DirecTV drops the Weather Channel.

Just in case no one noticed yet, DirecTV has dropped the Weather Channel from it's lineup. Stupid mistake if you ask me. Time to write a scathing email I guess.

I hadn't noticed. I never watch it. The local weather guys always show national weather anyway, plus web-available weather, including TWC sort of make it a bit redundant. My 2 cents anyway.

I have been a loyal Directv customer since 1996 and am extremely happy with them. Weather Channel is really no big deal since I have the free app on my computer and smart phone.

Really dont need to see Jim Cantore blowing around in a storm telling me its windy and wet or that its snowing really really hard.

I didn't know it was gone because I never watch it.

Any time I would go to The Weather Channel I would find they had some TV show instead of the actual weather. TWC can keep all their named storms too. We are naming snow storms now? Talk about drama.
Won't be missed by this weather buff.

Accuweather is not my favorite but much better than TWC. This news link talks about how Accuweather is launching their own weather channel which should air on cable and DirectTV very soon.

Funny, I feel the same way as others here. I am a weather junkie and feel no loss over the Weather Channel (TWC) on DirectTV (I am customer). TWC had too many reality shows and the storm naming was lame. DirectTV replaced with TWC with WeatherNation.

I have five weather apps on my phone and the NOAA web site is very good for REAL weather information. I also have the Weather4Us channel on Roku. If there is a a weather emergency I would look to those sources. If the power goes out, so does DirectTV anyway. (In that case the iphone is my best source and I have 3 days of back-up power for that)

... but as a former Weather Channel lover and supporter, all the way back to John Coleman and the inaugural broadcasts, I find that NBC Universal's Reality Show network is just not worth watching.

I can do far more with the weather apps on my phone, laptop, and tablet.

If I had DirecTv, it would be no loss.

Exactly the same feeling here. Ten years ago I was a WC fanatic but it has really changed and I never watch it anymore. With all of the available apps and as CateP says, the NWS offices in Gray and Boston/Taunton are great.
You can also follow the individual meteorologists of your choice on both Facebook and Twitter (seriously, don't knock it 'til you try it!) They are all there from all of the Boston media channels and several of the Maine ones as well.
The naming of winter storms???Don't even get me started....

I gave up on TWC years ago. Instead of the weather every ten minutes or so, it's now a bunch of sensationalist reality shows. And now they're naming winter storms - which has only given rise to jokes about their insipidness ("This morning, if you're going out, be careful as Morning Fog Rupert covers many of the valleys, giving way to Light Mist Henrietta...")

To get weather, try going online to the Weather Underground. They even include a link to webcams.

We dropped cable entirely at the lake and honestly seldom watched TWC anyway. We also don't watch it much in Ohio either, since it's almost impossible to find an actual weather report for where I'm at.

I have found that, when traveling, I just hit the website of a local TV station. They always have local weather available, including radar.

In west Alton, I use the following links:

You all have it right. TWC was never good for local forecast anyway imo. 10 years ago when it was all we had for up to the minute info, you would have to wait for local on the 8's every 10 minutes. Now just click on to your favorite web site and have instant info and a local forecaster. It really is obsolete now. The only attraction it has is the over the top coverage during a big event but our local stations do that now also!

In my opinion, Weather nation (Directv replacement) is better, getting back to the weather as a main show. I also avoid TWC website because the links are slow and take a lot of bandwidth. Besides, how do pictures of abandoned buildings in Detriot be associated with weather?
What I hated most was the self righteous TWC touting that Direct was putting "millions of Americans at risk" of missing critical weather info. Getting the celebrities to promote this message is pretty low.
I more missed it when Time-Warner had a beef with CBS. Missed a lot of shows during their hiatus, and missed Showtime as well.

I was also appalled by "Americans at risk" tack that TWC took. An excellent reason why weather warnings and watches should not be privatized. Rick Santorum, in the pocket of Accuweather, tried to do exactly that.

To be honest, having lived in this state my entire life, WMUR does a terrible job of forecasting weather North of Concord and South of Lancaster. They just don't get how the mountains and water features in Central NH affect the weather.

The forecast from the Mount Washington Observatory is really your best option from the Lakes to the Notch!

I love the science behind the weather. When The Weather Channel first came out, it was the best source of info I could find, outside the pay for weather sites that were very slow at that point in time.

They seem to have completely lost their focus and are more into hype and reality shows. Too bad. I hardly ever watch them these days.

Naming winter weather events was the bottom line for me. No business doing that.

Just saw a post to the effect that The Weather Channel is coming back to DirecTV. It seems that rather than lose 20% of their viewers, they agreed to make programming changes (more weather, less "reality" shows) and limit their rate increase to 1 cent per viewer.

Although I'm not on DirecTV, I'll send them a "thank you" for helping fix The Weather Channel's programming.
