Best fishing spots

The ice is out and the fish are jumping. So that asks the question, where are the best fishing spots in Gilford, Gilmanton, and Alton? What are the top five? For what fish?

Let me know.....

Do people really divulge their best fishing spots? Growing up, fishing was a competitive sport between my family members and no one ever divulged their secret spots.

As many of you know, Bizer has a reward if boaters find a shallow spot not marked in blue on Bizer's chart. A few weeks ago, I received an email which stated, in part, "I know of a place not marked by buoy ... However, I'm a bit reluctant to give it to you, as it is such a good secret fishing spot to take my grandchildren!" He never did disclose the spot.

If not specific spots, what bodies of water in the area are best for fishing? What type of fish?

You need to change your username. Telling one person is one thing...putting it on public forums even more unlikely...But telling a reporter for the paper with a huge circulation will never happen.

My Christian beliefs have prevailed and I'd like to help. Winni is actually a very poor spot for fishing. Send your readers to another lake and save them some time. I hear they jump in the boat on Squam and you don't even need bait on the hook over at Winnisquam.

Try the area between Shep Brown's and Bear Island! Let out 2-3 colors or weighted line and use an orange lure.

I Don't know about the others who fish the big lake, but when I go I usually start by putting the lure or bait in the water.

actually, a really good spot on the big lake is the very top of the falls at Mills Falls. The Salmon make their run Inn the late Spring but you have to cast to the very top of the falls where they all congregate and rest for their next part of the journey.

Watch out for the elusive brown trout known to inhabit Braun Bay in the summer months...They have quite the bite...

I would suggest fishing for cusk during July and August by dropping a dead minnow down to about 90 feet in the deepest holes you can locate on your chart. Great action and good eatin'.

IMHO, a live snail darter would be the best bait for this situation.

I've never had any luck fishing live snail darters. Do you fish them above or below the blue thermocline?

If you use them above the blue thermocline you need to stun them first, I find a cheap beer like Pabst works best.

When looking for a good spot, think structure. And there's no lack of it in the Lake, so just about any spot is a good one.
