Wow! That's great, haven't seen ice that smooth out there for a long time. Makes me want to go up right now...

Default Smooth Going. ⛸

Years ago, we skated out to our cottage on East Bear Island from Fay's Boat Yard on 10" thick black ice. We were somewhat concerned about taking this trip, but saw a truck on the ice, so off we went. Scary!

For about five dollars, one could be wearing a noodle/homemade pfd-swimmer-skater's flotation belt made with one foam noodle, sturdy line, and Gorilla waterproof tape under one's jacket, tied around one's waist, that wouldn't get in the way too much for skating, or swimming. To keep one afloat; even if you drowned, it would keep your deceased body afloat. Is a lot easier for the search and rescuers to remove a dead floater than an under water dead sinker, but obviously is best to be a survivor by pulling up and out onto the fragile ice shelf.

...while floating about in the icy cold water, just chill out and hum the words to "I Will Survive" - Gloria Gaynor, 1978
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gYkACVDFmeg

Supposedly, one can survive floating in 33-degree water for 90-minutes, but after just ten minutes your hands and arms start to freeze up, plus panic is a big problem too.

Or, instead of a noodle belt, just wear a pfd under a wind breaker, or something. Pfd's provide a lot of heat insulation and help to keep you warm even in the icy cold water.

Or, for six dollars, go ice skating at the huge, smooth PSU rink in Plymouth, https://campus.plymouth.edu/arena/ that's very close to Rt 93-Exit 25. They even have ambulatory care walkers with four vinyl tips for feet for use by non-skaters to learn to skate, and they work very good. Best to lose the original rubber tips and replace with vinyl tips which glide across the smooth ice, very good.

Maybe some non-skater could use an ambulatory care walker with the vinyl tips and go make their way out to Rattlesnake Island on ice skates while singing 'I Will Survive' and post a video in this thread ..... say-hey!

On Jan 3, ice certainly still questionable.
Unless there were some safety steps taken that weren't shown, I disapprove...
