As you probably know, Friday November 26 is Black Friday, the biggest shopping day of the year or something like that. Do you know of any lakes region retail Black Friday buying deals on a Baja Outlaw or a Laser sailboat or a Honda snowthrower or something like that?

Here supposedly is one item that is listed at www.blackfridayads.com for Walmart. A $198 laptop: e-machine 15.6" Laptop w/ celeron 2GB, 250GB, DVD+R .....

All may know this. Or not.

Wallymart is open all night. I think they open 10:00 PM on Thanksgiving Day.
But unknown if the specials begin at 5:00 AM as the flyer states. In other words I'm not sure if one does have to wait until 5:00 AM to purchase the specials.

Wallymart does this as because of the incident in New York couple years ago. So Wallymart wishes to avoid the long lines at 5:00 AM.

And yes, some of the grocery store ones are open all night anyway.

I do my shopping in my pj's, with a cuppa coffee in hand and my corgi warming my feet.

With free shipping, discount coupons, and "door busters" online that means I don't have to brave the crowds. Many sales start tomorrow and I plan to take advantage of the sales. The kids don't need much (read: Legos and trains have taken over our home!) but we do need a new TV this year; we'll be lucky if our old one lives another week (it's over 10 years old), and so getting a bargain is important as money is tight.

I read Argie's Wife post and a new TV was mentioned.

Here are some tips for those bargain hunters for televisions on Friday or after.

Many of the price leaders (low price) are off brand televisions. Yes, there is some warranty and somewhere there is someone who can fix/repair.

Many of these off brands or price leader televisions lack features. One of the prominent features is the built in speakers. Many brands assume that the buyer will have some sort of home theater with external speakers. So this bargain televison may have cheap or tin-ee sounding speakers. And many of these bargain televisions will have speakers in the rear - meaning that the sound has to bounce off the back wall to hear. Television speakers are much smaller now. So unless you have external speakers - look for televisions that have speakers in front.

LCD. Plasma. Each has pros and cons. Some reflect inside/outside light on screen. Do check in store for light reflections. LED is an LCD just with different pixel type.

Do check the return policy of store - if you do get TV home and it is not what you think. Some stores now have a restocking fee.

Brands such as Emerson, Poloroid, Bell & Howell, Crosley, and more have all gone by the wayside - the names have been resurrected. Even names like GE - are licensed to 3rd party companies.

The bargain lowest price is not always the best deal.

We scored on a Mitsubishi TV thru Dell's site today. It's neither LED, LCD, or plasma - it's DLP. Unlike plasma, DLP can be repaired (lamp replaced) when it burns out; which isn't an option with plasma. The lamp is ventilated so it's supposed to have a longer life. We read reviews on several websites (Amazon, HSN, Tiger Direct) before pulling the trigger and found it had great reviews. It's not as slim and sexy as plasma but I like it that it's more durable. We have young children and I prefer something that's not going to shatter when a Nerf dart hits it... . The price was well within our budget and it's bigger than I'd planned on but Argie is thrilled beyond measure. (Ask me if he's still thrilled after we re-arrange the living room!)

I think it will serve us well...

Our current TV is 7 years old and is an old CRT... it's seen better days.

We never did a "black friday sale" before but we score this year. got up at 2am to beat the winter mix and thyat worked, but standing in-line for 3 hours was a drag but it was worth getting a 32" lcd for 198.00 Yeah! we finally caught up with the jone's for a second.

OK AW,have you recieved it and watched it yet?I need a review.My first hi-def was a dlp and I used it only for 1 year and it has sat in a room for 3 years since unused.Dlp's for the most part must be viewed pretty much directly,at least mine did or the picture faded quickly.It was much less bright as my current tv and no where near the clarity and detail.In fact,it was hard to tell the difference between regular and hi def channels.My friends suffers the same fate.I purchased a Panasonic 50 plasma and it absolutely blows away my dlp.That's why it's sitting in my basement.Wondering if that Mitsubishi is much better.

Sam - We're going to be on cable but we're actually cutting back our cable and plan on using AppleTV for ~70% of our viewing. Argie is a news freak, so I can't ditch cable totally... I want more control over the content we watch - I'm tired of paying $$$ for commercials, bad content, and lots of re-runs. We (the kids and I - not Argie) are into gaming - love the Wii - and one night a week is 'Wii Night'. In other words, I'm justifying the purchase by making cuts elsewhere and taking better control of what we watch, as the kids are reaching an age where they're more into movies and less into 'kiddie shows'.

As for reviews, there's extensive reviews of the model we've purchased online:

CNet

...and I'll post again when it's all set up, etc.

There's a hi-def Sony 30" tv deal from Craigslist-Waterville Valley NH: 148-lbs, 3 1/2 yr old, $1200 cost new, sell for $130 plus it has excellent photos and lengthy description in the ad! Better get there fast before I go to buy it myself!

I have a Roku (similar to AppleTV...but better

) and it's been great. Netflix, HuluPlus, and Amazon streamed video, plus a bunch of other channel applications that access various podcasts and news summaries (NPR, CNN, independent, fringe, etc, etc) as well as some up-and-coming internet tv stations like KoldCast.

I've cut my cable back to just internet, and now pay $17/mo for Netflix + HuluPlus instead. That's less than even the most basic cable package from TW, and much MUCH less than what I was paying before. Plus...we're enjoying it more.

If you have Netflix...you can use the wii to stream Netflix videos. It used to require a wii program disc from Netflix, but now you can download the Netflix app (for free from the wii store) into the wii storage so you don't need the disc any more.

Our household is Mac-centric, so AppleTV is a natural fit for us. The beast arrived today, which was a little later than we'd anticipated but still great for free shipping (and considering it's size.)

