Arrow Please Send Healing Thoughts to WinnDixie!

A couple weeks ago WinnDixie went to the doctor to address some symptoms that she had been having for a few months.
Thank goodness she finally sought medical attention because she needed a quadruple by-pass!

Last week she had the surgery and thankfully it was a success. She is now home recuperating and is finding that being a heart patient is not so easy.

She is very anxious to feel well enough to get back to the Forum. Hopefully she will be back to her jovial self very soon.

Jeanie, we continue to send healing thoughts and prayers your way for a speedy recovery!
I can't wait to see you at the lake next year. Real hugs are much better than cyber hugs!

This upcoming Thanksgiving gives many of us much to be thankful for! Cheers to good health, family and friends.

Be well my friend!

With love and a great big hug!

Having heart issues myself I feel for her. Hopefully the operation did the trick and she will be back amongst healthy again soon. Yes if you have symptoms of any kind go see a Doctor. I hate the hospital myself, but my heart is not something I can fix with the hand tools I have in my truck if you know what I mean... So well wishes and my prayers are going up for a speedy recovery.

So did they crack her ribs open and all?....'Cause I got some pretty good jokes to tell her right about now!

Default Get Well Thoughts and Wishes

So glad to know that WinnDixie is home and doing well. With her positive attitude and great sense of humor, I have no doubt that she will make a full recovery and be back to doing the things she enjoys very soon. I know she was forced to forgo baking a million pies for the Thanksgiving feast, but understand her daughter will be filling in for her on that task for this year. Next year she will no doubt resume her leadership role in the pie brigade.

I have never had a serious illness or any surgery of that magnitude, but have friends and family who have. They tell me the experience can be likened to being raised from the dead, when they emerged from surgery and realized they were still on this side of the great beyond. It seemed to have given them an entirely new perspective on life. It was amazing how quickly they recovered, as each day brought renewed strength and improvement. It wasn’t long before they were out and about again and back to their normal routines.

Wishing WinnDixie and all her family a wonderful Thanksgiving and get well soon.

WinnDixie - All the best to you for a complete and quick recovery.
The best part is that you avoided the heart attack and the damage that comes with it.

Default Best Wishes...

WinnDixie

Here are your own words from the FF 7 thread.

Cake dreams

"Thanks for identifying those in attendance...very nice to put the faces with the names. A special thanks from me (now that I know who she is) to Mrs. Hermit Cover!! I loved that cake; it looked so good! I would have cut a piece with chocolate, and--as I watched--along came Mrs. Hermit Cover. She looked it over for a minute, and I was saying "Come on! You ARE going to have chocolate, aren't you??" She was standing closer to the vanilla half, but--YES!!--she reached a little bit and cut herself a piece from the chocolate side! I had a virtual bite right along with her!!"

Keep that sense of humor and getting better will be a piece of cake!

Default Thanks to everyone!

Yup! I am home and doing quite well, really. This is one week after the surgery and I'm getting around pretty well. As some of you know, for sure, that CABG (Cardiac Artery Bypass with Grafting) "adventure" is quite the ride! Oh yeah, Lakesrider, I had the chest crack! I could probably even laugh at your jokes by now...and--remember when I sternly lectured YOU about going to the Dr.--right now! And then I just kept "paddling down DeNial", myself!! Well, God blessed me just the same! I am still here. But ALL of you listen to Lakesrider's words. It will literally save your life. Thanks, again, for all your great support. The Forum is very special to me...and I want to wish all of you a Happy Thanksgiving. Love you all...back soon!

Default Great Progress!

Good to have you back from the brink, WinnDixie. Remembering where you were only one week ago today, I would say you are making remarkable strides in your journey back to health. Leave it to you to find the humor even in difficult circumstances. I think a sense of humor lightens the spirit and gets us through the hard times of life. Keep on keeping on!

Default Thanks to all!

I went to the heart surgeon today, and he is well pleased...thinks in another two weeks he'll turn me back over to the cardiologist. I'm doing quite well, except for FREEZING! It went from the 70's to the high 20's here right after Thanksgiving. I am on two blood thinners (as we go into winter--my timing is always so impeccable!)...so I'm hoping for a warm-up...soon! But, truly, I am really, really blessed! I count this Forum among my blessings, too! Thanks again!

