Default Bear Raids Laconia Kitchen

From WMUR web site:

Quote:
LACONIA, N.H. -- A New Hampshire mother said her two young sons learned an important lesson about leaving the outside door open after a black bear walked into their kitchen and ate two pears and a bunch of grapes and took a drink from the family fishbowl.

On its way out of the Laconia house, the real bear grabbed a stuffed bear, said resident Mary Beth Parkinson.

Parkinson said she thinks the garage door going up scared the bear out of her kitchen Tuesday. She said the bear apparently took advantage of the open outside door. She said she arrived in time to save the fish.

Parkinson said her 6- and 9-year-old boys made sure the doors were locked before they went to bed.

Today's www.citizen.com has a report from Route 93-Ashland NH, where a black beer was struck in the Route 93 roadway, and it caused a three car accident including a roll-over.

About two months ago, I saw a large moose trot down Rt 93 southbound, late afternoon, for about 100 yards between exits 27 & 26, in the Campton area.

If it please the Court—For the Defense:

This WMUR account includes the word "apparently", which suggests that nobody actually witnessed the activities of this "perp". For all we know, this could have been a "troubled youth", who was just getting his life together.

Offenses are mounting:

Charge 1) Theft of property under $1000. (Petit-Larceny).

Charge 2) Harrassment of Wildlife (the fish).

Charge 2) Kidnapping! (Perception is Reality)

Mitigating circumstances:

1) "Walking" into somebody's house through an open door isn't illegal.
(Not so sure about "ambling"—a problem). ::

2) Both the placement of the stuffed bear and food left out in the open could be viewed as "entrapment", heretofore Unconstitutional.

3) Also, it's not illegal to drink from an aquarium.

4) Not consuming the fish rules out the average bear.

Not Guilty!

Like anything else, even a story like this can get twisted around to turn it into a joke.

I glad to see that at least one media outlet got this story right... left? Oh, who knows! Turns out it was a rescue mission!

Gotta love Treehugger.com

I believe it may have been this bear I almost had a very close encounter with this morning driving to work.

Coming down Parade Road from Meredith Center Road/Elm St, just as I passed the stormwater improvement site (just before the Community Gardens) a bear suddenly burst from the bushes on the lake side of the road running full speed across the road. I swerved into the breakdown lane and avoided hitting him by one or two feet. By the time I regained control of the car, I was past him, and just caught a glimspe of him going into the trees on the State School side of the road.

This is about a mile north of the incident where the bear went into the house, so if its not the same bear, it's probably the brother/sister/cousin of that bear.

Who are you kidding? The family will get a fine from NH Fish & Game for feeding wild animals.
