Default GPS Unit for both Boating and Snowmobiling

Looking for some information on a GPS unit that may fill a duel roll for both Boating (Lake Winni) and Snowmobiling (NH). Not too overly expensive?

Thanks,

If you want to go with a hand-held GPS unit I recommend the Garmin eTrex line. I have an eTrex Vista HCx that I have used all over the world including boating on Winni and snowmobiling in the arctic. It cost about $200 but there are cheaper units that have less features or are black and white instead of color.

The maps supplied with the units are pretty basic but you can download and install very detailed maps.

I agree with Bear Islander. I also have and eTrex Vista HCX and have traveled the world with it. I have road and topographical mapsets.

I use a Garmin 60csx for boating and hunting, hiking, geocaching, roadtrips, etc. It's been around a few years but I consider it the "gold standard" of handheld units, especially for its accuracy. Haven't checked prices on eBay or Amazon lately but my guess is you could get one for around $200.

Check out this site for tips on using it:

You can also download a navigational depth map of Lake Winni for $10 here:

I have used this map and it is pretty decent.

Default I use a Garmin for both

I use a Garmin Nuvi 550 with the Bizer map for boating and then transfer it to my snowmobile and use it with a snowmobile map made by Backwoodsgpstrails.com The Bizer map is really good. The Backwoods map has the major routes but not all of the club trails. If a club sends them a gps track of their trails then they will add it to their map.

I have to agree with Fishbio. I have a Garmin 60csx and I really like it. I bought the SD card from Bizer for Lake Winni a couple months ago and it is fantastic. I also use mine when riding my ATV. I like to go back and view my track on Google Earth after a day of boating or riding, its pretty cool.
