Default Prohibition + Smuggling

Hi All,
On the Forum last year someone asked me to post some information I had found while I was researching Prohibition (about 1920-1932) and alcohol smuggling operations in New England and specifically the Lakes Region.

At that time I wasn't ready to do it, but my search for any reference to what I was looking for in Winni failed. I nonetheless printed Prohibition-related articles from the Laconia Democrat stored on microfilm, because I found them so interesting. Gun battles-car chases-raids-jail time-the whole deal, for real. I read all 624+ copies of the Democrat on microfilm spanning 1920-1932. I attach some of them for your reading pleasure-I hope they look alright.

Understand what you see here online was scanned onto microfilm first for the Library, then printed on to paper by me after reading it, then scanned by me into pdf, then posted here. Tough to maintain clarity of text but I would suggest you hit the "+" button in pdf and simply enlarge the image for easier reading.

I will post side-scan-sonar images or photos of other things I find as they come up that are worth posting.

Fascinating stuff!

Reading some of the other articles surrounding these, it's interesting to see that our fine State has been fighting an income tax since 1921! And we're still winning that battle!

Thanks for posting!!!!!

Cool stuff.

I wonder if that lengendary load of whiskey will ever be found...

Meanwhile, you should share some of your incredible archaeological finds (bottles, etc.) over in the "Treasure Hunting" thread in the General section. You and Winni Divers are probably the two greatest treasure hunters blowing bubbles in the Lake today!
