...it's fishing derby time!
Well, if it's the middle of May, and you look out the window to see all sorts of Starcraft Islanders padding about at 1.5mph, then it must be a Salmon derby? Yes, that is correct.
More boats out there, right now, than I've seen all springtime, so far. Large sport fisherman to smaller 16'ers rigged for Salmon trollng, very slowly glid'n along across the gentle waters. Yesterday's weather was about as wicked wavy as it ever gets around here, so today's weather is pretty much perfect for a fishing derby. There's like about ten trollers out there right now, padding about, and not even a single boat, anywhere, moving faster than 1.5mph. Now that is unusual. There's no webcam in this area of the lake, so's you'll just have to take my word on this.

I can't wait to get back to the lake to watch all the people fishing! Winni Derby is in it's 28th year! What a good run. |

One of my usual running routes is along Scenic Drive, Ellacoya and Belknap Pt. This morning around 7:30, there were lots of boats out and about. And, you are right, no engine roar or heavy wakes. A very nice, quiet scene.

As I was driving north on 11 from West Alton this morning I had a great view of all the boats out on the lake this fine morning. It was great to see them out there enjoying their big weekend on the lake.
Then as I approached Ames Farm the view was empty fields. In past years on derby weekend there would have been a large number of pick-up trucks with small boat trailers attached. There was one pick-up with trailer/fishing boat parked in the drive next to the inn. The fisherman was out of the truck talking to someone near the inn with arms out low, palms forward in that classic "you have got to be kidding me" stance. Apparent disbelief in finding out that he could not launch his boat there. |

We took a boat ride today and there were quite a few fishing boats in the broads. The water was so calm and it was very warm. What a great day!

We finally made it out this evening for our first cruise of the season (yay!!). I was very surprised to see how many boats were out! It finally dawned on me that it must be derby weekend as nearly all appeared to be fishing.
