you have a 260/hp v-8 with an Alpha or perhaps Bravo drive. They do not use transmissions. You need some gear lube. Go to any marina on the lake, they will have what your looking for. DO NOT USE ATF for drive lube! KABOOM!

I am (obviously) new to boats - a car fanatic trying not to get too involved with a new hobby/engine/money pit.

I was told and assumed that it was transmission fluid - sounds like I better bring it to a marina.

Thanks.

Don't need to bring it to the dealer. Just pick up a bottle of Mercruiser gear lube and a service manual. Being a car fanatic, you'll have no trouble working on boats. Probably won't use your creeper so much though...
