Former French Restaurant in Gilford
There is an old building that I believe was a stage coach stop when originally built and most recently (probably 10 years ago) was a French restaurant. It has been abandoned for years but now the windows have been removed. Does anybody know it is being remolded or demolished?

Stagecoach Stops
Most if not all are destroyed or torn down in Gilford. The Former B. Mae Denny's was a former inn or boarding house as is the Victorian House near Lake Shore Park.

If you are talking about the former Victorian House restaurant at 2645 Lake Shore Road, next to the Mineral Springs Condominiums, the building is being torn down.
There are three buildings with 54 commercial storage units being built on the site. It has already been approved by the Gilford Planning Board. |

Again, that is very sad. We ate in that place quite a few times and enjoyed it. I was hoping it would become another restaurant. It's just a tough business.

Here's an old pic of the place when it was called "Stoddard Lodge"
In 1950 it was known as the Hampshire House

Gilford Restaraunts
This Stoddard House looks like the property where the Christmas Tree Inn was for several years.(Mid 1980's) Buzzy, Sue Carol, and Ted. were the owners. Great Place!

I am amazed at how much demand there is for storage units.

Yes and they are huge money makers! Hard to find a storage place in the area that isn’t full! Everyone hates them till you need one including me!

I believe the plan is to sell the individual units in condo fashion so they would be owned as opposed to rentals.
If you look at the proximity to Lakeshore Park and the location of many condos in the immediate area, I would think that there would be a substantial customer base for storage just in that area. |

I have heard from a very reliable source that Since the property abuts land owned by Lakeshore Park, the owners have bought the land.

The man that bought the restaurant building and the 3 plus acres that it sits on owns one house in Lakeshore Park that he and his wife spend their summers at. The rest of the year he lives at the seacoast. |

I bet that’s what my “very reliable source” was talking about—owner or owners of LSP!

And now back to the original question.
Former French Restaurant in Gilford.
I don't think the Victorian Inn was ever a French restaurant. Lyons Den was once Gretchen's which served French cuisine.

Victorian Resturant
What a shame. I had many memorable anniversary dinner dates there with Chief Thundercloud (sorry Elizabeth) and the food was absolutely sensational. At one point the rather robust hostess in charge told us that the cabins on the LH side of the property were going to be re-habbed and put back into service.
The place definitely had a storied past ala brothel. Many many excellent dinners there while the Victorian was in its prime. |

$10 Bought a Memory...

Back then, locals used an interesting expression when they arrived by automobile. Searching the Internet for a town I knew my Grand-Aunt had frequented, I came across a family postcard—and bought it off eBay. The key words were, "We came up by machine."
