Default Rumney Rocks sport rock climbing

"One of the premier sport climbing destinations in the country ..." "... and people stop here in RUMNEY, NEW HAMPSHIRE coming from all over the planet to go sport rock climbing on the Rumney Rocks-WMNF natural cliffs" ...which are made of schist metamorphic rock ... http://geology.com/rocks/schist.shtml

About 15-20 minutes from Route 93 - Exit 26, in Rumney on the other side of the Plymouth Super Wal-Mart and the west end traffic rotary (Route 25), and not too far from the Plymouth Municipal Airport. As you get off Exit 26 and drive west down Tenney Mt Hgwy, you can see the Rumney Rocks-White Mountain National Forest cliffs (formerly known as Rattlesnake Rocks) straight ahead down the road, from a distance of about five miles away.

The cooler weather in September, October, and November is probably(?) the busiest climbing season at Rumney Rocks.

How is sport rock climbing different than regular rock climbing?

Here's a brand new indoor, year-round practice wall just 11 beautifull miles up through the WMNF alongside the Mad River (watch close for moose at dusk, no kidding!) up the road, Route 49, from Exit 28:

http://watervillevalley.org/Recreation.html, brand new inside the WV Rec Dept gym and each climber is individually belayed by a human belayer from below, which is good for both children and adults, prices: 1 climb for $5.00, 3 climbs for $10.00, check website for regular weekly schedule, open about four or five different two hour time periods per week. Waterville Valley also has a huge indoor ice skating arena that is open summers and cost about $5.00 for two hours or so.
..........

Some local artificial wall climbing venues:

- Town of Meredith, Meredith Community Center's "Mt Meredith"; about 25 or 30' high on a wall along the basketball court, overhangs on the more difficult routes, mostly available to use in the winter, November to March, fairly new construction, excellent condition w/ town Rec Dept supervision, last winter it only cost one dollar/residents - two dollars/non-residents to use it for two hours, (if I remember correct).

- Monkey Trunks high ropes course: Weirs Beach at Fun Spot, outdoors, about 40' high, two routes straight up the outside support wall of their large wood staircase tower with no overhangs, (about ten dollars for use of the climbing wall alone depending on how busy they are, see the manager) without entry to the high ropes course.

- The Rock Barn, Tenney Mt Hgwy, Plymouth, which was inside a huge old dairy barn for the last ten years, is no longer open. It looks like it is permanently closed and there's a sign out front listing the property for sale. Anyone want to buy a huge old dairy barn, approximately 125 years old and move the historic barn building off to be rebuilt in Hawaii or someplace......hello Roseanne Barr!

- www.verticaldreams.com , Manchester NH in the old historic Waumbec Mill building.
................

Here's a hot tip; stop in at the Quonset Hut in Rumney while driving to the Rumney Rocks if you want a very interesting and low-priced shopping adventure at an old time NH store. I know, it looks a little bit rough from the outside, but it is loaded with useful items, including hand tools, mountain style clothing, bumper stickers and household and outdoor yard items at some low prices. That's the Quonset Hut in Rumney on Route 25!
