Looks like the surface water temp from the Winni Marine web cam has gone up a degree from 37 to 38 degrees in the last two days. During the months of January, February, and March when the lake is solid ice it can take two months for the surface water to go up by one degree. But now with all the ice gone, the open water gets warmed up by yesterday's sunshine and goes up one degree in a fast two day's time.

Default Glendale / Smith Cove

As of this morning Glendale is wide open!! Smith cove still somewhat locked in. The East shoreline of the cove is somewhat open and passable, the Fay's side is not, probably be another day or two before boats can get out of Fays...

I talked to Dave this morning, he said that Center Harbor still is quite thick, he is thinking it could be another 7-10 days for official ice out.

For me, once Gilford Yacht Club and Smith Cove are clear its ice-out for me!

I left from Y-Landing, and cut through the ice on the southwest side of Pine. There is still significant ice between the Neck and the west side of Bear, but hopefully with some rain and wind it will break up fast!

Default Smith Cove

For those at Fays, Smith Cove was still mostly iced in this morning. The ice has shifted making the Eastern shoreline (opposite Fays) un-passable, it will probably be passable late this afternoon but I don't see Fays passable for another day or two...

Did you notice if Gilford Yacht Club is clear yet? I haven't been north of our place since Sunday evening. Boats are ready for launch.

Alton Bay looked largely unchanged this morning. Still ice from Loon Cove/ 11-D headed south to about 100' north of the bandstand.

It wasn't yesterday morning but I didn't look close this morning. I will check for you and report back.

Default Lily Pond

....and Lily Pond still has ice!!! Went by at 7:00 AM this morning and it still 60% covered with ice! With today's expected wind it could be gone by late this afternoon or tomorrow...This will be the first time that we will be on the island with Lily Pond still frozen...Weird year for sure!

Finally looking like some changes on the Center Harbor and Smith Cove cams. This wind today should do a number on what's left in Alton Bay.

Still hoping to launch this weekend, but not sure about Smith Cove having a clear path to GYC.

Big change since 9am, Alton Bay is clear all the way down. The last remnants of slush are pushed up against the eastern shore just up from Downings. That will be gone today.

We were at Fay's at about 2 PM today. The strong west wind has pushed the Smith Cove ice sheet to the narrow east end of the cove so that the ice met shore on both sides. Driving up Varney Point Road and looking down, we did not notice and breaks in the ice sheet. While the wind might break it up and blow it out today, that looks doubtful for today.

The Eastern has been winterized and is ready to go, thanks Jeff. But I would say we have less than 10% chance of getting out of the cove tomorrow.

Just drove by Center Harbor again, looks about 90 % clear now. Just ice at the inlet being pushed by the wind.

Gilford Yacht Club is clear but Smith Cove is still impassable. I drove over to the Varney Point side to see if there was a channel along shore but the ice was right up to the docks.

Default Smith Cove

As of 8 AM today Smith Cove was still closed to exit or entrance. The ice sheet is still at the docks on both sides.

That's why Ice out is meaningless. If you were trying to launch at 19 mi Bay or libby museum today you couldn't get anywhere.

It’s not meaningless because it has a definition. 19 Mile Bay isn’t part of it.

I managed to launch one boat tonight. The ice in Smith Cove is just soft slush, glided right through. Dead battery or something else going on with the eastern so that one will have to wait until tomorrow.

Nice...did you get out to the house or just launch the boat?

Just a quick launch. My dock isn’t in yet.

I know what I have to do to put the docks in and start the season but I hadn't really given islands and docks much thought until the above post.

What do you tough island people do, especially the first ones, when there are no docks in? Please say that you anchor and swim in. That would be impressive!

We have a large seasonal dock, the longest finger is 75’ long and in 2 pieces. Another 18’ section branches off and another finger bolts to that. Although aluminum, it’s huge and heavy so I leave it to the professionals. Farley does my install and removal since he built it, and I am usually one of his first installs of the season (and last removals). It’s a 3-4 person job. Luckily my neighbor had a 24’ wooden post dock that he can install himself in an hour. Last year we got his in first and I used it until mine went on. Mine is either going in this week or next.

I do miss my permanent crib dock for this reason, but we are very shallow and fully exposed to the east. Permanent docks on our side don’t last long.

Before we got our permanent crib dock put in, we used to tie up to the old mail dock next door....sorry to disappoint!

Tilton BB: There are many islanders with permanent docks. You just don't see posts from us about installing and removing docks.

Last couple years I pulled the boat partially on the beach and tied it off. If it’s rough it’s a bit hairy until the dock and mooring are in. This year I’m waiting, sadly, for another couple weeks to open at which point the water will be balmy!

Default Dis dat Big Squam Lake, Holderness NH

Big Squam Lake, Holderness, as seen from Route 25 while driving; Tuesday, April 11 at noon: entire Squam Lake water area was ice covered with gray ice.

Seven hours late at 7-pm: entire Squam Lake water area was all open water with NO ice.

April 11, Squam Lake ice: now you see it, and now you don't!

Here's an Asquamie question for you: Dis dat Squam ice melt into the lake water, or dis dat Squam ice desiccate up into the air? ....... where-o-where did it dis dat go? ....
