Axe and Ale
Be careful...TWI (throwing while intoxicated) can end poorly.

Twi
I have to wonder if the restaurant decided to locate at the Airport Commons in Gilford because there's a Doc-In-A-Box across the parking lot "just in case"?

Went to Climax throwing in Belmont yesterday with my son. They have no food or drink, BYO, so we really didn't spend a lot of money. $25 per person per hour. We rented 1 hour and threw 11 games, which was enough! It was a fun thing to do on a crappy day.
I think the one in Gilford will have food and drinks so it will make you hang around and spend more money. |

When I was a senior in high school our metal shop teacher was tired of trying to keep us in line.
All our mandatory lessons and projects were done so we had about a month of screwing around to enjoy before graduation. To get us busy again the teacher brought in a large full color picture book entitled "Arms and Armor of Medieval Times" and told us we would make anything in the book. Some made swords, knives, breast plates and helmets but I chose a real challenge. I made a flail! It consisted of: a steel handle that was turned on the lathe a chain that was bent out of rod stock and welded into links an aluminum ball made from six segments turned on the lathe and then blind screwed together several pointed spikes that screwed into threaded holes on the ball That thing could do some serious damage! I was quite disappointed when I was informed that it could not be brought home! The flail along with all the other reproduction medieval gear went on display at a local bank. I wonder where it went after that... |

They'd be smart to start with a soft opening so staff can get tuned in.

We stopped in yesterday to meet friends for drinks and apps but didn't have time to throw.
We ordered the poutine which sucked- fries were rock hard and cold and the toppings could have been warmer. The deviled eggs (comes with everything bagel seasoning and a piece of bacon on top) were good, as were the pretzels with mustard and pub cheese. The burgers going by looked good. Will try it again. Its a decent sized place. Definitely can hold a crowd. I didn't witness any flails, jousting or axes being thrown from carousels though |

...... pink ping-pong!
What this place could use is a bright pink ping-pong table, off to the side somewhere, so's the people who are not into throwing hatchets at a target can have something fun to do and watch ..... pink ping-pong ...... an instant crowd-pleaser! Then, when someone gets really annoyed, they can always throw their ping-pong paddle at the target! ......

We went there with a group of 6 last evening to throw axes and have dinner.
Throwing was a blast. The staff gave us beginners ideas on games to play which were a lot of fun. The hour went by quickly and even our thirteen year old was able to hit the target and win one game. Dinner, however was a big disappointment. Most of us had pizzas which were OK. The shrimp po boy and fries were not so good. The wings were the best thing on the menu. Overall, it was average bar food. Don't get your expectations to high. Stick with beer, axes, pizza and wings and have fun. |

I went there tonight with a buddy of mine just to throw. The place is nice and the people were very friendly. I had thrown twice before at other places and I didn't like the wooden handle axes there. Maybe I'm being picky, but I thought they slip out of my hands too easily. The other places that I've thrown had axes with grips. I mentioned it to one of the employees there so maybe they can put grip tape on them. I threw much better at the one in Belmont because the axes weren't as slippery. JMO! All in all we still had fun!

We have been a few more times, I would consider it OK at best. We had a reservation for dinner Saturday night for 5 people. The place was empty and they tried to stick us down in the back near the bathrooms instead of up in the main dining area. This wasn't going to fly for us, so they moved us up front but put as at a table for 4 with a chair in end which was just as frustrating when there were plenty of large tables available. We were informed that they were keeping them open IN CASE larger parties came. They finally moved us to an appropriate sized table. It never got to more than 1/3 capacity all night, so they would have been holding the tables for no reason. Irritating to say the least! Their seating is fairly modular so they could always move things around.
The apps came out in a reasonable time frame, but the dinners took forever! The waitress apologized at one point, stating that the kitchen was overwhelmed with volume. As empty as the place was they will have a tough time keeping up if they are busy. They just redid their menu, not a ton of changes from what I can tell. The steak tips and fries the boys ate were ok, a bit tough and I am not a fan of the shoestring fries they use. They are like Mcdonalds fries, but not as good. My wife's fish sandwich was decent. My son and I tried the cajun chicken pasta. Extremely disappointing, especially for the $27 price. Never again! I have had their burgers, they aren't bad. Their poutine seems to be cold every time. I think they are trying to be a bit fancier than they should be, they need to simplify it and work on quality. Will give it some time before we go again, or would stick to very basic items only. |

