Red face Weirs Cam Observations

In the weirs cam pictures there appears in the lower left an object (yellow in color) that looks to be submerged under the ice or water. Anyone care to guess what it could be? The other notable observation is how much open water there is off in the distance - I hope folks are taking care and staying off ice! We have seen so many people, pets and machines fall through the ice down here in the Merrimack Valley this season.

Default Out out damn spot

I'm going to go with a spot on the lens for this... if it were something in the water it would have moved some...

I went over Tuesday night to look, but nothings visible from the shore beside the peir in that area, so its under some amount of water. There are several spots in that area where the yellow sand is showing thru clearings in the muck on the bottom, and that could be it, but we'll most likely have to wait till swiming weather to get final answer.

The good news is its only about 10' of water, so its at least a small space ship.

Default It is IN not ON!

Definitely something IN the water - not ON the lens. But more likely a picnic tabel or box or something blown in by the mini hurricane served up last week. Doesn't seem to have moved much if at all in the week it has been there....but it is definitely just off the deck closer to the shore - and under the water. From the orange gate draw a line with your finger parallel to the frame - and you'll come to the yellow box - ripples on it - so it's not a lens blemish.

Dont get to excited, its just enough to hide the thin spots in the ice.

Speaking of Champ, did you see the news report this week with the two fishermen who got a really good Champ video? Pretty cool!

As for the Weirs Cam object, I think it's the cooler with Jimmy Hoffa...finally making its way to the surface.

Talking Seems to be a sign of some sort

Since Weirs Guy asked I grabbed a frame from todays webcam and added an arrow to point out what I think people are talking about. Then I got curious myself so I borrowed some time on the company's Cray and through some very advanced and, dare I say it, hush hush image enhancement techniques I was able to just, and I say maybe, make out what the object is. I think it's a sign that blew in. Look for yourself and see what you think.

Could it possibly be a piece of ice that broke loose after the dog was on it?

Im gonna vote for a misplaced real-estate sign- or some kind of sign of similar size.

Maybe a danger- thin ice sign.

A rock bass you say ...well I've heard they don't exist in Lake Winnipesaukee. Something to do with global warming and rising water levels or the like. That said I have seen pictures of said fish and while they bear a superficial resemblance to the object in the water I think everyone can clearly see it isn't a rock bass. Compare the picture above to the one of a rock bass below

Actually, you can see it quite clearly this morning (Saturday).

Default Forensic photo analysis reveals....

I sent the image off to a friend at SP HQ and had it enhanced using the latest crime scene photo analysis techniques. The yellowish hue was due to excess tannins in the water, but after a little filtering this is what the picture revealed:

Attachment 682

Rumor has it that a suspect in a well worn aluminum boat coated in rustoleum paint was observed trying to attach the sign to a nearby piling, but it fell off shortly thereafter. Authorities are trying to track the suspect down using a Walmart receipt found near the scene...

Default For real

This one is for real ... one morning a few weeks ago, as I was doing my morning Weirscam looksee, it looked like there was a fire on that deck, to the left of the gate. There was smoke too and it was glowing bright yellow. I looked back a couple of times, and I was starting to figure out how to call the fire department fronm Connecticut. Then it disappeared. Did anyone spot something similar?

Default Wow! I missed a lot while I was away!

Gee whiz! When I returned from the cruise, I apparently missed a lot of posts that occured during my absence! Tonight I just stumbled upon this one, and enjoyed a really loud laugh!

Mee-n-mac you are, without question, the silliest person I know! I like that in a person! Thanks for the great bellylaughs - I needed that tonight.

Spent the morning with the Water Works fellows - getting our valve defrosted and opened - then the next few hours repairing the "weak spots" which were quickly found by the amazing water pressure in the Weirs.

Then about 8 more hours of scrubbing and painting - interrupted a few times by folks who dropped in to say howdy, and one phone call - poor guy wanted to place a take-out order.

Progress is definately under way! Thanks for all the encouragement Mac, and Lexxi and Weirs Guy!

See you all really really really soon!

I tried a few weeks ago to go see it from all the public land around it, but its only going to be cleanly visible from the peir or in the water. Not to worry though, 50° water and I'm going in!

Default Hey guys over here

I watched these guys on the motion Weirscam going from right to left like they were heading to Merideth. They made a turn and headed towards the infamous mysterious image. Things were looking good when they started to drift a little to port. I started yelling at them, but of course they wouldn't listen. I even put an "x" on the screen, to no avail.

They kept on heading into the dock, or the gas dock (too early for a lobster roll at Waldo Peppers, unless they wanted to be first in line ).

Maybe the next boat in will stop by and look!

Default X marks the spot!

I hope the X is water proof or it will disappear.

I am seriously considering a road trip to the "other side" of the Lake to investigate while I'm up there next week. Stupid? Yes, especially with gas prices where they are. But I'm as curious as the next guy when it comes to this thing.

