Default Winnisquam

As noted there has been a big change since Sunday. I had to come up today as the Roofers were here (that's another post). We are on the west side, south of Pot island; the shoreline is almost free and the middle of the lake is very dark.

Inside the cabin was mid 40's, up 10 degrees from Sunday, can almost turn the water on. Most of the snow is gone. Guess I better go to Killington this weekend

Default Video of Winnipesaukee ice from April 12th

This video was recorded April 12th. Lots of changes since then but a great video showing our frozen lake!

Credit Bill Hemmel for the great shots.

Paugus is black. The coves are clear. There are open water cracks across the ice. It's now a few very large slabs that have not drifted too much. Some wind out of the SW tomorrow will have my attention. Not sure about ice free. 24 hours will tell a lot. I have 40 degree water temp @1.5'.

I sent you a PM with some info on your docks.

My recollection from many years of watching the water temperature is this: It seemed like every year that I put my boat in within a few days of ice out the first temperature reading on the depth finder was 42 degrees and that was very consistent, year after year.

If you have 40 degrees now then it is very close! Bring on summer!

Looking at the Wolfeboro Corinthian Yacht Club cam, it appears that the whole ice pack has shifted toward the docks (not a good thing for any structures if the pack is moving fast and still has all that mass). So things are shifting.

Interestingly, other views are very different. Snake Eyes view still looks very locked in. The view there is similar to what I see out my windows on Merrymeeting. Still fairly solid looking and not quite dark enough yet.

I hope all of this softens and breaks up more before the predicted winds over the weekend or else there could be a lot of damage.

Default Keeping up with the Cams

Sometimes people change the address of their webcams and it takes me a while to find them again. Today the Ice-Out page at www.rattlesnakecam.com/iceout.htm has three cams restored, Cow Cam, Winnipesaukee.net cam (middle of Alton Bay), and the Channel Cam at the Wiers channel.

I am still looking for Overlook Cam in Paugus Bay and the Welch Island Cam. If you know the addresses of any Winnipesaukee Cams please let me know on this thread.

Some of us just can't get enough!

For those of you with private cams, please take a shot of your view from time to time and post here so we can see the state of ice-out.

Thanks
IG (and the rest of the anxious ice-out watchers.

As an aside I always marvel at how fast the "views" of this thread escalate as we near ice out. It's well over 1,000 views per day at this point.

Hi Island Girl
The Paugus Bay camera was mine when I had a place at Overlook in Paugus Bay. We now have a place on Rattlesnake so the Paugus Bay Camera is no longer active.
Thank you for all the work you do with Ice Out. It is addictive but in a good way!!

Scroll down the page. Since this cam is a live view and not an image, I don't display on the page as it would take too long to load and mobile users don't like that. I link to the cams that are video bases below the images. Corinthian is another live cam you will find there. Just click on the image for those cams and the video will begin.

Some live cams also display an image to which I can link. I cannot find that for the Melvin Village Cam.

Thanks for taking the time to post

Can you add this to the iceout page? It's a view of the Long Island Bridge. It's temporarily public to watch iceout.

Here's a Skype shot from our camp taken across Wentworth Cove just now. That's Governor's Island across the way. The GI bridge is to the left and Saunder's Bay would be to the right.

Drove by Sunset Lake this afternoon, a man-made lake in Middleton. Yesterday it was still totally ice covered. Today almost ice free.

It's usually a week or so ahead of the bigger lakes.

I'm a little later with this than I'd planned but it was super foggy this morning and you couldn't see anything from the webcam. Those rocks beyond the dock were surrounded by ice yesterday. It's getting there!

(This is the channel between Ambrose Cove and Moultonborough Bay)

Default Ice Update W/Pics

Saunders bay was still locked in solid last night.

Fay's boatyard had a few boats in the water but they weren't going anywhere as there was still ice 25 yards out from the docks.

Here's a few more shots taken this morning off my deck. Everything south of Welch is very black and ready to break up with some help from the wind. Everything North of Welch still looks white and more solid.

Default interesting...

Came out to the island this morning and it was pretty clear all the way around... however now a pretty good breeze from the south has brought the ice back in... We'll see what it is like Monday morning when we try to leave for work... "I'm sorry, can't get off island until the ice melts"

It was hard to tell for sure because the ice is the same color as the water but it looked totally clear from Ames Farm all the way to Diamond Island!

Looking at WeirsCam and Wolfeboro cams, there are significant change going on. The ice pack in those areas seems to be breaking up and disintegrating, while places on the northern side of the lake still seem more solid.

Thumbs up Going Fast!

The ice in our cove is receding quickly now, and the remaining ice is getting darker each day. Here's an image from the Echo Shores Webcam taken just before 6 PM this afternoon:

Paugus ice is drifting with the wind. I can see ice piling on shores both east, west and south of me. I don't think its damaging anything. It appears to be breaking up on contact. Every shift of wind breaks the floe into smaller pieces.

Thumbs up Meredith Bay Update

The ice has pretty much moved out of the inner harbor past Meredith Marina. I was working on my balcony today(right next to the Meredith Yacht Club) and was pleasantly surprised to see the Loons are back!

That is a very interesting image I don't think I recall seeing one quite like that before, the reflection so perfect on the calm water and then none on the ice.

Default Taken at 2 p.m.

by the time the sun went down there was about 200' of more blue. It is still solid between VP and Lockes. There is still a patch of ice between Fay's and the first channel marker. I'm feeling confident about my guess.

Default The Ice is on the move

This was taken at dawn 4-19 from Big Pier at LSP lookihng toward Diamond and Rattlesnake. Last night this view was open water for about 3 football fields.

