I tried posting the picture on the composite decking thread but it wouldn't post. I think I'm going to do my deck over at the lake with this same railing. I've built decks in both wood and plastic and I just prefer wood. Sorry for starting a new thread.

I stained the frame black until I have a chance to finish off the bottom in pressure treated lattis. I'm also waiting for black solar post caps that I ordered.

That looks really nice. Black stain looks great, never would have thought to do something like that but wow that really pops.

Nice job!

What are the balusters made from and how were they attached?

Have you any pics of the deck surface and baluster detail?

I will be helping my son rebuild his deck next month so your picture is inspirational.

I did the black stain so when I cover it with the pressure treated lattis the frame won't show through. Plus the frame was 20 years old and nice and dry. Pressure treated wood needs at least 3 months to dry out before staining.

The ballasts are aluminum and they come with plastic connectors on top and bottom. I actually did a stair railing inside my house with them also. You can also buy the railings pre-made. The cost is a little higher but it saves a lot of time.
If I had to do it again I think I would buy the pre-made railings. The pressure treated lumber that I used was very wet and will shrink up and leave gaps.
That whole deck redo, materials only, cost me under $1000 because I only replaced some of the bad Mahogany deck boards. If I had done the deck over in Azek it would have cost at least $8000 for the materials. I would have had to replace all the decking and the deck is 12 x 24.

Go to decksdirect.com. They have all kinds of pictures and will help design and ordering deck material. They are located in Minneapolis. I have used them and I saved a lot of money.

So I got so many compliments on staining the deck frame black I reluctantly decided to do the same to the old weathered mahogany decking. What do you think, be kind?

Possibly but we won't be out there in bare feet. I would be more afraid of splinters in my feet. My biggest concern is how it will hold up to traffic.

Another reason I love the Azek. No splinters.

I plan on selling the house soon so cost was a factor.
I spent about $1000 to redo this deck. If I did it in Azek it would have been over $8000.

Given your plan to sell, it was the perfect solution. I like the dark stain.

I think it looks beautiful, and I’m not a fan of the color black! I would not have spent any more money either, if you’re planning on selling. Better get it on the market soon, before prices start tanking.

We have been staining a lot of things black lately. My kids think it's a morbid sign of the times.

When I bought my first house the deck was stained black.

It was very consistent in its shading.

I was impressed by the stain work the sellers had done.

Two year later it started to rot, everywhere.

It turns out that a deck made of kiln dried framing lumber is easier to stain than one made of pressure treated lumber!

First houses...everyone needs at least one.
