Default Mrs. Hornes ..Wolfeboro.

I, and a few other Ice Boaters used to come up to Wolfeboro in the very early 70s. We stayed at Mrs. Hornes (Sp) on South Main Street. It was an old victorian house on the east side of the street. The house was maintained as a "Bed..No breakfast"...The house was impecable. The price for a nights stay was $3.50..+25 cents.. "for the governor".

This was the first time I ever experienced 15 below zero...leaving the house at 6:00 am...on our way to breakfast. The hairs in my nose actually froze. Does anyone remember this house..?? NB

Yes, I think it was Mrs. Horne's that is right beside the hospital, right? And the hospital owns it now.

Default Mrs. Hornes

Mrs. Hornes' home is on the south corner of South Main Street and Crescent Lake Ave, and it is owned by the hospital. There is a house between this house and the hospital, also owned by the hospital.

It is my understanding that the hospital wants to keep these two homes for their use, and as an attempt at softening the impact of the big, new hospital building.

Funny, I heard the hospital wanted to tear them down but the town didn't want them to. Wonder which is true???

Here's what my interest is. Mrs. Horne was One of Three Hornes (Sp) in the Winni Area.... Maybe they are ALL connected. I don't know. The three Hornes (Sp) may go back 80 years. I am aware of a Horne that was intimately involved with the Wolfeboro Airpark. This has been discussed on this forum at length. Another Horne was a BIG Speedboat guy on the lake back in the 20s.

When I stayed at Mrs Hornes (early seventies) rooming house... she shared the duties with her sister...as we understood it at the time. They were both in their eighties. Just wondering. NB

Default Mrs. Hornes ..Wolfeboro.

There was a Horne family in Alton during the 1950s. They owned the 5 & 10 Cent store , and I believe there was a Judge Horne also.

There was, indeed, a Judge Horne, and he owned the 5 & 10. He was not a lawyer (you didn't have to be a lawyer in those days to be a judge), but he did have a very clear view of justice based on what was right and wrong. When I got my driver's license my father told me to obey the rules, but to be particularly careful in the Alton district. You see, my father and Archie Horne had been college roommates, and nobody knew Archie better than my Dad. I remember to this day my father's advice about driving in Alton. !!
