Default Italian subs...

The Italian sub is my benchmark for judging a sandwich shop. Sub Crazy, Lakeside Deli, Huck's Hoagies...All great, with subtle differences...

So, yesterday, I got an Italian from The Squam Lake Marketplace in Holderness...Not subtly different at all. A completely delicious surprise!

The bread (a key to the success) is made in-house. All the ingredients were just delicious and unique.

Piccolo's Market is our go to for Authentic Italian Subs-

on Whittier in Moultonboro... it's a lil bit of a hike for us, but I love their food- their Italian Combo is what we typically get, but everything is delicious and fresh. They sell Italian products that you don't normally see up here.

Also, great desserts are made by the owner, and she's a terrific baker.

I agree they make a great Italian! Actually most of the food they prepare there is excellent! They make the best brownies in the area also…bar none!

Agreed on the brownies! lol. Always recommend it to visitors who come up to visit us! The breakfast sandwiches are fantastic, as are the donuts and muffins
available.

For the price & size...Market Basket in Tilton is the best place to get a sub. Italian, or anything else. Very consistent.

I'm not paying twelve or thirteen dollars for a sub up here

Ditto that for Market Basket at Exit 26, Plymouth, NH or take the scenic route from Exit 25 and drive past lower priced gasoline and Plymouth State University, across the river and past the free-to-see www.plymouth.edu/mwm/ ..... up and down Highland St to the Market Basket.

$5.29 + 8.5% state meals tax for a large sub; Italian, turkey, ham, American, roast beef, or ultimate where it is put together as you watch. Is where the local Plymouth Fire Dept and Police Dept and State Police all go for subs. You know, seems that everyone likes to eat?

You have good taste. I agree with your selections as all being very good, yet different. I'll add the Meredith Station to your list. The roll is fantastic and just an overall good quality sub.

Was in Laconia the other day running errands and needed a quick sandwich.
Happened to be driving by Vista at the time so I ran in and grabbed an Italian right out of the case.
They do have a deli but didn't have time to wait.
I was shocked.....one of the tastiest Italians ever.Who would have thought?

Same for Skelly's Market in Moultonborough, they have very good subs in their case.

When price is factored in, this is unequivocally accurate.

Piccolo has great subs, but they are mucho expensive. Sub Crazy is also out of line with price.

Market Basket is much better than I would've thought.

What we need is a Benedetti's/Marc's in the Lakes Region!

Lakeside Pizza & Grill on Union Ave Laconia, makes a great Italian sub.
On Wednesdays they sell a 'large' Italian for $6.99, or a large meatball, your choice..... IMHO they make the best meatballs around.....

Well it's Wednesday ! Get your 'LARGE' Italian or Meatball for $6.99,
you can't beat this ! I usually order one of each and spilt with wife.
Still, a 'large' I usually each half and save rest for next day.

When you order, mention you want the Wed. special (Italian or Meatball).

To XCR-700... run and grab a few

Enjoy.....

Never cared for Market Basket’s sub roll. To much bread and dry. Some of their other offerings that slide into the microwave are very good and very reasonably priced. Full belly deli in Wolfeboro is good but pricey.

DAMN you, now I want to go up and get a meatball sub,,,

Its soooo hard to get a good meatball sub that has any flavor anymore. Most are just so bland now.

And yet another item to add to my "to do" list; # X stop at Lakeside Pizza for meatball sub. I'll be dead before I get to the bottom of this damn list,,,

I think they are well worth the money. They are pretty much twice the size of most places and definitely good for two people.

A minor and well deserved extravagance in the grand scheme of things these days!

Default Thanks All...

I got a bit of driving to do to try some of these suggestions. Probably spend more in fuel than the cost of the sub.

Love JoJo's.

Wine'ing Butcher does a pretty good job also. And that Mobile Gas Station in Meredith, across from the public docks, is an insiders-bit of trivial knowledge.

The Taylor Family Restaurant, Meredith, did a great job but unfortunately has gone away...HOWEVER... Jason Taylor, the son and master sandwich maker, has recently resurfaced at Lakeside Deli. A much needed expert-hire by the deli. He recognized my voice when I was ordering and came out of the kitchen with a big "How ya doin'"? His Mom is working at a restaurant now, I think in Wolfeboro.

Tell Jason Gary said hello ...I'll ask him if he got any replies.

Default Italian Sub 'Benchmark'

No one compares to Cahill's Sub in Hudson NH. I consider the benchmark.

Going from there, subs are hit or miss in the area. Mostly miss. Some that hit are no longer in business unfortunately as the tourists drive the business and they are only concerned with fast and convenient food.

Annies in Laconia are pretty good. Followed by the Wiinisquam Store and Squam Lake Marketplace.

At one point, I would've agreed with you, but Cahill's, though still good, is no longer great. Same with Nadeau's. They slightly lost their way.

Benedetti's, Marc's, and JoJo's, though? Nope!

