Default Barbershop locations - recommendations

Looking for a Barbershop in the Gilford, Laconia, or Meredith area.

Not looking for a fancy Salon, just a place where I can get a good haircut !

Thanks,
Bigdog

My wife just went to the Empire Beauty School in Laconia. She got a great haircut for a discounted price. It may take a little longer than a normal haircut because the teachers have to come by from time to time to check the progress, but the price sure is good.

Always get a good cut at Ruel's on Main street in Meredith. Popular place though and only open Tues-Friday. It's between Phu Jee and Karen & Barry's.

Thumbs up Barbary's Barbershop

Dan Barbary at Barbary's Barbershop on Main St in Downtown Laconia. His shop is on the left at the top of Main St, just past the exit from the parking lot. Plenty of free parking, and a truly old-style barbershop. Hubby's been going there for years because both the price and the cut are just right!

... and for what it's worth, Dan does a great job shaving women's heads, too!

Another vote for Barbary's. Very old-school and great with kids, too.

Another vote for Ruel's. They do a a great job and they are lot less expensive than down here in MA. The only problem I have with them is that I am usually only up there on weekends and, as stated above, they are only open Tues-Fri. When they are open they are usually stacked up with customers waiting, but I guess that price you pay for a good haircut at a good price.

www.turnagebarbershop.com, Main Street, Plymouth, and just down the street from Rand's Hardware, an independant hardware with a large rental dept in case you need a chainsaw or a ditchwitch or something, and home of the 35-cent cup of hardware coffee!

Default Heads Up Barbers on Union Ave, Laconia

I've been going to Heads Up for about 6 years and highly recommend them. The shop is run by two older women but the clientele is almost all men. They are sort of half way between a regular barbershop and a salon. They do a great job, they have their own parking area, and they take appointments so you don't have to wait. Haircuts are $18. Phone is 528-2823.

Default I go to Ruel's

Ruel's in Meredith has two barbers, sisters actually, so the busy waiting room moves quickly. Haircuts are $12.00.

FYI... went to Empire Beauty School in Laconia for a haircut.

Got right in no wait, but haircut took literally over an hour. The young student cutting my hair was very inexperineced, and had to be coached most of the time. I was very concerned that I was the students first guinea pig..... And that I would walk out of store looking like the last of the Mohicans or something.

She actually did a very good job, but I don't think I would go back because of the length of time I spent there. Well over an hour ! I think she cut 1 hair at a time, and she was very nervous in the process.

Guess you get what you pay for, although cost wasn't the factor going there.... Anyway, it was an experience !

Will try another on the list next time !

There aren't many of those left around here, not with all the beauty salons doing it now. If someone wants to spend the money to get into the hair care business, they want to do everything, not just haircuts. I know if I started any kind of business, I would want to make my horizons as broad as I could. If I opened a barber shop, I would want to do styling and everything, because I would make more money. If I want to be in the business, I wouldn't want to just limit myself to haircuts. However, I don't like the outrageous prices the salons charge for just a haircut, but it's because it costs tens of thousands to go to a place like Empire to learn how do it, plus once you're in the business, the overhead is high. The styling products and shampoos they use are expensive, plus the rental of the booth, etc.

I know all this because a friend of mine, she runs a hair salon and she has to have another stylist in the shop to split the expenses with, because it's so expensive for the rent of the space, the supplies, heat, electric, hot water, etc.

You bring back a fond memory of my childhood. With five kids, cash was tight for my parents. When the four boys hair was getting long we would go to the barber school for a haircut. The place had about 20 chairs. The four boys and my dad would sit down. They would actually give us normal looking hair cuts for practice. Then after the instructors approval, would grab the clipper and cut it all off. I remember being to young to understand why they would go to all that trouble with the scissors and combs just to leave it on the floor at the end. One time, the student gave me a Mohawk style and let me out of the chair to go show my dad. I can still hear my dad telling me to "get back in the chair". My dad would pay the $2.50 total for the 5 haircuts in the late 60s. Thanks for the memory trigger.

Default Down the cellar NOW!

Memories,

Dad used to cut my brother's and my hair. Get down the cellar NOW! We could not say just a little off the top!

It was a treat to go to Carly's in Wolfeboro, kind of like Floyd's in Mayberry.

Good like finding a good barber.
