Default Ice fishing poles vs. tip-ups?

When ice fishing, what is the advantage to using a tip-up vs. an ice fishing pole with a holder? Maybe the reel will freeze if used outside shelter? Lack of a flag alert? What else...

The biggest issue is simply the ice freezing around the line. A tip up's line and reel is completely submerged in the water...
