A week go we were staining my deck framing outside in 50 degree weather while looking at open water, now it looks like the arctic tundra.

Yes it is. It rarely freezes entirely anymore. All that ice you can see in the photo formed in the past week. The lake has been wide open all winter so far. Only the small coves had some ice at times…

So you are the culprit, you can't think like that it leads to a late freeze everytime!!!!!!!!!!!

I think we will still be on the island in March Steve...All that ice in the broads is so thin one warm or windy day will blow it away. Glendale will be the last to go at least for those of us in Gilford...

Keep the faith!

Even with all this recent white stuff the lake is beginning to open up. Along the shore it’s just sludge. More snow today and 6-8 tomorrow. As our forefathers said “March comes in like a lion goes out like a lamb”

Default Any Ice Updates/Photos?

Has anyone driven by or have a lakeside camera to show recent ice conditions? Just curious how it is looking these days with the more moderate temperatures.

Here’s a pic from my security cam on the south side of the lake by Ellacoya State Park looking at Welch Island….everything is still iced in.

The ice is Very Very thin here so it won’t take long to go…

Someone was brave (or stupid) enough to set up a shack just northeast of Diamond Island yesterday. It was still there this morning when I left. Dan got a pretty good pic of it on his camera.

Here’s a drone video I just made just for you! Feel free to scroll through it as it’s 4 minutes long and basically just turning left and right showing the entire lake. For logistics, the drone was basically directly above Ellacoya State Park 500 meters up looking North…. Make sure to put your YouTube settings on the highest definition possible…

Yes it has a 1 1/2 mile range and I have used it to go to my camp from the mainland!

Default Warm Weather

Todays warm weather has started cracking the ice in the broads at least between Belknap Point / Ellacoya and Welch. Should start seeing some open water in the next few days I would guess…

Default Winnisquam Open Water

The ice was locked in out front on Sunday morning when I left the area.

Same view from the web cams this morning around 8:00 AM. When I checked around 3:00 today, ice all gone from the main body of the lake, Sanbornton to Laconia. Still a chunk of ice between the sandbar and halfway up to smith point, gone tomorrow, for sure!

During my 60+ years on the lake, this was the first winter that I could not go out on the ice out front!

There were a few winters with 3-4 inches of ice along the shoreline, center still open, and we still safely fished during the derby.

When my dad taught me how to ice fish in the late 60's we chopped through 24" of ice with an ice chisel, the deeper you go the smaller the hole!

Default Winnisquam

After today's warm weather and tomorrows rain, I wouldn't doubt if Winnisquam is mostly ice free by Friday...We shall see!

Default North End

The north end of Winnisquam is still pretty iced in. No more bob houses but you can still see snow mobile tracks. Counting on the rain to do some good damage and get to ice out though.

Yes, still lots of ice north of the state park. And with the current weekly forecast should be there for a week or two more

Not funny....

On a serious note I figured it would be gone by now the way things were looking in mid February. We were looking out at plenty of blue water on February 18th. Here we are just over a month later and things are still locked in pretty well. Lily Pond was still covered yesterday, and I am still seeing brave (or crazy) souls walking around on Alton Bay and off Ames Farm.

my normal ice out predictor is Wheelwright Pond in Lee....usually goes out a week before Winni. This morning I saw a lot of open water...maybe another couple of days I'm thinking.

Happy belated birthday CampEye!! Here ya go…. It was really windy so I couldn’t go out far. This drone video is taken and starts approximately 500 yards west of Ellacoya State Park looking due North, by the end of the video the drone is 500 meters high…

Hope your birthday was a good one!!

The band of open water from Belknap Point Rd out to Welch is pretty large. It starts north of Broadview and south almost to Ellacoya.

Dan could probably kayak to his house.

From the east side of Welch it’s open across to Long Island.

Taken from the deck:

We walked Scenic Rd about 2 PM and there was only modest opening. However close examination showed lots of ice sheets starting to move and overlap. Not surprised that a bit of wind had an effect.

Tomorrow's forecast: 44 deg with strong westerly wind. Then in the mid 40's Mon-Wed with strong NW wind Thursday. A lot will happen.

Glendale and Smith Cove are still lo locked up. Within a few days you could launch at Ames Farm and make it out.

Default Lilly Pond

What’s funny is Lilly Pond is still locked in tight except for a tiny bit of melting on the southern shore. I think all “indicators are out the window this year!

I was going to mention the same. Picked up one of the boats tonight. Drove through and noted the same. It’s down to Diamond now, and south of that is getting darker. Alton still isn’t out to the bandstand.

It seems like the wind kept the lake from freezing early.

Lilly Pond was already frozen and stayed that way.

Photos today from Scenic Rd near Ellacoya and from Belknap Point. Solid ice to the north plus in Glandale Bay and Smith Cove although starting to darken. Today's sun and tomorrow's wind should make some change.

Thanks to the three Musketeers who travel that section of Rt 11 and stop for pix. I'm still good with Lily Pond as my indicator. How about Crystral Lake as a 10 day precursor? Is it clear yet?

Lots of movement and ice loss with gusts to 35mph overnight. White caps are driving ice back at Rattlesnake. Expecting it to look completely different out front when I get home tonight. Here are this mornings pics, plus a yesterday vs today from Bear. Pics fixed!