Glad to hear that you are doing so well!

The temperature being in the high 20's for your area is a little below the average for this time of year.

Default Warmth!

I should have specified that the high 20's was the low of the day...this house doesn't do as well as a New England one when it's that chilly and windy...BUT..up in the 50's today, so I'm warmer! Also moving faster!

Lakesrider, that video is great!! Thanks again, all!!

Arrow Lastest on WinnDixie

I got an e-mail yesterday letting me know that Jeannie has suffered a "significant stroke" Friday night as in in the neurological ICU. She has lost the ability to speak and cannot move her right arm or leg. The doctors say it is too early to know the long term ramifications, and say the next 3 to 5 days are critical.

I'll keep you posted as I get updates. So far, there is nothing new to report since yesterday.

Please send lots of healing thoughts and prayers. Our friend really needs them!

I add my prayers and best wishes to WinnDixie, as well as to her husband and family. I pray that they will be given the strength to get through this terrible nightmare. It is so hard to believe this turn of events, as she had been making such good progress in recovering from the surgery. She is a dear and caring person – honest and generous to the core. May she recover from this set back and join us again soon. She enjoys this forum so much and has been a wonderful contributor – her posts always being in good taste and mindful of others’ views and opinions.

God bless you, WinnDixie. We miss you and pray for your return to good health soon.

Unhappy Not Much News Yet

Today's e-mail:
We are pretty much in the wait and see phase of this thing. To call it maddening would be to understate it vastly!!! We are waiting for the doctors to be able to make some predictions, at least about the near future. At this point we take as good signs the fact that she hasn't had to be placed on a respirator and the fact that she has remained responsive and able to follow commands. I think we are in for a very long journey.
I thought you might like to put a face to the name.
May I present Mr & Mrs WinnDixie:

From their visit to Rattlesnake Island on June 5th.

Be strong Jeanie... we know you can do it! Love you, Cel

How is she doing this week? Tell her we are still thinking about her and hope she is still fighting for a good come back.

Tell her I finally got a picture of an Owl in the wild. Took me six years to do it.....

Default Jeanie

I'm extremely sorry to report that there really isn't any new or good news. They are trying to get her moved to a skilled nursing facility. Haven't had an update for a few days now. Jeanie is still unable to use the right side of her body - a real nightmare for a physically and emotionally active woman. Not being able to converse must be pure hell for her too. Her outlook isn't good, but this is the season of miracles and Jeanie is a fighter. If I hear anything more, I'll be sure to pass along the info. I know that Jeanie truly appreciates the healing thoughts and well wishes. Thank you.

Lakesrider, I will pass your message along. I know it will please her that you finally snapped a shot of a wild owl.

Dear Santa,

For my Christmas present this year, I would like good health returned to Jeanie...aka..Winn Dixie.

Don't you wish it was that easy...just to ask Santa for something and next thing you know ...it is there! Wouldn't that be nice!

Jeanie....I am wishing, hoping and more importantly praying for your good health. I miss not hearing from you. Get well soon.

Arrow I'm Making a Winnipesaukee.com Card for Jeanie

Winnipesaukee.com has been such an important part of Jeanie's life over the past many years. Remember how she stayed in front of the computer and watched all of ForumFest back in August and chatted with a couple of us via cell phone during the event? I would like to make her a card with your help that contains wishes from her friends here on the Forum to let her see how much we are thinking of her. I am thinking of putting the Winnipesaukee.com logo on the front along with some thumbnail pictures around it from PhotoPost. On the inside I would like to put your avatar with your message. There is no rush to get this done. I want to be sure to get lots of well wishes, so my target deadline will be January 5th.

Thanks for your help! I know this will cheer her up immensely.

RG...

Since no recent postings from you, I assume you have no new news.

For the Get Well card....do we PM you wish our wishes! Or just post them here? Let us know....

Thanks so much.

Allie,
Celia asked me to let you know that either PM or posting here is fine.

Regrettably, no significant changes to report.

Please keep our forum family member and friend WinnDixie in your prayers.

