Default Mailboat Mail: What Happens in the Winter?

What happens to a piece of mail that's sent in the winter to an island address that in the summer would be delivered by the mailboat? I've been told second hand that the Laconia post office will not accept a forwarding request for mail sent to an island address that from June to September would be delivered by the Sophie C. If this is true, what happens to a letter sent to an island address that lands in the Laconia post office in the middle of winter? Does the post office hold on to it until the mailboat starts making runs again in June? Does it get put in a dead letter bin to never see the light of day again? Returned to the sender?