Looks like the ice is moving around alot with the wind.

Yesterday AM there were guys in small boats and one guy with waders on fishing off Ellacoya, that area is now full of pack ice.

Let's hope there is a LOT of melting today. This from the National Weather Service..
* From Monday evening through Wednesday morning

* low pressure will develop off the mid Atlantic coast on Monday
and move northeastward into the Gulf of Maine Tuesday. At this
time it looks as though this low will produce anywhere between 1
to 2.5 inches of rain across much of the area... with locally
higher amounts possible. The heaviest rainfall should occur
Monday night into early Tuesday... but runoff and additional
snowmelt will keep the threat for flooding going through at
least Tuesday night. The heaviest rainfall is expected on the
coastal plain as well as the east slopes of the White Mountains
northeastward into the Maine foothills.

* Rivers are already gradually on the rise from snowmelt over the
past few weeks. 1 to 2.5 inches of rainfall will allow some
rivers to rise to bankfull and even overflow their banks.
Additional ice movement is likely as well. Urban and poor
drainage flooding is also expected... especially Monday night and
the morning hours on Tuesday.
Along with prediction for high winds tomorrow, there could be a lot of damage if large ice packs start moving around.

The ice went out in Green's Basin (the northwest tip of the lake) today and thus far we have seen one loon. It is almost time to call the marina for our boats.

From Lincoln Park on Belknap Point today. A small amphibious plane landed and took a short ride on the water.

Still ice to the north and in the Broads. Clear from Glendale out past FL26, still some slush in the main boat launch ramp. Smith come mostly clear, some ice at the neck.

Ice-out should be tomorrow, or Tuesday at the latest.

About 50% of the ice there this morning is gone now, and it's flat calm.

Default Candle ice

Paugus Bay has a lot of slabs of rotting ice. The wind broke it up pretty good today, should be ice free with tomorrow's rain and wind.

I made this video today showing the candle ice on Paugus.

Went out to BI today, left from Sheps, there was a nice open swath of water out to the Post Office in the morning, by afternoon that open area had shifted several hundred yards south replaced with packed in ice sheets. Had to do a little "ice breaking" to get back to open water when I left. What ice is out there is either candle ice or quickly loosing it's integrity. I broke through with a wooden paddle where I needed to with little effort. I won't last long I have no doubt it'll be gone this week.

Default Migration

The recent photos are starting to have a late impact on wildlife here in Florida !
Until yesterday our population of Snow Birds had stayed in place and delayed the spring migration north to the summer nesting grounds. Yesterday there was talk around the Florida pools , where the birds gather , about starting the flight north ( lt was also about 90 and the birds are overheating )
They follow rt 95 and 93 north so be on the lookout for the overloaded flock
( they actually drive grand marqueis ) others will return soon but with a Southwest route

Two weeks ago we observed a huge migration on 95 N. in Virginia. They were as thick as molasses. Glad we were headed in the opposite direction, as we were headed for Myrtle Beach. There was a large concentration of the Winnebago species in the flock.

From yesterday....

From the top, BI post office Sunday morning, open water looking back to the mainland.

Ice flow that came in later on in the afternoon, and making may way very slowly out of the ice flow and into open water.

Final shot is from the N/E side of Bear looking across. While that may look pretty solid, by afternoon there was a major crack that opened up about 15 feet wide from Bear all the way to the mainland. Further more sitting along shore I could hear the ice grinding along with major cracking and buckling along the shore.

Fish finder was reporting a surface water temp of 39.1 degrees

Default Shifting winds

Still a lot of ice out there. The wind shift to the NE brought ice in toward Belknap Point this morning spanning the width of the photo. An hour after this photo, the ice sheet was against Belknap Point extending north to Locke's blocking access to Glendale via FL26. Tomorrow afternoon's wind shift to W will bring who knows what.

Default Akwa Marina boat on the shore

Someone should move that little boat on the beach at Akwa Marina. If the wind continues to pile ice on the shore, it will get schmushed.

It appears that the ice from Saunders Bay has been blown into Wentworth cove which was ice free on Saturday.

Either someone moved it or it is already schmushed. I hope someone moved it.

Talking WeirsCam

It's pretty cool to see the ice move around on the WeirsCam time-lapse video!

Lake temperature is at 41°!

Some one must have moved it ☺

Here is a video of the ice shifting, and make a lot of noise, like a big wind chime

Default Warms my heart to see that image

Thanks for the images. I was getting discouraged looking at my dock which shows no progress for a few days. Now I know it is really happening. There should be some big changes overnight. (my dock is about a mile south east of webssatwinni's dock.

Keeping an eye on my dock...not liking the looks of this. I should stop looking, shouldn't I?

Good news? The ice is still out of the channel lol.

Default 6:11 p.m. 4/20 36 degrees

ice is moving back into Smith cove. What a difference a day makes. This was yesterday from VPR looking at Belknap Point. I'd go take pics now, but I refuse to get pelted with sleet.

Yesterday afternoon was wide open from Belknap Point to Welch. I just drove by it now and it looks you could drive a tractor trailer across the ice...amazing what a shift in wind can do.

Default From Scenic Drive

Took this early this morning from Lincoln Park. Smith Cove is also completely locked up with ice. I'm looking like a loser with my 2.15PM today pick!

Took this one about an hour ago. Wolfeboro Bay is mostly open except for ice over by Goodhue Hawkins. However, once the wind shifts to the west, as predicted for later this morning, I expect much of the ice out on the lake will move back in.
