Waterski Boat Classic (2014)
Moved from Saturday to Sunday, August 10th, 10-4. Should be some nice fast boats so please join us. Pics of a couple of vintage rigs currently available on CL. Hard to get 60 plus out of a merc 80 but it can be done! Ride like the wind……..The channel is open, have to watch for ice but the sun has been nice a couple of days so I guess it's boating season.

Sunday, August 10th, 10-4
The Lakes Region Waterski Boat Classic was approved by the Laconia Parks Commission last night. See you at the point park of Lake Opechee on the 10th of August, plenty of time to get your classic ride up and humming.

I wish I still had this
This was never in any Official Ski races on Winnisquam, but it was all over the lake during the 60's and off and on in the 80's.
I know we bent the tow bar pulling 6 girls on slalom down by bear point NOTE: that was a long long time ago. If I remember we had multiple spotters, the power that had was incredible. My Dad may have entered a "saucer" race with a friend of ours around 67. I don't have the boat, but I still have the Yellow Northland Saucer. I hope to stop by your event this year. PS: as a 5 or 6 year old I remember "Wild Thing"!!! we used to rent a house on Hill Rd behind Jays. |

To C n C
I'd love to see the saucer which we could include in the Northland and race ski display. Probably made in Laconia, and most people don't know what they are. We had one as well, miserable ride, I could do a 360 "in the day". Very dangerous, very heavy 1" plywood with a beautiful, durable bright yellow finish with a red northland logo. I once found a single Northland trick ski floating in the middle of the lake, I wonder if anyone was ever looking for it?

Dangerous to ride.... &$@€%# scary when you fall off... If the the saucer dove, it would come up like a "reverse leaf". It would shoot out of the water and take your teeth out,, or the back of your head.
When you fell you would spin in a 360 desperately looking for the yellow blur before it found you. My sister and I both got up on it as adults. I made one 360 and yelled ya hoo and dove off I really hope to come over. I also found Northland snow skis and the "manual" when cleaning out my uncles house last year Great memories, Now to make some new ones in the new house. |

zip sleds
Anybody got a zip sled in the shed or under their deck?
They used to make tiny plastic boats about 4' long, about 2 ' wide and 2" deep. They would hold one kid with bent knees and an oar without taking on water. We would tie a rope through the hole in the bow and do a raft start behind a 13 whaler. The little boat would fly off the raft. The floor would buckle, and it would bounce like crazy until it threw you out like a rodeo ride. Talk about a good time! C n C I remember well the "Jaws" moments……waiting for that disc to come knifing back up from the deep….and hoping it didn't make direct contact with you as it broke the surface! Like anyone could produce a product like that today. Found a picture of one in the process of being restored. Nothing more than a plywood circle, they probably got 2 of them from an 8' sheet or maybe 3 from a 10' sheet. Last edited by mowtorman; 05-05-2014 at 07:20 AM. Reason: picture |

My disc was home made, painted yellow, and had a happy face painted on it like this.

When I was young we stood on a wooden surfboard as our boat pulled us. It was not the easiest piece of equipment to maneuver.

Laconia celebrates waterski history
This is the 60th anniversary of Dick Binette's record waterski jump at Lake Opechee. To acknowledge his achievement and celebrate the rich local watersports history the Laconia HIstorical Society will have an exhibit at the Laconia library of relevant artifacts, photos, vintage skis, etc. opening Tuesday Aug. 5th. At 7 that evening there will be a roundtable discussion of events such as the world and national waterski championships held in Laconia with panel members present with personal knowledge of the period. This will be the perfect lead in to the Waterski Boat Classic on Sunday Aug. 10th from 10 to 4 on Lake Opechee. The library presentation is free as are the boat rides provided by Winnisquam Marine on Sunday. Come listen and share your stories, and don't forget to bring your boat down to Opechee on Sunday so we can see what it can do. Special thanks to Brenda Kean at the Historical Society for her hard work on this event.