Default Get Well Soon

WinnDixie,

I will always have special memories of the fun times and mutual interests we shared, ranging from genealogy to spring peepers. The theater tour and Sawyer runs were a treat - not forgetting your fondness for peppermint stick ice cream (with Jimmies, of course). You continue to be in my thoughts and I pray for your return to good health soon.

Miss you!

Winn Dixie....Jeanie....

We are friends, although we have never met face to face. We talk through words...paper...Winnie, FB and phone only. We talked of the day we both meet face to face. I look forward to the day when John & I meet you and Russ....and when we can swap "war stories". Your words to me were very comforting when I needed them and I hope mine are to you now. Please know, I think of you so very often...and each thought is one of recovery.

Love,
Allie

Smile Jeanie's Condition

I spoke to Jeanie's husband, Russ today. It is with a somewhat lighter heart I can post that she is making progress in the right direction.

She was able to swallow four out of five spoons of water. Hopefully this ability will continue to improve.

When two people are in the room, she watches the person who is talking and is now alert enough to watch some television. She also has been able to sit in a chair, with support.

Jeanie is doing well with her physical therapy. Her left arm movement ability is great and her left leg is quite good. The very affected right arm is beginning to respond to the electric (electronic???) therapy with contractions in the muscles. Her right leg is slower to respond, which the therapist says is normal.

It is encouraging that Jeanie was able to pass Russ' hat to him from one side of the bed to the other. What a difference a few weeks makes! Hopefully, these small victories will lead to bigger ones. When Russ asked if she would like him to arrange for her hair to be done, she gave a quick thumbs up.

The road she travels continues to be long and arduous, but if anyone can do it, it's our friend Jeanie. Thanks for your healing thoughts and prayers. Her Winnipesaukee.com card should be going out tomorrow. Sorry for the delay. You all mean so much to her and she is going to love it.

Talking WinnDixie's Gigantic Get Well Card

WinnDixie's great big get well wish from her friends at Winnipesaukee.com finally went out. It is about 32" wide and 18" tall. The mail guy was impressed.

Bailey's Bubble thought it was a photo opportunity as I was trying to get a shot of the card upright.
It made me smile and helped me to forget for a moment that my dear friend is in such a predicament.

Get well wishes posted before her stroke were included. Some of the wording did get changed just a tad to fit the situation. Also included were Allie's Christmas Wish along with Eillac, Chickie and Lakesrider's multiple posts. Chickie, I just had to include a shot of Sawyer's sign on your get well wish. And how could I not include Lakesrider's fantastic wild owl picture?! The other photos included were of places that I knew especially touched their lives. Rattlesnake Island, where Russ used to fish with a pal, as well as our wonderful visit with them in 2010. Allen A, where she worked and where they got married. Belknap Point Motel, where they loved to stay when they visited, an aerial shot of Laconia because they spent about 40 of their 52 years of their marriage, and the 2010 ForumFest group shot. She may not have been there in person, but she didn't miss a moment! I'm so glad we were live. I had to throw in a picture of that incredible cake too.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes. I think Jeanie and Russ will enjoy it.

Default Card for WinnDixie

The card is beautiful, RG! What a fantastic job - a true labor of love. I hope Jeanie will be able to understand and enjoy all the loving thoughts and prayers that go with it, and may it bring a smile or two to Russ and the family, as well. Did you send along the photo of Bailey's Bubble sitting in front of it? As they are both dog lovers, seeing that cute little face would brighten any day. Thank you for including the Sawyer's sign, as I know it will bring back fond memories.

Bless you for putting it all together, RG - I'm sure it will be appreciated.

Thanks Chickie, I'm so glad you like it. I also hope she can understand and enjoy it too. I mailed the card before being able to put in the picture of Bailey, but I have another card of the dogs that I am hoping to do for next week. They are blank, 15 second recordable photo cards that I hope will work well. Now if I can just get them to bark and sing on command. She was sure that overlapping dogs was a great idea and as it turns out she was absolutely right!!!

Talking She's Making Progress!

I spoke to Russ a little while ago. Jeanie is making more progress and is definitely very aware of everything going on around her. And there is nothing wrong with her memory. (I'm so relieved!) He is absolutely sure that she is going to completely enjoy her get well card! Wish I could have delivered it in person.