At 10:30 am open from FL26 out to south side of Round and on east. When I went by on Rt 11 at 8:30 am there was still a large ice sheet just below Round but an open break. That ice sheet is part way to Wolfeboro Bay now. The wind she is at work, more ice to go.
Glendale still solid ice but you can now see open water in the distance.

As others have noted, things seem to be happening backward this year. Driving around Manchester and Concord yesterday, noted that many of the smaller water bodies are still frozen. Merrymeeting is still almost completely frozen (usually starts before Winni). I think Winni is more open because it never fully froze.

You mean Million Dollar Island? I heard that's what the new owners said it should now be called. (New meaning several years ago-time flies)

It was purchased in 2012 for $1,247,000 so I guess that "more than a million island" would now be correct.

It used to use a generator for electricity but the new owners ran electric service out from the mainland and did a lot of other work to update the property.

The buyers, and current owners, also have a very nice waterfront home in Wolfeboro. They owned J Jill, the clothing company.

I believe the former owner (before 2012) also owned the Cask n' Flagon at Fenway Park. Sometime, about 1993, I noticed about 10 young people on the Center Harbor docks with sleeping bags and knapsacks. They were waiting for boat to pick them up. They said they worked at the Cask N; Flagon and the owner was having an outing at his island, Dollar island. They all climbed into my boat and I gave them a ride out to the island. To thank me, they promised me a free drink at the bar in Boston, which I now remember I never collected. Maybe I should call and see if they would send me the money?

Yes, yes and yes. They bought the mainland house that used to be owned by Jimmy Fallons in-laws. You might have waited too long to collect on that drink. Those kids would all be gone.

Great info, thank you. I stare out at it every day but didn't know who owned it. It sits vacant a lot during the season.

Glendale at 8 am today. "Maybe" a launch will be possible tomorrow closely following shore to get out. However the risk will be the ice then closing back in, that happened to us once. Of course there are some willing to risk that for the 1st day of salmon season.

I can share a disappointingly large block of ice sitting between Camp, Mink, Mark, Bear and Jolly. Photo is looking WNW from Camp. On left is Mink, Mark in middle, Bear on right.

Codeman needs to direct some of his hot tub water toward me!

I was hoping to get out tomorrow for opening day but between the dangerous ice flows and heavy rain predicted I won’t be attempting it….Sunday not looking good either with the 20-30 mph expected winds!! Looks like Monday it is!!

Default First Boat Sighted

I saw the first fishing boat / canoe go by this morning! They must have launched at Ellacoya. Absolute miserable day to be out there especially in a canoe! More power to them!

Glendale is more closed in that it was yesterday. We did see a truck pulling a trailer with a small green boat leaving Ellacoya this morning.

You know the April 1st Winni Marine, Weirs Channel, weather cam says the water temp is 37-degrees. The coldest the surface water ever gets is 33.8 on about January 31 to February 1.

So, how long can the ice last with the surface water temp at 37-degrees?

Here's another question. Does the ice melt into the lake water or does it desiccate similar to ice and snow on the land which vaporizes into the air powered by sunshine?

Default Glendale & Smith Cove

Well I was hoping to get my boat in the water this morning but as you can see that is not happening today. Pics were taken at 10:00 AM this morning….

With the winds whipping at 35 mph gusts, a lot of ice will be moving and gone today….I hope!

Just spun down to check out Glendale. Probably going to be an end of the week launch at this point for me. Still plenty of ice in Smith Cove and the marina.

Everything blew out around Rattlesnake overnight. Still ice in all ports except for the Weirs, it’s going to be a bit…

Last freezing night in the ten day forecast is Sunday. Thursday is forecast to get near 70F with a bit of a breeze to stir things up. Hopefully won't be long.

We looked at Glendale at 1 pm today, the SW airflow had moved the ice away a bit. Dave Farley had launched his boat and got out, probably with a lot of ice contact.

Smith cove is mostly ice but starting to open a bit. Our Eastern is 3rd from the end of covered slips at Fay's. The 1st two have splashed. Ours is next. Now just need an ice breaker in Smith Cove.

Saw two boats launching this morning in Moultonborough on the Harilla Landing webcam. Looks like clear water out to some of the islands (Little Bear, Cow, Ragged).

I had to do that from the " gas dock " at Gilford Yacht Club years ago in the pontoon...was noisy as hell, but we made it!

Default Glendale

Just came from Glendale and it’s launch-able unless the wind moves more ice in. I was very tempted to drop the boat in but figured I’ll wait one more day…The island will still be there!

Alton Bay is still locked in from the mouth of the bay all the way to the bandstand.

Went by Lake Wentworth and that is completely locked in still.

Lilly Pond is still locked in… I think ice out will be declared on Winni and Lilly Pond will still have ice!

What a weird year for sure!

Dan

PIG, I assume you launched out of Sheps/Goodhue? You mentioned ice....is there just a little ice around or is most of the west side of Bear still iced in?

The west side, Bear Island, water is mostly ice free down the center while the shorelines have weak gray ice that will fast disappear back to water.

Check out the Bear Island cam shot that looks to the south.
