Default A Word About Spam

In the past 24 hours this site filtered and blocked 3,382 spammer registrations. You read that right. One got through last night and this morning I woke up to 13 reported post and other emails reporting it. Some messages suggest that the filtering is "broken". It's not.

For years this site has used the Stop Forum Spam database to help identify and block spammer registrations. When a spammer registration gets through forum moderators like me report their username, email address and IP number to the service so they are blocked on the 200,000 participating forums. I report 10 or so a week. You never see most of them but sometimes I don't see it until overnight and the post will appear for a short time.

If there is no match to a username, email address or IP number in the Stop Forum Spam database the registration usually goes through. It's impossible for the software to filter out a spammer if they have never been reported before.

Sometimes a spammer will get access to a range of new IP numbers that have never been used for spam and they will just keep posting from different IP numbers until they get through. That has been happening recently as every few days a new spam post appears and is usually quickly removed. The only way to filter out those kind of registrations is the "human firewall" moderator and I think I've been pretty effective over the last 20+ years keeping this forum free of spam.

If you see a spam post before I do relax, it will be removed soon and the poster will be reported to the SFS database. There is no need to send me messages and complaints about my "broken" filters.

Is there a distinction between reporting and messaging? Specifically, I've reported each of the ones that made it through, but is that a problem or are you referring to actual messages users have sent you?

Excuse my ignorance but what in hell do these “spammers” gain by doing this anyway? I’m old and I don’t get it...

Last year, a spammer here was selling illegal drugs, passports, and driver licenses!

What else could arrive with those? Biological-warfare viruses?

I was getting both reported posts and email messages. It's fine to report them but a few of the people kept telling me that my filtering was broken and I wanted to respond to that.

They do it for a variety of reasons. Sometimes they are just trying to direct people to their articles to create traffic and sometimes the articles contain links to sites that contain malicious links that could infect your computer. Sometimes it's hard to know what they are trying to accomplish.

Most of these registrations are automated which is why so many thousands are blocked.

Another one snuck in today but it has been removed and the user has been reported to the SFS database.

Get used to it. It's getting worse all the time.
