Default Windy Night Ice Melt

Crazy windy in southern NH last night—how was it at the lake?

Also, does wind help thaw ice or just prevent it from forming? Early ice out this year?!

High gusting winds and an inch of snow still being blown around in Moultonborough, but with the temperature currently at 3 degrees the ice presumably is only getting thicker.

It helps break it up if there are open spots.

Currently, the only open spots in the ice near me are from bubblers on docks, and the wind has had no visible impact. If anything, the bubbler openings have been shrunk by the low temperatures. I do agree that wind can be a very big factor in breaking up ice, we saw it in December and January as ice-in was delayed because winds broke up ice where there was adjacent open water.
