Dollar General? Mboro
Does anyone know if that tree clearing on RTE 25 near the school is for that Dollar General?

Can't say for sure, but the abutting parcel of land is for sale and the listing specifically states that the lot is subject to a restriction that it can't be used for a store similar to Dollar General.

No more stores!!!
We do not need another store anywhere around here, especially a dollar store, there's already too many.

Here comes Dollar General
Yup, get your dollars ready. The General is coming to town. The building plans were approved after many conditions were met even with lingering doubt that, built in wetlands, its water runoff plan will actually work as engineered. In the end, there was no way to stop DG's corporate lawyers. Hopefully the town learned that designating commercial zones in wetlands wasn't the best idea.

They have been popping up a lot of places. There is a new one in Barnstead, Raymond and Tamworth. I have never been in one so cannot comment on what they are like, I do know it will not really fit in with the landscape right there across from the school.

dollar store
They have every right to apply for and having been approved by the town to build a store. If you oppose, DON'T SHOP THERE.

I am surprised to read the opinion that the proliferation of Dollar General stores is sad. Their products are sold to meet the demands of consumers. Their stores provide jobs in the communities they serve. The real estate taxes paid help the budgets of the towns where they are located.
None of this seems sad to me. What am I missing? |

While Dollar General stores have a few items for a doll2, they are not a "dollar store". They are more a convenience store, similar to a 7-11 and Walmart that merged. They have food, clothing, hardware, and have long hours each day, and can save time and expenses of driving 10 -15 miles to a large supermarket or Walmart. Not for everyone, but they will have a niche in each of their markets. As some posted already, if you are opposed to them, don't shop there. Pretty simple.

Dollar stores are like panhandlers--if you want them to go away, stop giving them money.

Employment ?
Dollar General employees a minimum number of people at minimum wage. Sells very cheap products from China. According to google they have been challenged for selling contaminated products from China.
Each community should ask what is the impact to the local family owned stores? Seems to me that if the family business can't make it against the competition of these chains, then there is a zero sum gain for the community in the form of taxes and employment.....just sayin. |

If DG employs a "minimum number of people at minimum wage" and these folks were actually hired, does that not imply that, for these folks, there are no better alternative jobs for them?

But if you vote with your feet and do not go there and they go out of business then you are left with an abandoned eye sore. You see a lot of these empty building or strip malls around the state unfortunately.

Not to stand up for DG but when Dunkin' Donuts went in Wolfeboro the planning board did everything in their power to try to stop them. After two years they finally got their approvals and now that place is so busy, it amazes me every time I go by. The people of the town certainly seemed to want it even if the people who run the town didn't.

... it's your money?
Have only been inside a Dollar General once, up in Littleton, NH, and left without buying anything. Why go to a Dollar General or a Dollar Tree?
So, other than a possible more convenient Dollar General location, isn't shopping Wal-Mart, Hannaford's and Lowe's a totally better place to spend your dollar! Wal-Mart and Lowe's have easy to do, return policies, and chances are the Dollar General does not. Why, even Hannaford's once let me return a defective grapefruit with a bad navel, and gave me about 8-dollars or something for the whole bag of ten grapefruits .... and I got to keep the nine good grapefruits ..... made me feel like Donald J. Trump .... just imagine that..... Hannaford's ....whoopeeee!

The "don't shop there" if you don't like it is fine, but, I have a problem with the fact that, all these buildings go up, and when they fail, or decide to move the location (build again), we're left with an abandoned building...IT HAPPENS ALL THE TIME!...Build the store, but if it fails, make them take it down, and let nature resume it's place......Oh, and while I'm at it, make it look like it belongs...a little rustic won't hurt a damn thing!

DG Buildings
DG leases the building from a large developer. The developer hopes to have the ongoing rent to cover costs. When the tenant leaves the building remains empty if they can not find another tenant. About the building blending into local architecture......only will happen if the town has existing requirements in effect through building codes and does not approve requested variances.
For towns that do not want the proliferation of Dollar General in areas not suited for this type of building...look at what is happening in Wakefield NH https://www.facebook.com/groups/1497...?ref=bookmarks |

what I meant to say there are no local family owned stores that would likely compete with Dg for business at least on any large scale.

Do you remember how every town had a General Store and how when they died people were so upset. Well, welcome back the in town General Store. Just because it doesn't have creaky old floors and dusty shelves and offers three month old biscuits as many of the surviving general stores do, does not make them bad places. They are your in town general store of 2016. Enjoy. And in 50 years they will have acquired all of the dusty charm of the few old general stores currently left over from the last era.

Poor construction
The dollar general stores are one of the most poorly constructed buildings I have seen. Ever notice how fast they go up....like Alton and Barnstead. Not block building but rather panels. The one in Barnstead is right next to the closed Barnstead Country Store.

I've noticed when traveling that any of the dollar stores are usually close to a pawn shop and bail bonds office........don't see them in nicer areas.

Bail bond offices cluster around where the jail is located and even then only in fairly large cities.

IIRC, most of the generic "dollar stores" are now under one corporate boss. Only "Dollar Tree" has items for exactly one dollar, which helps the consumer when shopping for regular known items. And no sales tax in NH.
You know when your community is in decline when you have pawn shops AND billboards that announce, "Had an Accident?" |

My remark about dollar stores, pawn shops and bail bondsmen was meant to be tongue in cheek but in other parts of the country these are usually signs of a declining neighborhood.

I lived in Groton ma for a couple of years . A very old beautiful colonial town. Sometime likely in 60's they allowed a strip mall to go in place of an original structure in the downtown area . It still looks out of character with the town and that will neve change
