How to get rid of a boat. Donate?

Ok I have this 1986 Wellcraft Monte Carlo. I need to get rid of it. It is in my driveway sucking up space. I have tried to sell it but no one wants a big boat it seems. This is a 28 foot long 9.5' beam. Twin 215 Mercruiser's. Runs ok and just got a $6800 paint job at Unique Boat in Moultonborough. New swim platform as well. But it is a 1986 so needs some electrical/interior/canvas (Bees made holes in the top) TLC. Nothing bad though. What is the best way to get rid of a big boat like this. Will anyplace take it as a donation for some tax credit or anything. Give me some Ideas.

Besides donating to me?

I donated a boat to the purple heart foundation which funds programs for wounded veterans. There was a law change a few years ago, that changed how they value it for tax purposes. Once they sell it, then they send you the tax form.

You can sell a house next to a landfill for the right price. Put a price on it that's too good to be true and someone will take it.

Thanks for thinking about me except I do not believe in fiberglass......would have to be aluminum.....which works real good with an 8.99 quart of Rustoleum and a 4" roller, especially if it gets a primer coat. A 6800 dollar paint job.....holy smokes......I spilt my coffee when I read that!

www.faysboatyard.com over in Gilford has a terrific used boat website and they sell on consignment. About four years ago, they sold a 21' bowrider for me and the buyer was a Canadian from Ontario who saw it on their website and drove down to take a look see and bought it. Getting it sold quick like that was a big surprise!

They also charge storage fees while it's sitting on the lot waiting for a buyer. I assume that's standard practice at any boat yard but it still get's subtracted from your net when the boat sells.

Don't recall storage fees from four years ago, and I would remember that too, so that's probably a relatively new racket.

If the boat is in as good a shape as the picture indicates, I have to believe there is a market out there somewhere for it.

Why all the expensive, recent updates (paint, swim platform, etc) if you were going to "get rid of it"?

That's not the standard practice that I am aware of. What they do however is restrict asking price to an amount that they deem will sell the boat.

For a lot less than $6800 you can purchase a whole setup of boat, outboard & trailer that's good to go in style all up & down the whole lake ...... I know .... because I have one!

Because we keep our boat in a marina full of $100,000 boats and I didn't want it to look like the Beverly Hillbilly's was moving in next door.

We had originally bought the boat and dock as a way to come up for the weekend without having to trailer up, and getting an investment. A floating cabin so to speak.
I hadn't planned to sell when we got it painted a few years ago, when we bought a house up here. So we hardly used the boat as it was slipped 18 miles from the house. So the boat went unused and unloved for two years, now.
I had been starting it up and cleaning it, but now it sits forlorn under a tarp...
We have put it on craigslist, but only get tons of spam replies when we do now.
It has been on this sites classifieds. No replies at all. Consignment is fine, but we can't do that until Spring now. Hadn't even thought of that really. We had a friend call last night and talked to him about it, so he is supposed to be coming to look at it in a few days.
I'll let you know what we decide after that. Meanwhile I will call Fays or Shep's to see what they do. Are they even open now?

Say.....the guys at Fay's have probably already seen and read this thread....so all's you have to do is email them the above photo along with what you want to get for a price.... or ask them what's a reasonable selling price in their opinion .....and that should start the selling process going....plus most likely they could find a spot on their Rt 11-Gilford property for it no problem....because it looks like a very sellable boat....which is what they want.....they want a boat that can find a buyer......the faster the better....for them and for you.

NADA Guides for boats place the avg retail at around $8k w/ a salon enclosure and bimini. I would check them out and add in your other options and you'll get a starting point.

Do you have a recent or soon-to-be ex-wife? Just spread rumors that will get back to her saying how that boat is the love of your life, your reason for being, and how you'd die before she ever got ahold of it. Trust me...it will be gone within a week.
