Note: This thread contains the criticism of me for asking if there was a connection to the Lakes Region for this thread. In an attempt to get that thread back on track the posts about me have been moved here.

Ok...lets see if I can come up with some replies...

Waterville Valley is located at Rt 93-Exit 28, and Meredith is located at Exit 23, with about 25-miles separating Meredith and WV. Since the WV ski area was built in 1966, many many people from the lakes region go there to ski for a day trip, especially to take advantage of the Waterville Valley two-fer Mondays and Fridays, and the light weekday skier crowd. With over 2000' of vertical, and an elevation over 4000', the WV ski area draws big on lakes region day-trippers.

Geographically, the southern edge of the White Mountain National Forest is considered by many to be 4500' high Sandwich Dome mountain, or Mt Sandwich, which is partially located in the towns of Waterville Valley, and Sandwich. Mt Sandwich sits on the border between Squam Lake, which is definately located in the lakes region, and Waterville Valley.

Waterville Valley is a very large town in area, but a very small town in people and confined developement, and is a huge resource for water, which is probably why it was originally named Waterville. All the water flows down the Mad and Pemi Rivers, eventually passing through the Lakes Region Waste Water Treatment Facility in Franklin, where all the sewerage effluent from the large lakes region sewer connector sends the lakes region sewerage to get treated.

In brief, the town of Waterville Valley is connected to the lakes region as a recreation spot, a source of drinking water, and a source of water for treating the lakes region sewerage.......three very important links.....at least!

Most recently, the Brenda Ganong motorcycle ride for supporting breast cancer medical research , which was supported by many local lakes region businesses including the Meredith Village Savings, Hannaford's, and Gilford Wal-Mart, to name a few of the heavy hitters, plus numerous other local, lakes region businesses chose a motorcycle route from Weirs Beach to Waterville Valley and back for their route. Probably, the Ganong motorcycle route of Weirs Beach-Waterville Valley-Weirs Beach was chosen because it's a terrific ride. Many bikers took part so there's a lot of people from the lakes region who have some reason to visit WV.

It all adds up to show that while Waterville Valley, at 25-miles away, is hovering just at the northern border to the lakes region, it is definately a go-to recreation spot for many people in the lakes region.....plus a watershed supply area for water......hence the name.....Waterville.

And, while I cannot identify one gallon of water from another, it seems very likely that a large volume of the Waterville Valley water travels through underground aquifers that discharge volumes of water into the nearby, spring-fed Squam Lakes and Lake Winnipesaukee.

And, what-o-what would happen to Squam Lakes, Lake Winnipesaukee and the lakes region if it had a lot less water; with plenty of that water originating from the very large in area, and almost totally forested, mountain town just north of the lakes region, Waterville Valley?

Agreed, FLL posts mostly nonsense and many a time completley false information.

And yes, this is an extremely tragic event.

But I view Don's comment as a friendly "shot across the bow" and not as being cold or uncaring.

I think Don has been extremely tolerant of FLL's nonsense, in my humble opinion.

And maybe the question was posted as a friendly reminder to let us all contemplate our future posts?

Again, this is my perception of Don's post. Obviously others have a different take....

Never thought It would get to this...but.....FLL, I'm with you on this one. That was the most thoughtful and sensitive post that I have seen on this forum in many a day. I don't even want to try to imagine what that 92 year old man is going through during this most trying time.
Maybe, just maybe, somebody who reads FLL's post will be able to supply some information that will help bring this tragic issue to a resolution. I know it's a real long shot, but many of us buy lottery tickets every week too.
Don, you have had a bazillion opportunities to censure FLL for his meandering and senseless posts. I feel as many others here that your timing this time around is a bit insensitive.
At the end of the day, it is your site, you are, of course, able to do with it as you please.

I thought it tied in well with the article Skip quoted in a different thread http://www.unionleader.com/article.a...7-2979fd8460a4 regarding the F&G search and rescue budget and how this search had tied up many resources.

While I realize Waterville Valley is not in the Lakes Region, we share many of the state resources with WV.

