Default Ice Cold Electronics

Every year when closing the camp I struggle with having to bring home all of the electronics for fear that the ice cold temps that the inside of the house gets will hurt them. What do other seasonal folks do? Do you leave your TV, stereos, etc. in the cold or bring them home to winter in the basement?

On a similar topic, how about the fridge. I usually turn it off. This year we had to buy a new one so now I'm wondering if I should just leave it running. I have to pay a minimum electrical charge anyways so it won't cost me anymore than if I shut it off for the winter.

Default For the winter

Turn off the fridge, leave the TVs, radios, etc. They all survive just fine. I believe refrigerators should not be left on in very very cold weather.

IG is correct. Refrigerators stop working when they become too cold. Unplug, clean it and leave it open. The other stuff should be fine too.

Default Critters

If you are worried about critters getting into your refrigerator, you can keep the door closed and put an open can of coffee in it. Keeps the musty smell out. Better to keep it open though, just take the crisper / meat drawers out, and the critters will look for a better hiding place. Have a good winter.

Default Liquid Crystal Displays

The liquid crystal displays in electronic devices may be damaged if a hard freeze occurs. Bring those items that have LCDs home.

Exclamation Main Power

Years ago a lighting struck a power pole. Since my Dad did not break the main power switch at the circuit breaker, everything was fried. Since then we turn off the camp with the main circuit breaker. We had no problems since. My grandfather advised us to dump our coffee grounds along the foundation of the camp. There were no sign of mice or ants in the years since we did that.
