Default Cannot find a motor for my boat!

I am currently restoring a 1971 Glastron GT-150 boat. I am hoping to have it done in the next 2 months. I need to find a 75-90 HP outboard for it, but I am actually having trouble finding a pre owned one.

I am looking for a Mercury specifically and I contacted every dealer in NH. I either got no response or not available. Prefer early 90's or newer with controls and paying up to $3000. Craigslist/LetGo/Facebook Marketplace seem like slim pickings too.

Any sellers? Any thoughts?

Thanks!

This man Joel contacted me recently about some of the outboards I find now and then. He's in Manchester.

I would suggest you contact him because he was not interested for the most part in the newer stuff but instead the older stuff-what you seem to be interested in:

Jason,

Did you try Dave's Motorboat Shoppe in Gilford? He usually has a number of used outboards for sale. If he doesn't have he could certainly point you in the right direction.

Good luck with your cool project and be sure to post final pics!

Dan

If craigslist doesn't work out on the motor search, "Outboard Exchange" in Connecticut used to rebuild certain 2 strokes in the size range you're looking for. Also, M&M Salvage in Meredith might be a source for controls and cables for an older engine if you find one that doesn't have those accessories. Another possible engine to consider in that size range would be the 2 stroke Yamaha 90, they were a popular engine for smaller boats. I believe that the 3 cylinder Mercury 75-90 HP engines from the late 80's to early 2000's are actually a Yamaha power head. Good luck, saw you're making progress on the boat in the other thread.

Jason, this one might be worth a call. Looks like a late 80's 75 HP, sort of a mini tower of power (4 cylinder vs. 6) They were good runners in the day, looks like it has controls too.

When your in the area it would be worth going in person to Fays and speak personally to Jeff. Calling the marina is one thing but going in person makes a difference!

Located at the intersection of Route 175 and Route 25/3 in Holderness, across the road from Little Squam Lake, https://www.facebook.com/NHmobilemarine/ seems like a good place to go looking for a 10-20 year old Mercury two stroke outboard.

Just up the road, also on Little Squam, there's Squam Lake Boat Livery, for used Evinrude and Johnson, https://www.facebook.com/squamboatlivery/, and River Edge Marina, www.riveredgemarina.com, for used Mercury and Honda.

Powerboat Swap shop on Facebook...

and you might want to check with John Spooner @ Diamond Shine. He is running around in an old Viper.... might have a line on a motor for you.

I think calling local outboard dealers is a good way to go. People are re-powering all the time and if you let them know they can keep an eye out for what you are looking for. EBay is another source but likely not local (lots of Florida dealers). I realize you said Mercury, but you might want to consider the old Yamaha 90 (two strokes). Three cylinder, light weight, run great, and near bullet proof. Don't think they changed the engine design for the last twenty years they were available. Used to be a real popular choice for Boston Whaler Montauk re-powers back in the day until they stopped making them.

Hey Jason, here's an inline 6 90 HP with controls . Looks to be from about 1978 if I'm remembering my vintage Mercury decals by year.

I did go visit Joel today, I was looking for a 60's 18 HP OEM. He had quite a few to choose from including some Evinrude Fastwins. He seems to run a professional business, with his primary clientele being fishermen looking for light weight 2 stokes and not full-on cosmetic restoration.

His prices seem reasonable and flexible with accessories such as electric start. I will let you know how I make out as I found a motor that will work with the old controls that came with my "project boat".

That's good news, what did you end up with? Please keep us posted on progress with the boat rebuild work as well.
