Default Incorrect form SSA-1099

Last week the SSA sent out the 1099s for year 2020 to those on Social Security. When I finally opened mine and my wife's today, I noted that the numbers on mine reporting SS income and deductions were way off, while those on my wife's 1099 were correct.

I first called the SSA phone number on the back of the form to ask about this and waited through a lengthy list of announcements and menu options. I was told the wait time to talk to someone would be about 1.5 hours. I hung up and called the "local" SS office in Littleton and got through to a live and pleasant voice right away. I related my findings and was told they would investigate and get back to me by late in the day. The same person did call back when expected to report on what was found.

Apparently the same problem occured on any SSA-1099 when tax withholding is not NONE. The SSA has just found out about this glitch and has sent a memo to the local offices. Since the problem is so generic and widespread, it will be fixed ASAP, far faster than if the problem were isolated. Within a week or so corrected forms SSA-1099 will be sent out.

So, if you see wrong numbers on your SSA-1099, and you had some held for taxes, you likely ought to wait a week or so to get the corrected form. I imagine SSA offices will be swamped with calls anyway.

I have to say that my chat with the person at the Littleton office was quite pleasant and unrushed. This certainly was far different from what you hear about dealings with government offices. I imagine it's a matter of pleasantness and office/region size varying inversely with each other.

I'm glad I set my tax withholdings to NONE. No problems with mine. Do these government guys actually TEST the computer stuff they do? Commercial goof ups like this would sink a company. No accountability = stupid mistakes, repeatedly.
