Any update on the fire?
I'm curious if there's any updates on the fires on Sleepers island.
Was there a response from Alton FD? Was it contained? Any info would be appreciated.

Don't know if it is related but when I was at Glendale docks Monday afternoon the Gilford fire boat came in with a crew. When I joked that they had picked a lousy day to go out training on the lake they told me that they were at a brush fire "on one of the islands". Possibly providing mutual aid to Alton on Sleepers?

I'm pretty sure the red boat in the above picture is the Gilford fire boat.

According to what I heard on the scanner during the fire, four towns responded: Gilford, Alton, Wolfeboro and Tuftonboro. The fire was fairly quickly contained by water pumped by the Gilford and Alton boats through hoses hauled onto the land, but the FD crews spent another hour or so soaking the entire area to ensure no embers could re-ignite. The FD crews were told by someone on the island that a property owner had been burning brush the previous weekend on the land where the fire originated. Without the quick work of the FD crews this fire could have been very bad, as the wind last Monday was strong and gusty. Fortunately, it appears no buildings were damaged.

Thanks
Thanks to all who replied with info.
As a Sleepers owner we often think how disastrous it could be to have a fire on the island. Thanks again

Can someone tell me where on Sleepers the fire was? Was it on the side facing Smith Point, about 5 lots from the castle?
I reported a brush fire there 3 years ago that almost caught the woods on fire, then again this last summer he was at it again burning brush that got out of control. |

Yes, it was at the end of the island facing Smith Point. I believe it originated on the lot behind the big pile of rocks in Smith Point's post #8 above.