I have heard that Sunset Bob went over to check it out a week or 2 ago and he couldn't find a ding-dong thing there in the water. It must be like the locnessmoster and disappears when something gets to close.

Saw it clear as day yesterday when the water was calm.

I still say its sand on the bottom showing throught the weeds. Maybe this weekend will be warm enough for an up close inspection.

Default Sunday, May 7 10:45A.M.

I saw this boat on the Weirs Motion Cam maneuvering around the area for a while. I asssume he was looking for the mystery object... He was getting close, but he wasn't close enough to the pier.

Someone looking at the Motion Weirs Cam via the internet should coordinate via cell phone to someone else in a boat looking for the object.

The closest he got was about 5 boat lengths to the object. It looks like he gave up at 10:51. So close...

Talking It came from Weirs Beach

There is a Bug on the cam watching us right now. He looks like he escaped from one of those great old Sci Fi movies that played at the Drive in that you only got to see half of if you were lucky

I found a towel off the NASWA in 8 to 10 feet of water a few years back. Could be something like that.

Default Floods subside...back to regularly scheduled programming

Still there today....

Kevin, the Hoffa theme was suggested earlier.

It's too perfect a square and too consistent to be sand on the bottom.

Perhaps when they are done rebuilding the barn in NJ, we can get the FBI to investigate and tell us what it is!

In looking at the webcam the other day, I found this view with "items" clearly caused by the play of the sun on the optics of the camera. This got me thinking that perhaps this mysterious object might be just that, an optical illusion caused by some combination of light and lens.

However, in reviewing the history of this thread, it's been spotted at all hours of the day, on sunny days, cloudy days, snowy days, windy days, calm days...

So much for yet another theory!

... it ain't no rock bass. Again for the slow learners ( ) this is one of Grant's rock bass(es ?). I think the new streaks recently uncovered are UFOs and I'm gonna file a complaint with the NHMP as the seem to be blatantly ignoring the 600' NWS restriction. What, do they think they're on Newfound Lake or something ! That kind of behavior might be tolerated down south, over the Ossipee's, in places like Tamworth but not in these parts !

Default OK, the mystery has been solved!

I finally had a chance last week to swim over to the area in question to see what the mysterious item was, and am pleased to report, it’s a PILE OF ROCKS.

Yep, I was a little disappointed myself.

Most of that side of the pier is covered with weeds on the bottom, but in this one area about 10’ x 15’ is a bed of rocks covering the bottom in the same location as our mystery item.

In the interest of sustaining speculation surrounding the Weirscam Submerged Mystery Object (WSMO), I propose we find out what exactly is under that pile of rocks.

I still think that, with all the hoopla accompanying new theories regarding the demise of Jimmy Hoffa, we could easily go viral with this thing and convince the government to spend more tax dollars to track another bogus lead. The media circus would mean a nice pay day for local businesses, and perhaps even lead to an episode of Dateline NBC. Book deals. Movie deals. Next thing you know, the royalties are allowing us to fund a three-day ForumFest Extravaganza at Castle in the Clouds, with the Stones as entertainment.

Party on,

g

Sorry Weirs Guy, I’m afraid that I have to disagree with you. This summer when I was at The Paradise Beach Club I went over and took a look and there was a very large, flat, square thing in the water, but I could not make it out and didn’t have my polarized lens with me. We finally made it back by today to get a closer look and were able to get a reasonably clear shot of it. It is a sign for Ganong Real Estate. This is taking their slogan of being Waterfront Specialists a little too far!

Here is the link, for some reason I am unable to insert the picture correctly.

IG,

Thanks! That finally covers the mystery for me. I'll admit I was a bit skeptical about the pile of rocks answer. The object seemed to perfectly rectangular and too bright to be explained that way.

Someone better plant something in front of one of the webcams this winter. It's almost time for us to need the diversion to get us through.

Here's hoping that anything planted will be obscured by a thick layer of ice to play on this year, as long as it's gone by early April!

Well RG, we'll have to get together and compare gps coordinates some time! The sad part is I did an awful lot of swimming to find the wrong object in the water. Oh well, I'm off to visit the pile of rocks and cry.

Perhaps the Ganong sign blew in after your swim?
If I had my bathing suit and goggles along I would have jumped in for a closer look and retrieval. Maybe next time.

Wink Well that's a rap as they say!

Amazing - from the humble beginnings of this thread - way back when - curiosity over a simple square object that my six year old daughter actually pointed to while we were viewing the webcam. Thanks to all who participated in this thread - and to those of you who tried to figure out what that object was. At times this thread felt a bit like that old grammar school game of telephone - with everyones guesses turning into fact....but in the end - I can say it - I KNEW THERE WAS SOMETHING THERE!!!!

Enjoy the fall colors around the lake - and the snow and ice which will follow - and the spring run-off and rains (may they NOT be as pletniful as this past year) and we will see you all again NEXT summer!
