It's ok...I can just try harder next spring! I will say that I usually beat the Mount in by a month, so maybe that event should signal the start of ... something!

Some interesting MS Mount Washington items:
$42 or 45-dollars: one ticket now in 2022 on the Mount's 2.5-hour scenic narrated cruise around Lake Winnipesaukee, same price as a gasoline fill-up for a compact car like a Honda Fit. The old wa-wa-wa-wa sound of its two diesels coming from the exhaust stack changed to a bzzzzzzz sound in 2010 with installation of two new Caterpillar diesel engines which replaced two diesels installed after the war in 1946. A federal car allowance rebate system or 'Cash for Clunkers' under the Obama administration funded these new engines with a $700,000 federal grant "intended to provide economic incentives to purchase a new, more fuel efficient vehicle when trading in a less fuel efficient vehicle." Just last month in April, 2022, its two bronze propellers were replaced with two new bronze propellers which will propel it around the big lake at something like 19.5 mph while it bzzzzzzz's along with its two, relatively new, diesel efficient engines ..... powered up by the President Obama administration.

The new engines are more efficient both in fuel consumption and in whatever emissions they discharge into the air. Much quieter, too. I'd guess the new engines require a lot less maintenance and don't have to be rebuilt so often. The new engines have transmissions, so you can shift gears without having to stop and restart the engines when docking.
I do miss the rumble of the old engines--we could hear the Mount coming from behind the island long before we could see her. |

As a kid I recall the Mount having more passengers and more cruises than in the past five or ten years, and the lakeside tourism seemed busier as well; the Weirs was hopping a lot more back in the day.
The numerous cabin rentals / cabin colonies I saw in my youth seem to have faded away. Makes me wonder "Why?" My guess: 1) The availability of air conditioning makes it less imperative to head to the lake for relief from summer heat; 2) Wealthy people snap up lakeside properties to build summer homes as opposed to rentals; and 3) Internet gaming replaces going fishing or for a swim for kids. Whatever, things have changed.

They’ve made some more changes on the Mount this year. All the orange “My. Washington House of Pizza” tables and booths are gone. They’ve added a bunch of big barrels converted to high top tables. Very nautical. They did this not just on the upper deck but on the mid-level deck on the bow where the rows of forward-facing seats were. Also on the third deck on the area behind the bridge they’ve added wooden rails and stools so that you can eat and drink sitting down while watching the scenery going by. Take a ride, you’ll enjoy the upgrades.