I agree with Big Dog and Overlook. The meatball subs at Lakeside Pizza in Laconia. The sauce is sweet and the meatballs have great flavor with the perfect texture.

Wish I was there, NOTHING is better than a good meatball sub on the boat just floating out on the Broads or anchored at a sandbar.

And I like you idea of getting more than one, one for lunch and one for dinner, or maybe even better, save the second for lunch the next day. I enjoy them both hot and cold!

Thanks again for the tip, ENJOY.

It's not an Italian sub unless it is well toasted, so that there is no need for added oil (the meat adds the oil). Anthony's and Louis in Wolfeboro both make it close to what I recall from the Italian/Greek neighborhoods
where I first learned about the Italian sub.

Default Toasted????

Toasted???? Growing up in Reading MA, the go-to place for Italian sub sandwiches was Gregory's on Main St. I never heard of a toasted Italian sub. Good fresh rolls don't need to be toasted. If someone asked for mayo rather than oil, Lou or whoever was making the sandwich would roll the eyes. When they would say "Next", it was large or small Italian with hots, or no hots.

What I would do to go back in time to go to Gregory's with Dad to get two large Italians with hots, and a small tuna sub for Mom. That was a good no-cook dinner for 3.

Dave

I was at one of the local favorite sub-shops, a couple years ago, and the guy in front of me ordered a pastrami sub with "lots of mayo".

The person taking the order happened to also be the owner and he refused to put mayo on a pastrami.

Bet he never tried it, it's great! This is where your toasted roll comes in. Pastrami with sirachi mayo, even better.

REALLY,,, I think I could put mayo or Thousand Island dressing on almost anything. I dont do it, but I could!

Ever have grilled corn on the cob cooked with mayo on it on the Bbq grill??? Its amazing!

This is killing me as I sit here with my poor mans survival breakfast,,,

1 Lb canned ham (Premium Ham at that!) sliced and baked for 15 minutes, then served on toast. Mayo optional,,,

Not sure how long ago you left Reading, but Gregory's closed a few years ago. Now it is a bagel place. My go to is the Italian at Reading House of Pizza, with extra hots

Sure hope its better than the offerings in Andover and North Reading, you could die before you get a good sub in Andover or North Reading. Same for Chinese Food, nothing good to be found here,,, A guy could starve in this area. I've had better hospital food at Lahey!

Enjoy.....
Where is Lakeside Pizza and Grill? I can only find Lakeside Famous Roast Beef on Union...

China Blossom buffet and Mandarin Reading were both GREAT the last time I was at each.

In fact, CB was my go-to for summer school staff luncheons. Yum!

Yes both are very good, but neither is in Andover or North Reading, so its not a quick trip for a to go lunch. Also both are a bit pricey for lunch, but then I guess everything is now,,,

Thanks!

Having never actually lived in those areas, I've only ever perceived the two "norths" as demarcations of socioeconomic status rather than distance/location!

Been very busy. Still amazing to see the restaurant changes on Winni. The closures have been so quick even some of the top rated ones are gone. Covid further screwed up the entire works. Been cruising the site to see what's new or old for eats.

Got it, and again both are good places to go to lunch or dinner with a group, but if you want to to go special, neither is convenient from my location nor priced as an inexpensive take out lunch.

So a couple of things....

Jo-Jo's number 10 all the way.....

Also people have mentioned the price of sub's at Sub Crazy in Meredith, another recent favorite of mine.... Well yes they are pricey.... The also are a tremendous amount of food.... My wife and I stop and get large subs (she gets a sub in a tub to avoid the bread).... There is plenty of meat cheese and Veggies, that we have them for dinner the day we arrive, and then the left overs for lunch on the boat the next day.... Where else do you get two meals for 15$.......

I have heard nothing but great things about Jo Jo’s subs! It’s been a LONG time since I have been there but do remember their prepared food and meats were great!

Default Piccolos all the way!

I can't say enough about the food at Piccolos in Mboro. All their food is high quality and delicious. The desserts are fantastic, the pizzas, prepared eggplant and chicken parmigiana and lasagna are top rated. The owners are wonderful people but be patient - they can get overwhelmed on peak summer days (just like every other business in the lakes region). Try Piccolos - you want be disappointed if you want real Italian versions of Italian food.

When winter comes, you can go to Aruba and enjoy food at one of two restaurants owned by Dave, the owner of Lakeside.

In the meantime, you can enjoy his pizza at the Bank of New Hampshire pavilion.

He's everywhere!

Reading Mass, bah, Watertown, where a high percentage of Italians, Greeks and Albanians were, is where a real Italian sub is made.

Lakeside Roast Beef on Union Street is the one with the great meatball subs. I agree that toasted is best. Lakeside Grille is different, I believe, and inside Church Landing in Meredith. Hopefully others will confirm.

