Default CT Residents maybe escaping to the Region

NH should be marketing on billboards in CT to attract new investors/taxpayers to the quality of all things NH and the Lakes Region have to offer. Perhaps boost a slow real estate market, new businesses and investments. Let's not have the headlines currently in CT newspapers ever be seen in this State. NH has a golden opportunity to capture fleeing victims and the money they bring with them. A major insurance co. CEO claimed yesterday before the 1.5 Billion proposed increases released today, that CT is the most expensive state to hire an employee in, or equal to NY City. I'm packing now!

Sen. Daily: 'We knew it would be ugly. We know we're in bad shape. You have to go where the money is'...
Healy: 'This is a disaster for the Middle Class, small business owners, investors and a pay day for the government'...
Malloy: 'I am sure that many of the cuts we will make on the human services side will be unpopular'...

Good points.....but the problem with actively bringing new residents to NH is that many of these new residents bring the "politics" of where they came from to NH. It's my opinion that Massachusetts residents, by & large, understand the low tax history of NH & respect it but as more residents from other states & other parts of the country come up here thay don't understand the "NH Advantage".

NH is just another place to live for many of these people.....hence you get the "troubles" of the past 4 years until this past November when the people threw the NHDP out. Someday; someone is going to figure out why people will leave high tax states & move to places like NH.....and then ruin them

I agree with you. Don't remake NH any more than it already has been.

My parents live in CT and I grew up there.
Actually when we were researching places to move to out of New Jersey we looked at CT very seriously, BUT we love our lakes, mountains and shore and get all that and more in NH.

I've heard a lot of complaining about transplants on the NH city-data forum. Especially in regard to wanting services that raise taxes. I'm not sure why a lot of the lakes region has kept taxes low, but that is one of the top ten reasons why we are moving there. When we get there I will fight to keep those property taxes low.

All pretty low tax towns if you ask me.
Hey, I live on the Jersey shore now, so a LOT of NH property taxes seem low to me. I'm sure those CT folks may be thinking the same.

CateP,

Just out of curiosity, what is your number one reason for moving to NH and your number one reason for leaving NJ?

It's the combination of the high valuation and abundance of lake front property that keep tax rates low in these towns. If you live off the lake (like me) it's great. If you live on the lake...OUCH!

Number one reason for moving to the lakes region (versus any part of New Hampshire) is quality of life. Happiness of being near lakes, mountains and other beautiful outdoors.

Number on reason for leaving New Jersey is stress!!!!

I couldn't agree more! If you come here to change NH then don't come, stay put and make your changes there.

I think change happens whether we like it or not. Heck, look at the weather. Look at the seasons. Look at your reflection in the mirror.

Sometimes changes can be a positive thing. Sometimes change can be too much, too little, too late. Sometimes change can even wreck a good thing.

Go to any town meeting and they will talking about change.

So whether you're opposed to coins jingling in your pocket (loose change) or new clothes (wardrobe change) or hot humid summers (climate change), change is going to happen.

In my mind, the thing is to stand up for what you believe is good and true and what works for all.

Think about traffic lights. If they didn't change, we'd all be stuck in the same spot!

Well unless you get the employment rate up around here I certainly don't want any out-of-staters at all. Just what we need more people coming up and vying for what little jobs that there are here. So I say get the business to move here, and not do to them like we did to Cabellas, and get some more people employed that already live here.
The folks from CT that is...Not you Cate!

In the early 90s NH did a good job of capturing business and making them feel welcome up here. I don't know if the state is still as active as they used to be in bringing business into the state. I suspect with our business taxes going up over the years NH is not seen as welcome as it once was.

I'm bringing my job with me so I'm all set. I'm just going to spend money in the local economy and buy local as much as possible. My partner on the other hand IS looking in the restaurant/hospitality sector.

I only wish my Hollis NH tax rate was as low as my Alton tax rate.

Default a willing escapee

I'd be happy to escape to N.H. from Ct. and would be there already except my husband doesn't share the same passion for the place that I do. I am retired, so I wouldn't be taking anybody's job and I would happily pay my taxes and support the locally owned businesses. But I'll have to make do with frequent trips, intermittent "escapes".
And about "change", it's one of the few things in life that you can depend on. Nothing stays the same.

CT resident for the past 16 years. Bougt home in NH for the wonderful people and natural beauty. We have loved the Lakes for nearly 2 decades.

We will retire in NH and plan to be true to the NH values of self reliance and freedom. CT lost those values years ago.
