Question What Kind of Ice Fishing Is This?

Late Saturday afternoon, several fishermen showed up in the Fourty Islands and proceeded to drill 12-16 holes, next to which they iced in their gear (stick with line & hook, no flag) into the pile of ice chips. The line & hook was left on the stick, not in the water. No one showed up on Sunday (unless it was very late in the day). I don't think the fish are going to jump out of the hole to get the hook, but there was a small dead fish next to one of the holes. A year or two ago we observed a similar set-up on the Broads side of the islands, but then the lines were in the hole and frozen solid. No one checked the rigs the two days we were there, and they had obviously been like that for several days by the thickness of the ice covering the hole. What kind of fishing is this?

Sounds like ice fishing, and it sounds like that's exactly what they got....ice!!!!

Probably a bunch of southerners up here and thought they were doing the right thing... Southerners like from Haverhill or Chelmsford

Sounds to be a good setup to just sit and have a few beers and not have to worry about running to and fro to take care of lines.

Default Cusk?

Sometimes the popping flags get in the way of beer consumption and meditation (medication?) well ... you can rig a cusk line (no flag) and leave it unattended. As for the hook not in the water .... the guys were probably passed out somewhere.