Finally Made It!
We finally made it to Axe & Ale over the weekend... The place is bigger than I thought inside, very deceiving from the outside! Anyway we tried the Asian Sesame chicken wings and the fried pickles as apps. Both were very good and portions were large. My wife had a chicken sandwich which she said was excellent. I did order an Absolute screwdriver which was ruined by the orange juice they use which is just terrible... Sorry but I am spoiled by Tropicana Pure Premium!!
While we didn't throw any axes, we did walk over to that area and there were many lanes available including some video lanes where you can play games like tic tac toe with an axe!! I think this place would be a lot of fun to visit with friends on a rainy day. The food we had was good and hopefully they do something about that OJ!! We will be back!! Dan

A retail store, Scout, located in a Tanger outlet on the Oregon coast, has an axe throwing area.
An odd fit for an outlet store, but hey, what about putting one in at the Tilton outlets?

Axe and Ale 2.0
Went to Axe and Ale last October with family and threw axes and ate some apps while playing. Fun. Chicken fingers, beer, etc. Food was pretty good. Have read all these mixed reviews, so I went back this past weekend for dinner, and I have to say, the food was BETTER than expected. Hot apps, salads, chicken, all good. Burgers were yummy and the bun was great - the bun is important and often gets overlooked! All three of us were happy with our meals. I noticed they are open for breakfast so, yup, I went in again the next morning to check it out. It was kinda surprisingly great! Eggs benedict, corned beef hash, a number of things for us, all very good. Dishes maybe a couple bucks more than at the diner, but worth it.
BUT the service was REALLY slow, which has been mentioned before. Dinner was a little slow, and the breakfast was extremely slow, especially when I ordered an egg and cheese sandwich to go for the late-sleepers in my brood. Because we were not in a rush, it did not matter, but if I was trying to sneak in a quick dinner before a show at Meadowbrook or whatever it is called, I would not go there as I would be afraid of missing the start of the show. Hopefully they figure out staffing, hopefully by summer...it will ABSOLUTELY be on the short list for my lake weekends. If you tried it last summer and were not impressed, I suggest trying it again. Just not if you are running late! Cheers!

We stopped in yesterday for breakfast. The food was decent. The scrambled eggs were a bit cold and it took forever to get served. They had 2 waitresses on duty and a hostess that sat around and did nothing. One was crazy busy, the other was slow, and the bartender wasn't doing much either.
I think a bit of coordination and communication would have gone a long way. Unless the bartender was managing, there was nobody there directing which was certainly needed. Help each other out people! |

We drove to Patrick's on Tuesday forgetting that they are closed that day. So we decided to give the Axe and Ale a try. We were pleasantly surprised. As noted it is quite large inside and they have a large U shaped bar which we sat at.
It was not too busy at 4:30 PM so that might have factored into the good service. They have a very good selection of draft beer so I got my Guinness and J got her Tuckerman's pale ale. I had the special sandwich, a grilled turkey BLT which was very good. It was a substantial sandwich with lots of hand carved turkey. J had the roasted beet salad which she said was excellent. We will be back. Alan |

The mozzarella sticks were the best I’ve had ever. Very big, not generic frozen ones, they bend when you pick them up.
Someone please try them and report back for a second opinion?! Sent from my iPhone using Winnipesaukee Forum mobile app |

Based on LakeLoveLife's review above, the fam and I checked out Axe and Ale Taphouse today.
1. The mozzarella sticks are as good as reviewed above—EXCELLENT. 2. The rest of the good was also excellent—chicken sandwich, pulled pork pizza, chicken fingers and fries, and a burger. 3. Prices are reasonable for the serving size. 4. Service was excellent and perfectly timed, though it was also a fairly slow Columbus/Indigenous Peoples Day. Totally on board with this place! While eating the fries we got instead I saw what sure looked like an order of cheese sticks get carried by. I asked the bartender about it and it turns out they still serve them - she didn't know why the menu didn't list them. Next time we're in we'll try 'em - they looked good. -jim |
