Default Ice-Out - rules change needed

I think we need to change the rules this year.

All extended forecasts show a very small, very brief period, barely above freezing this weekend. Then we plunge into 10-15 degrees below normal once again. I am SO tired of this bitter cold!

Time to change this years rules. Allow guesses through March 31st, and accept guesses for the month of June

Jet, you need to be re-indoctrinated! It's "climate change" now.

Default May Ice Out

I just looked at the extended forecast and its saying 10 days from now that temperatures will still be in the single digits at night!! That means that the lake will still be making ice!!

I don't see ice out occurring before early May...

Of course and it's our fault We just bought a camp and have to install a new septic system so it's going to be a long time until "warm-up" and then end of mud season so we can bring equipment in

It's my welcome back to the Lakes Region

We might have ice-out this year; but it will likely be a very, very cold lake all year long. Sweaters in July.

I'm a believer that Mother Nature always averages things out. So the good news is that we are going to have a great, HOT, Spring or Summer since the last few months have been so *()(*&^T cold!

I agree with you. Things do usually average out. Unless it stays really cold through April things could change in a hurry.

Default rules change

I agree that there should have been a rules change (too late now!). There should be a way to change the last voting date year to year, according to the ice conditions. Because of the harsh winter, I didn't even think about ice-out until recently. My guess would be 2 weeks later than last years', meaning May 1. The Great Lakes are very close to record-breaking ice coverage (91%), and could easily exceed the record (91.3%) in the next day or so.

OK, maybe we can get SteveA to Photoshop this image: A view from just south of Alton Bay, looking north. The tops of Mt.Major, Mt.Shaw, and maybe the tip of Rattlesnake Island show through the new Winnipesaukee Glacier hundreds of feet tall. Icebergs calve off the face onto what used to be Downing's Boat Landing. Trees in full autumn color in the foreground.

Just to be clear, my post was in jest. I really don't believe the rules should change from year to year. Guesstimating in a year like this one is half the fun.

Also, FYI, last year we had a record early ice-out in March.

Did that piece of open water off Welch that was hanging on (the Geothermal vent theory) ever freeze over ?

Default New thought for 2014...

Combine ice-out and ice-in....could be the same day .

This could be one of those years when we remember summer as July 11th at 3:45 PM. Before that time was winter into spring, and after that time is fall into winter.

No, you must be thinking of 2012. Last years' was April 17.
I figured it was posted in fun, but the idea still seemed to have merit, since ice-outs can vary 3-4 weeks one year to next. Of course, how to do it would be the problem.

Default Boat launch date

I just sent in my boat launch request with my marina for the spring. I put down my usual first Saturday in May (May 3rd). I have serious concerns that I will not make it.

I sent mine in last month for May 1. The marina may be open, and I may be able to get out between Sleeper's and West Alton. May not be able to cruise the whole lake. That's ok.. any part of the lake is good.

I have May 1st as well. Never been an ice-out on May 1st, so it is overdue. No science at all behind my guess, other than it will be a rather late ice-out.

Dock contracts are start on May 1, so May 1 sounded good to me. Plus, I don't really want to be the only boat out on the water, especially during the week.

If we don't have ice out by midnight on April 30, I suggest everybody turn on their dock bubblers at the same time...

I'm predicting that the person who chose the latest date, May 9 that I can see, will be the winner this year.

Wink Important update!!

I believe ice out will be held up by an ironic occurance. A giant piece of ice will remain off Welch Island right where the open area last froze. Apparently this area has a one month delay in temperature response. Sorry for the bad news.

It sounds like it is going to be a cool spring followed by a hot summer by what I've seen in any of the long-range predictions. If nothing else it'll give everyone a bit more time to get their boats cleaned up and in tip-top shape before ice-out. I spent an hour moving snow around yesterday so I can pull mine out of the carport and start digging into it.

Saw a robin today but they are here all year now so that first robin sighting has lost it's punch.

The animals know what's going on while lower intelligent humans argue about it.

Rules change?!?!?! Surely you're kidding.

So....if it's unusually warm next winter, we'll be able to end the guessing earlier?!?!

If you couldn't see that this was a remarkable winter during February, you either weren't paying attention, or were in Florida!

Just my $.02.
