Saw an ambulance and fire & rescue down at the Wolfeboro docks a short time ago. Anybody know what's going on?

4 persons taken out of the water from boat in distress. Wolfeboro fire boat 1, Tuftonboro fire boat 1 and N.H. Marine patrol all in scene. Patients brought into Wolfeboro dockside for transport to hospital for evaluation

PFD's, personal flotation devices, aka life saving vests, aka a Mae West vest are not very good for actual swimming. They are designed for keeping you afloat in a vertical position, and keeping your head up and above the water, but not so good for swimming. They keep you from going under and drowning in water temps below 60-degrees or if you are injured, tired, or half-drunk, or something ..... but they don't give you a balanced buoyancy which is what you need for swimming the overhand crawl, breast stroke, or side stroke.

You never ever see swimmers who wear a pfd while swimming laps because it makes actual swimming about three times slower for swimming laps.

What works totally fabulous in the big waves is a good quality foam swimmer's belt that's worn around the waist, or a home made foam noodle belt made with a 3" or a 4" wide foam noodle.

For extra big waves and wind, wearing two swimmer's belts at the same time works twice as good with double the buoyancy, double the flotation, and double the fun ...... a double noodle belt .... worn around the waist!

Typically, everyone always thinks they are a lot better swimmer than they actually are, and can swim a further distance than they can do.

Absolutely. But having seen the weather yesterday, this is an extreme case--the captain, the swimmers themselves, the boat rental company. Hard to understand how none of these people stopped it before it happened.

I hope everyone is OK, and then does some serious thinking before next time.
