Default Ice In 2022 ?

Sorry if there is already a post on this.

Any thoughts on when Ice in will be declared this year?

Last year Ice-in was declared by Emerson Air on Feb 1st.

Any reports of ice around the lake? Webcam at Center Harbor looks like there is ice out in the harbor.

I was someone pst on FB that 19 mile bay has 6" in spots.

This morning the BearCam showed ice in front of my place. However it only went out few hundred feet.

Default Alton Bay Ice Runway

The Facebook report from this morning showed 4" of ice near the bandstand. The runway manager drilled several test holes and all were 4". Only 8 or 9" more needed to open the runway. I'm not sure how far past Sandy Point has ice.

I understand the requirements for declaring ice out based on the local custom.

How does one define ice in on the big lake?

That Cattle Landing water-way was all slushed up for the first time, yesterday-January 5, with the slush more or less disappearing by late afternoon with temps at 30-degrees.

Ya know ..... to go from slush to ice, the ice has to be happy..... the ice wants it to get cold!

Nothing at all yet by Camp Island. See some ice in the distance between Jolly and Camp Lawrence on Bear

I believe Emerson calls it when they do a fly over and can't find any open water.

There have been a few bands of ice that have settled in between Dollar and Camp Lawrence but they haven’t lasted.

Ice in Alton bay was formed from the launch to just past Sandy Point, and pretty rough looking.

Yesterday while driving along Alton Bay I saw three groups of ice fisher-humans with tent shelters. Only the far shore of the bay had ice. The rest was open and wavey.

The area between Long Island and the end of Moultonborough Neck closed in during Christmas weekend and has stayed that way. The Broads side of the town beach has had some ice in close to shore (very rough, piled up by wind, not looking safe at all). On the north side of the bridge, there is open water in front of Trexler's.

Better check your anti-freeze! According to the National Weather Service, temps next week for Laconia area Monday into Tuesday are expected to be bone chilling cold ranging between a high of 4° and a low of -9° .

Jan 10, 2022; with this relatively warm 34.7 degrees water temp, right now, will the overnight forecast of -2 Monday night, and -4 Tuesday night, be cold enough to make it a big lake, big ice, freeze-over, all across this lake?

Don't know, is too unknown to predict?

Default Ice In Guess

The cold in the next couple of days will really help out, but full ice in will depend on the wind, like it always does. Likely late January for the whole lake as usual.

Default Making ice

Looking at the webcam's around the lake and it looks like significant icing over the past 36 hours. Still not safe to go out on in many areas, but the weekend cold should help even more.

Does anyone have a current picture or view of Meredith Bay??

Not a web cam, but this Facebook group has a guy that seems to be posting pics from Meredith Bay every couple of days. Only 3 more weeks until the tourney!

Looking at the lake from the top of Gunstock today, it seems that everything visible, including the Broads, is iced in, with that very light dusting of snow on top, from today's flurries.

I saw that on the Gunstock mountaintop cam this afternoon as well. Just 2 days ago there was no ice in sight at all from Belknap Point down to Ellacoya and now there's no open water.

I have to say I'm impressed. As a former part-time Belknap Point resident, I can't recall many, if any, other times when so much open water froze up in just 2 days. Usually the area south of Welch Island towards Belknap Point, Ellacoya/LSP is the most stubborn, freeze-resistant area on the entire lake, not counting a few channels. The cold, calm conditions of the previous 1 or 2 nights were exceptional I guess.

Default Meredith Bay is iced in

This morning Meredith Bay had a small layer of snow on top of what I imagine is a thin ice layer. I'm sure the ice will thicken up given the low temperatures forecasted for the next 24-48 hours. Bob houses will most likely be put out in the next week for the brave souls that like to be first.

When I was young, I remember the ice being so thick, construction vehicles used the lake as a shortcut.

Not yet. They post on Facebook every couple of days with a video. Last update was ice thickness at 6-7 inches. Need 12 to open.

Alton Bay today: plane making a low pass over the yet to be opened ice runway. The runway and parking area are marked out however, as noted, not enough ice yet. Tomorrow's snow will not help as it will slow ice growth and will have to be plowed.

Last weekend Meredith bay was open water. Today they were staking out the pond hockey area. How quickly things change

Last I knew WMUR has one... but right now I doubt any prep work is being done.
We had white out conditions due to the wind, which makes it really hard to blow or clear snow... and currently have rain forming ice on the surface.

Notwithstanding other declarations, there is still a lot of open water today off Belknap Point. Skim ice near shore but water further out with reflections of Ossipee Mts visible. I was surprised given 15 deg and calm.

I used to live at Broadview. That part of the lake sometimes acts like there's a hot spring bubbling up from below. (There isn't.)

Good afternoon. Has anyone seen anybody out on the ice between the Rattlesnake landing and Rattlesnake island or know of somebody who has been out to the island yet? Thanks
A friend went to the landing yesterday, saw a truck that has been driving out each day for construction. Said there is generally at least 12" of ice. Not sure where on the island they're headed though or if there are thin parts to be concerned about.
