Default Flying Squirrels

Last weekend I continued to see this rodent late at night on our upper deck where we keep a squirrel proof bird feeder. The rodent was the size of a chipmunk, but gray with big bulging eyes. Suddenly it jumped off my deck and smoothly glided to the ground. It was quite a sight. i am wondering if many people in the area have seen them? Their name is a misconception because they don't really fly, but glide. YouTube has some good videos on these squirrels gliding to the ground.

Default Flying red squirrels

These little rascals will chew through Tungsten steel. They are cute, until they chew their way into your attic. We didn't know we had infestation until one evening, our two Siamese cats were on the stairway, staring at the wall. Then they would race up to the landind and stop, staring at the wall... we knew something was up. Figured it was bats. Nope, flying red squirrels. I heartily suggest you stay alert - they'll be looking for nesting sites pretty soon!

Good advice. We had them in our rafters this year. Very destructive. Get rid of them any way you can.

I didn't think flying squirrels were red. i know red squirrels jump from tree to tree, but I don't think they glide like the true flying squirrel that is grey in color.

Default Flying Squirrels

According to NH Fish&Game, NH has several types of squirrels. They are:
Grey squirrel
Northern flying squirrel
Red squirrel
Southern flying squirrel

I am certain ours were reddish coated-they were not grey, they're not as big as grey squirrels either.

Default Flying Squirrel

I had a flying squirrel in my house. My three brave cats scrambled out of the living room as soon as they saw it.

I figured I would put on some leather gloves, catch the critter and let him go outside. I quickly learned that their sharp little teeth penetrate leather gloves and fingers with ease. After it let go of my finger it glided off of my hand into a nearby tree.
