Default Small Craft Advisory?

Any thoughts/experience with the NWS Small Craft Advisories often posted on The Weather Channel? They have been posted numerous times over the past month for Melvin Bay, today's for example warned of gusts up to 30 knots and "seas" of 5-10 feet. The normal weather report at the time was winds of 8 mph. Just judging by sight, the winds were below 8 mph.

I don't expect weather reports to be perfect, but I am struck by the almost impossible sounding warning of 10 foot seas in Melvin Bay, and also by the split between the advisory forecast and the regular forecast. I tend to err toward caution and heed the advisories, but I'd be interested in others' experiences.

Thanks

Your problem is using The Weather Channel as a source.