Amazingly enough it only weighs like 65 lbs.

And since Argie had a really long day at work today, I put on my SuperMom cape and rearranged the living room myself. (I'm a human bulldozer anyhow - add coffee and I'm better than Rosie the Robot from The Jetsons...)

The TV is very easy to set up and reaching the input jacks in the back was simple. I'd read reviews where people complained the TV didn't have enough features but I found it to be just right for us - maybe our needs simple. Considering we're going from an old CRT (28", I think) to this... well... it seemed like too much TV at first.

Because the TV has a bulb I had let it warm up in the house - it sat for about 8 hours before I took it out of the box and wrap. I hooked up the cable, VCR, DVD system, and Wii with no problem. I still have room for another analog device, a USB line, and 3 HDMI ports. I turned it on and a simple, 4-step menu greeted me with simple choices (language, time zone, etc.) and then...

WOW

Great picture. Pretty good sound (I haven't tested that out yet - I'll play with that tomorrow..) and it's just easy to use. Everything just worked like it should. There's a slight delay when you turn it on to when you see a picture - like 6 seconds or so - but that's nothing, really. I have no complaints. Zero.

Argie got home at 9:30 and forgot to complain about the living room being changed... I guess I've done good.

So, AW, what's the final verdict?.....after a few days under your belt just wanted to see if you are happy with the picture....also, on some sets the picture fades a little unless you look at it straight on.......LCDs are like that but plasma is good from any angle.........appreciate a review cause we know you're pretty savvy with electronics. :-)

It's great...honest. I watched Curious George on 11-2 (HD) today with the Arglets - no fading or any of that...My office is over 50' from the screen and I am at about a 20 degree angle from the TV screen but the picture is still bright/vivid and the definition is excellent. (Our home is open concept - living/kitchen/dining are one large room; my office used to be the dining area.) Remember - this isn't LCD. It's something totally different - DLP.

The one "ug!" moment with the thing: waiting for it to warm up and for the picture to show up on the screen - it takes a little bit - just long enough for you to say, "Gee, did I really hit the power button? Really?"

I got the E370VL from EBay for $300 including shipping. This LCD is as close to plasma as you can get. Set up was awesome. The QAM tuner eliminates the Metrocast HD box. The speakers are marginal, but when hooked up to a theater system. Blowout!

The SRS Tru surround feature softens the commercial sounds. There is a sensor that measures the light in the room and adjust the picture. I love this feature as well.

Can't think of a better set for the price.

I am now looking for a reasonably priced blu-ray that is wifi capable and 1080p ready.

SIKSUKR Senior Member Join Date: Apr 2004 Posts: 5,075 Thanks: 215 Thanked 903 Times in 509 Posts	OK AW,have you recieved it and watched it yet?I need a review.My first hi-def was a dlp and I used it only for 1 year and it has sat in a room for 3 years since unused.Dlp's for the most part must be viewed pretty much directly,at least mine did or the picture faded quickly.It was much less bright as my current tv and no where near the clarity and detail.In fact,it was hard to tell the difference between regular and hi def channels.My friends suffers the same fate.I purchased a Panasonic 50 plasma and it absolutely blows away my dlp.That's why it's sitting in my basement.Wondering if that Mitsubishi is much better. __________________ SIKSUKR

Argie is a news freak, so I can't ditch cable totally... I want more control over the content we watch - I'm tired of paying $$$ for commercials, bad content, and lots of re-runs. We (the kids and I - not Argie) are into gaming - love the Wii - and one night a week is 'Wii Night'. In other words, I'm justifying the purchase by making cuts elsewhere and taking better control of what we watch, as the kids are reaching an age where they're more into movies and less into 'kiddie shows'. As for reviews, there's extensive reviews of the model we've purchased online: Amazon Tiger Direct/CompUSA CNet ...and I'll post again when it's all set up, etc.

There's some pretty overwhelming stuff out there if you're not on your toes. I'll probably stay with cable....had pretty good luck so far.

Amazingly enough it only weighs like 65 lbs. And since Argie had a really long day at work today, I put on my SuperMom cape and rearranged the living room myself. (I'm a human bulldozer anyhow - add coffee and I'm better than Rosie the Robot from The Jetsons...) The TV is very easy to set up and reaching the input jacks in the back was simple. I'd read reviews where people complained the TV didn't have enough features but I found it to be just right for us - maybe our needs simple. Considering we're going from an old CRT (28", I think) to this... well... it seemed like too much TV at first. Because the TV has a bulb I had let it warm up in the house - it sat for about 8 hours before I took it out of the box and wrap. I hooked up the cable, VCR, DVD system, and Wii with no problem. I still have room for another analog device, a USB line, and 3 HDMI ports. I turned it on and a simple, 4-step menu greeted me with simple choices (language, time zone, etc.) and then... WOW Great picture. Pretty good sound (I haven't tested that out yet - I'll play with that tomorrow..) and it's just easy to use. Everything just worked like it should. There's a slight delay when you turn it on to when you see a picture - like 6 seconds or so - but that's nothing, really. I have no complaints. Zero. Argie got home at 9:30 and forgot to complain about the living room being changed... I guess I've done good.

This LCD is as close to plasma as you can get. Set up was awesome. The QAM tuner eliminates the Metrocast HD box. The speakers are marginal, but when hooked up to a theater system. Blowout! The SRS Tru surround feature softens the commercial sounds. There is a sensor that measures the light in the room and adjust the picture. I love this feature as well. Can't think of a better set for the price. I am now looking for a reasonably priced blu-ray that is wifi capable and 1080p ready. __________________ Someday may never be an actual day.
