Default Family Sledding Day/Overnight Options

Hi All,
Had the chance to ride a nice Yamaha sled on Ossipee Lake a couple weeks back, and it reminded me how much I enjoy it. That being said, my wife and I would like to take a few days next Christmas vacation to take our kids (5 & 7) somewhere to snowmobile. We can drive anywhere in the 4-5 hour range from Merrimack, NH. Suggestions on places to go/potential options? I love the idea of a tour or driving somewhere for lunch and back or driving out for an overnight and back, etc. rather than just tooling around.

Thanks!

Default It's Pretty, and difficult...

Hi thinkxingu, to beat the Lakes Region 'when snow conditions are good' 'KEY'.
Not easy to plan a ride so far in advance, however I would contact snowmobile Clubs in the areas you would like to ride in, and get their snowmobile Maps to study in the meantime. I've ridden in Ma, NH, VT, Maine and Canada, and haven't had a bad ride yet!

Best wishes to you and your's.
Terry

That time of year can be tough. Don't always have snow that early. Best bets would be Pittsburg or for day trip or over night watch the Bear Notch area. There is place up there, northern extremes I believe, that does sled rentals also.

Saw that place this past weekend, but conditions weren't great--would February be more reliable, and is Pittsburgh the best place to be looking?

I would recommend looking into 45th Parallel Cabins.

http://www.45parallelcabins.com/

They are a mile away from Swift Diamond Riders clubhouse with great access to trails and destinations by sled. Rentals are available (can't remember the company name) at the clubhouse. Denny is the owner and offers guide services for his guests.

Probably one of your best options if you want early season conditions. We rode out of there this past year on Dec 10th.

Rather go to Pittsburgh/Diamond Pond than Bear Notch. Bear Notch may have good early conditions but it's a small isolated trail network where after a few hours you've seen it all.

Tough to plan ahead though, Christmas is still pretty early and conditions everywhere can be hit or miss.

Default Quebec

Have you thought about a guided tour in Quebec? Only a couple hours north of Pittsburg and snow is pretty much guaranteed.

Contact GARY at Bon Voyage Snow Adventures. You can take any kind of tour you want at very reasonable rates and rent top notch sleds through them.

Just remember, once you ride in Quebec you will be spoiled for life!

I think tomorrow night ( Monday ) on NH Chronicle they are at Northern Extremes which does guided tours etc. We did that a few years ago in Bartlett and had a good time.

I only suggested Bear Notch because it was close and often holds snow earlier in the season before other places do. Maybe a good spot to get the families "feet wet" snowmobiling and see if they like it. Some years Pittsburg also has good snow some years it takes a bit after XMAS to get going. Often Pittsburg trails can be open in December but its also common for only the northern portion of them to be open and not the trails down in town. When that occurs it requires trailering machines up to Magalloway for example. Reading your post it seems as though you don't own sleds. Im not sure if there are places in Pittsburg that you could rent sleds and have them trailer to higher ground. I know places like Lopstick rent sleds if you happen to stay there.