Been the Italian Mafia seaside destination for decades. Slowly eroding away. An Italian once told me the best Italian restaurants are in Scituate and not in the North end. It's been a while since I've been there. There was a bistro to die for just before you hit the beach. The Italian sub has all Italian fixings with provolone and the right combo of red wine and vinegar. I'm hungry!

BH, unless you consider the Charles River seaside, Watertown is a stretch to be called a seaside destination.

All this talk of food and not one decent picture of a really good sub.

I think you guys can do better.

That said, the last thing I really need is convincing I need another sub.

And now my mouth is watering again thinking about that meatball sub I dont have.

Oh and that hair cut I wont be getting where they are playing the Beverly Hillbilly's and not charging like $40.

And, that Sawyers Coffee frappe that is like 90 miles away,,,

Oh and lets not forget that cheap gas we dont have down here for my ZERO MPG truck!

Errrr #@%$#^$%&@!!!

Ok, done,,, for the moment.

Default Vilardo's Italian Deli

In my 60+ years visiting and loving the lakes region, I have never found a crusty bread for a proper hero. As requested in the prior post, here is an outrageously good hero. The only problem is the deli is located in Nutley, NJ, about 10 miles west of the Lincoln Tunnel and 10 minutes from MetLife Stadium. Mangia!

My favorite: Chicken cutlet with prosciutto, mozz and roasted peppers. The bread is from Calandro's Italian bakery which has been in northern NJ for decades.

Default Jojo subs

Jojos subs today. We got the #10, and it was mostly roll, with very little inside. We had give it some “guts”at home, so we were very disappointed. We think they might be trying to keep the price down by skimping on the innards, and that’s not a great option. Their subs were much better earlier this season.

I'm always surprised at the quality of Meredith Mobil's sandwiches! I like their Italian.

Biedermans in Plymouth is also really good.

Default Wine'ing Butcher...Meredith

I had six guests over last weekend. We went to Wine'ing Butcher, Meredith, for subs, etc. Two of us got the steak tips sub.

I think it was perhaps one of the best quality, tastiest steak subs I've had...HOWEVER!!!

It was too small. When I finished, I was not satisfied at all, and wanted more.

I'll not spend $13 for a sandwich that doesn't get the job of hunger-alleviation done! My guests felt the same. Everything they ordered, they felt was too small. I sent them an e-mail about my concern. Heard nothing in return.

In Aruba I liked "El Gaucho".

Upon arriving by taxi we observed several well fed dogs sleeping on the sidewalk.

After having a great dinner and walking out with the leftover piece of what had been a steak the size of Rhode Island, we better understood the healthy looking dogs!

We tried to get a sub via boat at the little store by the Mosquito Bridge on Winnisquam last week.

After discovering that she was #21 to GIVE them our order, she made the executive devision for us to have chips for lunch.

Someday...

That was my suggestion...Have a larger option, I'd pay more.

When it was handed to me in a wrapper, I thought I was getting a hot dog!

Default Jersey Mike's

Jersey Mike's makes an EXCELLENT Italian sub. It is the second-best Italian sub I've had. The best is a place in Pompano Beach, Lou's Giant Subs & Deli.

Not the "Italian" you have in mind, but Gusto Cafe is my #1 spot by far. The bread, quality ingredients, coffee.. even the pizza. Incredible. I wish they could open one in Melvin Village

Wowie-zowie ...... at these prices ..... www.gustocafenh.com/menu ..... you need to be VERY rich to eat at Gusto's in Centre Harbor ....... so thank-you Market Basket in Plymouth for a very high quality Italian sub for $5.29 plus NH tax.

For one surprise week per month the Market Basket price goes down to $4.99 when their Market Basket Italian is designated "Sub of the Week." .....

Has anyone been to Biederman’s Deli in Plymouth? They have excellent subs for about $6.50. It is just a very cool place and you can have a beer or a glass of wine with your sub. Check it out, you will not be sorry.

Biederman's Deli is excellent! Been around for decades! But they offer specialty subs, not one that is Italian. Biederman's just change ownership, hopefully the new owner(s) will keep the tradition! If you are downtown Plymouth, A must-visit! Try the 'Old Man' sub. My favorite!

They do have an Italian sub for $6.50. They also have meatball, Ruben etc. for $6.50 They are on the classics menu, not the specialty sub menu. We used to live in Holderness and my oldest son got so hooked on their subs that every summer when he comes up to Moultonborough, he always has to go up there and get his Italian sub.

Default Sub Crazy closed...

I went to Sub Crazy yesterday with a craving for a "Da Bomb".

Closed and the interior has been gutted.

What next?

I had heard, (not sure if it was on a post in this forum or elsewhere), that Sub Crazy had been sold. However, I was in there just a week or so ago and the owner, (Pete? the tall bald guy), was in there taking orders as usual.

I had heard he was trying to sell also. There may be a re-modeling going on. There's a sign that says opening 9/20.

Love Skelleys! Their rolls are delicious. I like making subs with our home made meat balls but buy their rolls and provolone at the deli (they will wrap them and charge .75 each I believe)
