Trying to picture where Pops is and it just isn't clicking as I'm not very familiar with that side of the lake. If I'm pulling out of the Wal Mart beside the Laconia airport do I take a left and just keep going? Sorry for the terrible example but like I said I'm just not sure.

Just a short distance after that left out of Gilford Walmart the road becomes Rt 11 east toward Alton. Pops is about 1/4 mile before the southern tip of Alton Bay. As jrc noted it is on the right coming down from Gilford.

Just across the street from Pops is an old train station right on the edge of the sidewalk. Still has the mechanical flag signal poking out into the street. If you go too far, you will see a big parking lot on your left with a bandstand in the water and another bandstand on the land. You can see the Grey building for Pops from that parking lot. Often times Pop has his pickup sitting there with a plywood ice cream cone.

We love Pops and go often.

At $23.95 for a Clam plate, I hope you enjoy it. That is quite expensive to us working class people. The wife and I drove through Alton and decided to stop for some clams, drove in and saw the prices and drove out. We'll stick to BayHaven in Cornish Maine if we want excellent seafood at a excellent price.

I ordered the baby shrimp plate to go which came to just about $15.00 with the tax, but you have to realize that shrimp plate could easily feed 3 people. I was so astonished that I actually counted them. 49 shrimp! plus enough cole slaw to fill a cereal bowl and enough fries to feed 3. I had two meals on that one plate + had some fries and cole slaw left for a 3rd. If you split a $15 plate between 2 people I don't think that's too much $. Knowing what I do, if you had ordered 1 clam plate, you and the missus would have had more than enough to eat and probably taken some home. Try it the next time you're in Alton. The biggest mistake newbies make is ordering too much.

Pop's is a bargain. I think other forum members will agree that 1 clam plate at Pop's will easily feed 2 people. As a comparason, we went to the new Weathervane at the Weirs the other day....Scallop BASKET was 19.95. Came with fries and nothing else. Scallops were very good, so no complaints about that. Lunch for my wife and I and our 4 yr old grandson was $57 including tip. We've spent much less at Pop's and brought enough home for a whole meal the next day.
Seriously, Topwater, try it, I think you'll like it...excellent quality all around.

RLW, a "little close to the ground" nope..i don't get your drift.

Yes, about 15 miles from Walmart, straight down Route 11.

The food is good, the portions are huge and the prices match. I aways order too much, mainly because there usually only two of us and we like different things. Most times we order one meal and one side order, it's still too much.

BTW I'm sure you know that Sawyer's is a lot closer and just as good. Their portions are smaller, but still quite large, so you throw away less.

We still go to Pop's because we can get there by boat. Once you spend $50 on gas to get there, the food seems cheap. But gas and food are worth every penny to make that wonderful ride.

It's a fish shack. Fried seafood is supposed to by eaten outside, on paper plates, with some sand blown on it, while looking at the water. (the lake will have to substitute for the ocean)

If you want tablecloths go across the street to Shibleys. Funny thing is that it will cost about the same.

We went tonight and ran into Sunset Bob & Sunset Ann. We had the small clam strip and small onion ring. Bottle of root beer and bottle of water. 14 bucks. We were full. I wish the camera had 3d for this picture.

In September 2009, RLW pointed everyone to an earlier thread (July 2009)where a discussion took place on Pop's cleanliness. In particular, a problem with spiders.

But I was real close to the ground down there tonight...Clam Plate and medium onion rings (shoulda done small). Wife and I split the meal right down the middle, and we were both full. Still have some OR's that I will reheat for a snack later.
