Labor Day SHUTDOWN
Wow, what a difference a week makes--there was NOBODY at the lake this weekend and a ton of businesses shut down for the season. This is our fifth summer in Moultonborough, and it has always seemed to be more of a fast decline rather than off a cliff. Just me?

All the high school kids are back in school, some involved in sports and other after school activities and can't work. They already lost the college kids weeks ago. For a lot of places that would have closed in another month anyway, it's not worth it to try to find new workers, if they even could, for a month of business. So they close.

post labor day
Don't forget that weather played a big part of slow weekend too.

My boat had an issue so I had it pulled early, we are in winter mode now, with the boats at least. It was very pleasant driving around last week both on and off the water.

Another week or two and the leaf peepers will be out in droves, and they come everyday, not just weekends. Busiest time of year for some. You just don't see them from your boat/marina.

Been like that for the last few years.
I think what hurts most is last few years the 'summer' weather extends way into Sep/Oct so we tend to want to take the boat out later, or drive out later, to get an ice cream (oh sorry closed) or that special summer restaurant (oh sorry closed) more than years where Labor Day on was mostly crap shoot. |

2001?
When the family first rented waterfront at the lake around 2001 we chose the week that includes labor day thinking its only 4 days off work. We were shocked to find so many closed businesses that week. Never did that week again.