Once in a while, not often, actually hardly ever, the people who live in the Lakes Region realize that they have been fortunate to feel that special love that one gets from being in this wonderful area. Their hearts overflow and they try to help someone in trouble. They ask for help from the Winnipesaukee Forum even though they know it is just a bit further away from what is technically the Lakes
Region in the minds of some.

They know that if they were in this position, they would want to be helped.

Lucky1, you couldn't have said it better. I have never seen such a touching and heartfelt post from FLL. There are times when we just have to relax the rules. Could you even imagine your most treasured loved one lost in the forest, hundreds searching, with no word night after night.

I too feel for the man who has lost his wife in the wilderness, be it the lakes region or not! She could be anywhere, and folks from this forum could help locate her. To all who defended Don, shame on you! He is way off base on this one. Can we get a description and picture pasted here?

Dons question was a fair one but the timing was way off. Everyone reading these posts especially fll has a heart that cares about his fellow New Englander. We can't imagine the pain the family must be going through. Emotions are running high here on this topic, we all need to take a breath and settle ourselves. I am most sure that under these unfortunate circumstances involving someones wife, Mom , Grandmom we all are very concerned for her and aren't really expressing ourselves with the proper tact and couth as we know are appropriate with such a potentially sad situation.

I don't know... but I don't think Don was being cold. I do think it's an honest question... FLL's response was also an honest, respectful response.

While I understand your apology is to "smooth the waters", I firmly believe you have nothing to apologize for.

It is interesting to me that some of the folks here demanding your head have posted things completely inappropriate in the past, or have even been moderated for their behavior (or remain on permanent moderation), yet find fault in your simple question!

I do admire that pretty thick layer of skin you have developed. Many folks would never have been able to put up with the foolishness you have had to deal with as owner/moderator here over the past 15 years!

That said I've learned a long time ago that you very seldom post here as the moderator. And I've learned that when you do, there is always a very good reason why!

Anyway it is always it is a pleasure to engage you in a thread, regardless of the reason, as it is too rare of a treat!

I am a firm a firm supporter of Skip - usually. His posts about anything related to the law are almost always spot on and presented well.

I prersonally like reading many of FLL's posts. Some could be called eccentric, but I enjoy reading them.

I have to side with FLL on this one.

By the way I think Don wrote the response before he gave it a lot of thought. He simply didn't intend his response to sound like it did.

This is not criticism. This is a simple explanation of what I felt was happening. I was actually surprised to see that all posts were read by the moderator?

I hope that Beth Upton is soon found alive and well and returned safely to her family. Time is not usually an ally in these situations.

I think the intent of some of the comments in this thread is there seems to be a "double standard" for some people regarding posting rules.

Not quite in the Lakes Region? Threads off topic? Wow.

In the vast scheme of things, does it really matter? Will lives end if there is a thread that is a few miles outside the border? Does it matter if a conversation veers off track?

Are there really police out there (and I don't mean the moderator) with hard and fast statutes about when or if we go off topic or post something that might be slightly outside the geographical region of the lake?

I have been known to mention NJ and Massachusetts. I know that isn't against the rules (although perhaps it should be. LOL)

The upshot of all this is that this is a huge community of people who love the lake, the lakes region, NH and, yes, even all of New England. That is what has drawn us together even if most of us don't know each other one tiny little bit, but I don't think that really means we can't go out of that little comfort zone every so often. There is no wall around the lake.

Of course, a thread about the depth of snow in the mountains of Tibet would be a little off the mark, but a thread about a woman lost in Waterville Valley doesn't seem to be too far outside bounds of reasonableness.

We are all one community, people, brought together by a body of water. I think we need to allow for good wishes and prayers for someone on the fringes of the lakes region.

Having said that, I think the moderator (sorry, can't keep track of your name) had the right to say or think whatever he chooses. This is HIS website and he does make the rules. However, in my humble opinion, I don't think they need to be rigid. I do think, however, that they should be applied consistently so we all do know what they are.

I will shut up now. Please, do not jump all over me. I can pretty much guarantee that THAT should be against the rules.