Jeanie is able to sit in her chair and watch television for periods of up to four hours, without having to rest her head back.

Recently, Russ brought in a map, which had the northeast area of the country.
He asked her where Winnipesaukee was. She put her finger right on it.
He then asked where Lake Ontario would be and she picked it out without difficulty too.

He is quite sure that she can read, but may not be quite ready to sit and read a book.

Recently she was able to completely take five spoon of water, along with five spoons of crushed ice, without any difficulties.

She has not yet had her hair done because she is receiving very low levels of oxygen and the doctors would like that chore to wait.
The meter can output up to level 30 and she is receiving only 1 1/2.
Her oxygen level is about 88 and needs to be over 90 to be free of it.
Once the oxygen is gone, she will be allowed this nice treat.

Molly gets to visit Jeanie on Sunday mornings. She gets to hop up on the bed to greet Jeanie, who really seems to enjoy patting her very much.

Recently she was asked if she might like to have her I-Pod and she gave a quick finger response of yes! Russ says she is the only 73 year-old in the facility with this high tech device. Currently it is on a docking station with speakers and when asked if she might like the ear buds... it was a big yes.

A friend that was visiting asked if she would like her fingernails trimmed. Jeanie gave the finger yes and the friend proceeded trimming and applying nail polish. When Russ arrived later that day, he was shocked at the color as it was not something she would have ever chosen for herself. Surprised, he said out loud with the therapist present, I wonder who did that? The therapist told him that she knew who did it for her, because Jeanie spelled it out on her letter board with her finger. Russ asked if she would like their daughter to bring stuff to change the color and further trim the nails... she responded with a quick finger yes!

She sure has come a long way since the beginning of December and I pray the trend continues. She is at a great facility and has the excellent support and care of her wonderful family. (I hope their NH daughter is signed up for frequent flyer miles! )

Jeanie and Russ both greatly appreciate the get well wishes from their Forum fiends. I know from experience that this kind of support truly helps.
Thank you - you're the best.

I should have taken better care to snap clearer pictures. I really needed to get it into the envelope and sealed up or I would have been "fixing it" forever!
Most of the wording can be viewed in above posts if they are not legible.
(Only the get well wishes that Jeanie had seen before the stroke were altered to fit the situation.)
I do have each saved in a Word document if you still cannot read them.

Here are most of the little pictures that filled in vacant spots.

Default Wow!

I can't believe I have missed this thread. I read it originally when WD had posted, but had not checked back in...I feel terrible.

I hope her recovery continues and that she is better soon!

Great job RG for putting together that beautiful and very thoughtful card.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes. I think Jeanie and Russ will enjoy it.
I haven't read this thread for awhile, but thank you for the update on Jeanie's status. Has anyone told you lately how awesome you are in keeping in touch with people, reporting on them, and keeping the calendar updated? You are just as important a part of winni.com as our beloved Don is. Thank you again, for all you do.

God Bless!

I figured it would show up in new posts often enough, that I wouldn't need to start a new thread. Should this thread keep going or is it time for a new one???

I'm sorry you missed our first card Chip. Not to worry, any get well wishes will be passed along to Jeanie. I promise! I know she will look forward to receiving them. If anyone has a particular photo that you might like to share with her, I'd be happy to send that too.

SIKSUKR, of course you deserve to be part of Jeanie's get well card!

I will also pass along all of your responses for her to see too. She is going to love that.

Default Let's start a group prayer where..............

Every night just before we go to bed we all say one prayer to the Lord Above or to the Power of Nature or to anyone or anything that we feel may help with healing Winn Dixie. Maybe we will be heard and she will improve and be happy in summer. Knowing that we do not know the plan for any of us, but trusting that there is one and in the end we all may live happily in God's plan.

Talking Jeanie's Get Well Card

Jeanie and Russ really enjoyed our card! He read all the get-well wishes to her and then set it up on her bed and asked her to point to different things on it. She was able to this without hesitation and no trouble at all. Jeanie holds the card open on her lap and looks at it very intently for long periods of time. Thank you everyone for making our friend happy.

A message from Russ for all of us:

“The entire family wants to thank the Forum members who sent you the get well messages and we particularly want to thank you for the fantastic card that you fashioned. We can say with absolute certainty that Jeanie is thrilled to have received such an outpouring of love. Russ”

Talking Really Good News!!!

I received some really great news!!!!!

Jeanie has made significant progress in the past four or five 5 days.

It started last weekend with printing her name on a white board. At first she had trouble with the A, but since Sunday she has not failed to print it correctly. She now prints Russ's name correctly every time.

Wednesday, the speech therapist reported that she was trying to talk and that she was certain that she had identified many of the words and they were in context.

Thursday, she began talking to both her daughters and Russ. The voice is in a whisper, but the majority of the words are discernible and are all in context.

To add a frosting to this beautiful cake, Friday morning she was able to eat apple sauce from a spoon. That is a big improvement over water and ice chips!

A new swallowing test has been scheduled for the 23rd and everyone is hoping that she can get rid of the feeding tube. Even if the doctors insist on keeping the tube for a while longer, it is likely that some foods will be permitted.

These developments are very encouraging! Russ tells me that it is obvious that Jeanie is very aware that she is on the right path and her demeanor has brightened considerably with the recent progress she has made.

Tears of happiness are running down my face. I'm so thrilled for our friend.

Talking Making Progress

Jeanie seems to be making progress with each day. Working especially hard on getting her vocal cords stronger.

Her son in-law is working on setting up one of his retired laptops, so he can bring it in for Jeanie. He is hoping that she may be able to type. Russ is looking forward to logging onto Winnipesaukee.com, so that Jeanie can see the well wishes for herself.

Keep up the wonderful progress Jeanie - you've come a long way baby!!!! I am so happy and incredibly proud of you and how far you've come. Can't wait to have you back where you belong.

Love,

Cel

Default Don't forget the prayers for Jeanie!

Each night mention Jeanie in your prayers. If you don't say prayers then it is never too late to start. I hope Jeanie is going to get stronger and stronger. My daughter put "Jeanie... recovering from stroke" on the prayer list that her church keeps going. I am not even all that religious but do think that prayer cannot harm, and know for sure that some of my own prayers have been answered.

Talking The Latest

Happily Jeanie continues to make wonderful progress! Her vocal cords are getting stronger. She is able to speak in paragraphs now with more volume.

Her swallowing test on February 23rd went very well. She is eating and has been able to give up the mid-day liquid nutrition. I expect before long, she will be completely off this.

She is enjoying back issues of the Citizen. Reading without difficulty and with complete comprehension.

Recently the physical therapist bent her right leg, which is the affected side, and asked Jeanie to push. She did and was able to put her leg out straight. Great progress.

Jeanie is better in the morning when she is fresh and gets pretty tired by the afternoon after all her therapies. Russ tells me that this does frustrate her a bit, especially because it affects her speech a little.

The computer hasn't happened yet, but hopefully it will be set up for her soon.

Our Winn-Dixie is one very special and very determined lady. I bet the doctors at the hospital where she was first brought would be completely amazed with her recovery. I know that I am!

Thank you very much for your continued support, healing thoughts and prayers. They mean so much to her.

That's a great idea... we have one and it's a wonderful computer. Our youngest boy has autism and it's been a great tool for him to work with and for us to work with him. It's very intuitive - I think it would be great for WinnDixie.

I smell a fundraiser in the making here... maybe a mini-forum fest?

A new iPad goes for $479 (I can get an educators' discount) - we can surly raise that much in an afternoon or evening...

I take back my earlier quote of $479...

Apple just released the iPad2 today.

The first version goes for $349 (refurbished) - and has the same warantee as the new ones...

---

Island Girl - thanks for the offer - hang tight and see what others think of this. I'd be happy to help but I want to be considerate of others' thoughts and feelings on this.... This can be a very dynamic and creative group when we make these sorts of plans...

Default iPad - Great Idea

Jeanie's progress recently is beyond belief and just so amazing. I think having a computer would be good therapy for her and would probably help with eye-hand coordination as she continues on the road to recovery. If you decide on purchasing an iPad for her, I definitely want to contribute.
